As early as 2 years ago, many people in #Germany and #Europe felt that #BigTech ’s internet platforms did not live up to the claim of being #socialmedia. Many were appalled by the #hatespeech, #incitement, #cyberbullying, and #disinformation being spread there.
Our action alliance first reached out to #universities to propose withdrawing from #X and adopting #Mastodon. We believe the #Fediverse platforms are much better suited for #SciComm or, more broadly, for substantive discourse aimed at protecting and preserving our #democracy. Other initiatives have since emerged, such as #ByeByeElon, #HelloQuitX, #LeaveX, and #SaveSocial.
We’ve already seen some initial success: around 150 #academic institutions in Germany are active on Mastodon and have +157k followers there

This will probably come as no surprise to anyone, but I've been back to X because I wanted to get live updates on a certain war in the Middle East, and I now firmly believe that a large percentage of the people there are absolute idiots with an IQ level below room temperature.
If I see another "Grok is this true?" Or "Grok what does this mean?" I am going to throw the entire alphabet at everyone.
Ending online harms isn't a game of whack-a-mole.
The only way is to bust the business model that rewards harmful results.
Nothing changes until we break the spell that keeps us on platforms; the harvesting of our data to maximise engagement and fuel advertising.
We need to get off the regulatory treadmill and #BreakBigTech.

New article in Nature describes a field experiment on X which shows that assigning users to an algorithmic feed increases engagement and shifts opinions to align more with conservative viewpoints and demotes mainstream news. Sounds obvious but important in light of prior claims that algorithms don't cause attitudinal changes.

Excerpt from the abstract: Switching from a chronological to an algorithmic feed increased engagement and shifted political opinion towards more conservative positions, particularly regarding policy priorities, perceptions of criminal investigations into Donald Trump and views on the war in Ukraine. In contrast, switching from the algorithmic to the chronological feed had no comparable effects. Neither switching the algorithm on nor switching it off significantly affected affective polarization or self-reported partisanship. To investigate the mechanism, we analysed users’ feed content and behaviour. We found that the algorithm promotes conservative content and demotes posts by traditional media. Exposure to algorithmic content leads users to follow conservative political activist accounts, which they continue to follow even after switching off the algorithm, helping explain the asymmetry in effects. These results suggest that initial exposure to X’s algorithm has persistent effects on users’ current political attitudes and account-following behaviour, even in the absence of a detectable effect on partisanship.
My one suggestion for the @Mastodon team is to partner with hosting companies, & allow people to setup an instance on their own domain.
People could purchase the plans they prefer, & Mastodon could get a commission for referring people.
I think all official #Fediverse apps should do this!

Half a lifetime ago I bought a house. Turned out my next door neighbor was some kind of Greek Nazi. Every time I saw him, it was youse people this, youse people that. And other nonsense.
I sold the house, and took a $30k+ bath. It was costly, so don't tell me leaving X or Substack is too costly.
