Fruella, Dreadmere Mercenary: Bones 4 Dreadmere Figure

This past week I painted the Fruella, Dreadmere Mercenary, figure from the Bones 4 Dreadmere Expansion set.
I prepped the figure in the usual way, soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it.  I then glued the figure to a black-primed 1" fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue, and when dry, glued the washer to a tongue depressor with a couple drops of Elmer's glue.
I  began by painting her face with Reaper MSP "Tanned Skin".  I then panted her shirt with Folk Art "Butter Pecan", and her under skirt with Reaper MSP "Holly Wreath".  After that, I painted her outer skirt with Folk Art "Poppy Seed", and the bit of armor in the opening of her skirt with Americana "Terra Cotta".
Next, I painted her boots with Americana "Charcoal Grey", and her coat with Apple Barrel "Apple Black Green". After that, I painted her gloves with Americana "Fawn", and the fur on her collar and boot-tops with Americana "Asphaltum".
I then painted the axe handle with Americana "Light Cinnamon", andd the axe head with Americana "Zinc".  I followed up by painting the wrapping on he axe with Accent "Mustard Seed", and using some Reaper MSP HD "Umber Brown" to paint her belts, pouch, and scabbard.
I let everything dry for a while, and then I gave her face a coat with Citadel "Reikland Fleshshade" wash.  When it was dry, I gave the rest of a coat of Citadel "Agrax Earthsdahde" wash.  When all the washes were good and dry, I painted her hair with Ceramcoat "Black".    I then did her eyes, and then highlighted her face with Reaper MSP "Tanned Highlight", and Reaper MSP "Rosy Highlight".
Next, I did the highlights in her hair using Americana "Grey Sky" and then moved to her blouse, highlighting that with a mix of the base "Butter Pecan", and some Americana "Bleached Sand".  After that, I highlighted the armor piece hanging down between her skirt using Accent "Golden Oxide", and highlighted the underskirt using Crafter's Acrylic "Holiday Green".
I then highlighted the outer skirt using a mix of the base "Poppy Seed" and some Folk Art "Gray Green"; and then highlighted the coat with some of the base "Apple Black Green" mixed with some Folk Art "Hunter Green", and then the "Hunter Green" mixed with a little Apple Barrel "Apple Christmas Green".  After that, I did the fur trim on the coat and the boots with some Ceramcoat "Territorial Beige", and then a little of the lighter Americana "Khaki Tan". Next was the gauntlets, and I highlighted them with some of the base "Fawn" mixed with Americana "Buttermilk", then I highlighted her bag with some Americana "Sable Brown", and I did the axe handle with some of the "Fawn" mixed with the base "Light Cinnamon".
At this point I painted the axe head with some Folk Art Metallics "Gunmetal Grey", and then highlighted it with Ceramcoat "Metallic Silver".  I also used the "Metallic Silver" to paint the belt buckle. Lastly, I painted the entire base with "Americana "Mississippi Mud".
I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave it a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish.    Then, when  the varnish was dry, I used some white glue to flock the base.  Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's "Dullcote".

Another good tabletop mini.  Nothing fancy with this one.  Though what's in the bag?! :D

Bandit Leader: Bones 3 Figure

Well, I was able to squeeze in some painting time last week after all, (despite Fall-In being this past weekend) and I finally finished the figure I had been working on for the past 3 weeks: Bandit Leader, from the Bones 3 Stoneskull Expansion, Part 3.  This is the final figure I had left to do from this set.
The figure was a bit oddly sculpted I felt, being almost entirely two dimensional looking.  So I decided to do a little modification on him to help look less stilted.
Photo from Reaper's website

I prepped this figure in the usual way; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it.   I then cut both arms at the elbows and after slicing off a small angled section of each arm, re-glued them so they bent in more.  After that, I glued the figure to a black-primed 1" fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue, and then placed the figure in my painting grip.
I began by painting his armor with Ceramcoat "Black".  When dry, I drybrushed the armor with  Folk Art Metallics "Gunmetal Grey".  I then painted his skin with Americana "Shading Flesh".
Next, I painted his leggings with Americana "Neutral Grey", and his skirt with Accent "Real Umber".  I then painted his hood and sleeves with Folk Art "Barnyard Red", and his leather armor with Americana "Terra Cotta".  After that, I did his waist belt with Americana "Light Cinnamon", and boots and the shield strap with Americana "Raw Umber".
I then continued with the "Raw Umber, using it to paint all the straps and the pouch on his belt, as well as the grip of his sword.  After that, I painted the front of his shield with Folk Art "Deep Tomato Red",the back with Americana "Mississippi Mud", and the sword with Americana "Zinc".  Then, when the figure had a while to dry, I gave the entire thing a wash with  Citadel "Agrax Earthsahde" wash.
Unfortunately, I must have fouled my "Agrax Earthsahde" or something, because I found in many places (see the base of the hood for example) it dried white for some reason.
When the wash was dry, I painted the eyes (I hate doing eyes inside hoods!), and highlighted the face and hands with Crafter's Acrylic "Flesh".   I then highlighted the leggings with Crafter's Acrylic "Storm Cloud Grey", and his hood and sleeves with Crafter's Acrylic "Orange Spice".
Next, I highlighted the skirt with Nicole's "Brown", and then the leather armor with Accent "Golden Oxide".  I then highlighted the belt with Americana "Sable Brown", and the shoes, belts and straps with Folk Art "Teddy Bear Brown".  After that, I highlighted the face of the shield with Ceramcoat "Bright Red", and then painted the sword with the "Gunmetal Grey".  I then went around and highlighted all the metal with Ceramcoat "Metallic Silver".
Lastly, I painted the figure's integral base with Americana "Bittersweet Chocolate".
I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave it a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish.    Then, when  the varnish was dry, I used some white glue to flock the base.  Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".

Well, considering he took 3 weeks to complete, I'm glad to finally have him done!   There's nothing that great about him, but he will do just fine for the table top.

Bandit Enforcer: Bones 3 Figure

It was another busy project week for me so, knowing my time would be limited, I picked a relatively easy figure to work on: Bandit Enforcer, from the Bones 3 Stoneskull Expansion, Part 3.
I prepped this figure in the usual way; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it.   I then glued the figure to a black-primed 1" fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue, and then placed the figure in my painting grip.
I began by painting his armor with Ceramcoat "Black".  When dry, I drybrushed the armor with  Folk Art Metallics "Gunmetal Grey".  I then painted his skin with Americana "Shading Flesh".
I then painted his tunic with Apple Barrel "Apple Maple Syrup", and his boots with Americana "Light Cinnamon".  After that, I painted the turn down on his right boot, his belt, the sword grip, and his wrist strap on his left wrist, all with Americana "Bittersweet Chocolate".
Next, I painted his rear pouch with Americana "Mississippi Mud", and his sword, mug, and boot armor all with Americana Zinc.  I then painted his canteen(?) with Anita's "Burnt Sienna", and the cord and fringe around it with "Reaper MSP Bones "Cinnamon Red".  After that, I painted the armor on his left thigh with Americana "Terra Cotta".  I then painted his hair Crafter's Acrylic "Cinnamon Brown", and tried to decide what the lines were on the left side of his face.  I figured they might be a miscast ear and earrings? However, I thought they looked more like a scar with stitches and the remnant of a sliced off ear, so went with that.  I painted a line on the side with the "Cinnamon Red", and then painted the "stitches" with the "Chocolate Brown".
I then went back and painted over the "Zinc" with the "Gunmetal Grey".  After that, I  gave his face, arms, and hands a wash of Citadel "Reikland Fleshshade" wash.   When that wash was dry, I then gave a wash to he rest of him with Citadel "Agrax Earthshade" wash.  When the washes were dry, I painted his eyes, and then highlighted his face with a mix of the "Shading Flesh" and some Crafter's Acrylic "Flesh".  I then highlighted his hair using Americana "Sable Brown".
Next, I highlighted his tunic with Americana "Antique White", and then highlighted the leather armor on his left thigh with a mix of the "Apple Maple Syrup" and some Accent "Golden Oxide".   I then highlighted his boots, and the pouch around back with Americana "Khaki Tan", and highlighted his right boot top, belt, and wrist guard with Folk Art "Teddy Bear Brown". After that I highlighted the cord on the canteen with Crafter's Acrylic "Orange Spice", and the canteen itself with some of the "Orange Spice" mixed with the base "Burnt Sienna".  I wrapped up the highlighting by doing all the metal with some Ceramcoat Metallic Silver".
Lastly, I painted the figure's integral base with the "Bittersweet Chocolate".
I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave it a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish.    Then, when  the varnish was dry, I used some white glue to flock the base.  Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".

Well, not my greatest, but there he is.  You can tell he was a rush job, but certainly good enough for tabletop use. :)

Bandit Knocker: Bones 3 Figure

This past week, I picked a simple figure to work on; as I was still a bit limited in my ability to paint, as I continue to recover from arm surgery.  The figure I painted was the Bandit Knocker from Part III of the Stoneskull Expansion set from the Bones 3 Kickstarter.
I began by giving the entire figure a wash with Reaper MSP "Brown Liner".  When that was dry, I painted all his skin with Americana "Shading Flesh". Next, I painted his armor bits with Americana "Raw Umber", and his leggings with Folk Art Dapple Gray".
I then painted all his leather bits with Crafter's Acrylic "Cinnamon Brown", and then did his club with Americana "Mississippi Mud". Next, I did the patch on his right knee with Accent "Golden Harvest", and then his boot tops with Americana "Avocado".  After that, I painted the pouch around back, and the grip of the knife in his boot, with Black.
I let everything dry for a while,  and then I gave his skin a wash with some Citadel "Reikland Fleshshade" wash.  When that was dry, I gave the rest of his clothing, armor, and weapon, a wash with Citadel Agrax Earthshade"wash.   When these washes were dry, I painted his eyes, and then highlighted his skin with a mix of the base "Shading Flesh", and Crafter's Acrylic "Flesh". I also gave him some eyebrows with Reaper MSP "Turkey Brown".
I then painted his armor, by first splotching near the edges with Crafter's Edition "Spice Brown", and then some lesser splotching with Accent "Golden Oxide". After that I gave it a good drybrushing with  Folk Art Metallics "Gunmetal Grey".  After that, I highlighted the wood of the club with Crafter's Edition "Taupe".
I next highlighted all the leather parts with Americana "Sable Brown".  I then painted all the studs and buckles on all the leather with Reaper MSP "Scorched Metal", and then highlighted them with the "Gunmetal Grey".  I highlighted his leggings with a mix of the base "Dapple Grey", and some Americana "Dove Grey"; the patch was highlighted with Americana "Moon Yellow".  I then highlighted the tops of the boots with a mix of the base "Avocado", and some Crafter's Acrylic "Wild Green", and did the highlights on the back pouch with Americana "Zinc".
Lastly, I painted the figure's base with the "Raw Umber".
I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave him a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish.    Then, when  the varnish was dry, I used some white glue to flock the base.  Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".   When the Dullcote was dry, applied a little gloss varnish to the eye balls.

Well, not a great figure; but considering I was still recovering from my arm surgery, so only had limited use of my one arm (granted it was the one that I hold the figure with, not my brush hand,)  I'm pleased with how it turned out.

Bandit Bully: Bones 3 Figure

This past week I painted the Bandit Bully figure from Part III of the Stoneskull Expansion set.  Back when my box from the Bones 3 Kickstarter arrived, he was one of the first figures I used as conversion fodder to try out some of the weapons from new weapons sprues that came with the Core Set.  For this figure, I used the Hammer from the Armory of Death weapons set. He since has sat on my painting table waiting his turn.  I felt it was about time i got to him.

I forgot to take a photo of him in his original state, so here's the one from the Reaper Online Store.
I had prepped this figure in the usual way back before I did the conversions; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it.   I then had cut way his sword, and drilled out his hand. Next I  cut the hand open and superglued the hammer in place, closing the hand back up.   I now glued the figure to a black-primed 1" fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue, and then placed the figure in my painting grip.
I began by giving the entire figure a wash with Reaper MSP "Grey Liner".  When that was dry, I painted all his armor with "Black", and  when dry, I drybrushed it with reaper MSP "Aged Pewter".  I then did a lighter drybrush with Ceramcoat "Metallic Silver".  After that, I painted his skin with Reaper MSP "Olive Skin Shadow".
Next, I painted his tunic with Anita's "Burnt Sienna", and then did his boots with Americana "Bittersweet Chocolate".  I then painted the top of the folded down boot with Folk Art "teddy Bear Brown". After that, I painted his belt and straps with Reaper MSP "Turkey Brown", and the pouch on his back belt with Americana "Mississippi Mud".
I then painted the handle of his hammer with  Crafter's Acrylic "Cinnamon" Brown", the dangle on his hanging belt medallion with Accent "Golden Harvest", and the cord holding the medallion with Americana "Antique White".  After that, i painted the metal parts of his hammer with Americana "Zinc".     Then, when everything had a chance to dry, I gave his skin a wash with some Citadel "Reikland Fleshshade" wash.  When that was dry, I gave the rest of his clothing, armor, and weapon, a wash with Citadel Agrax Earthshade"wash.
When the wash was dry, I painted his eyes, and then highlighted his skin with Reaper MSP "Olive Skin", and Reaper MSP Olive Skin Highlight".  I painted his teeth with the "Antique White", and then highlighted his tunic with Crafter's Acrylic "Orange Spice".
Next, I highlighted his boots with Crafter's Edition "Spice Brown", and the folded over top with Ceramcoat Territorial Beige".  I then highlighted the belts and straps with Americana "Sable Brown", and used a little of this color to add some highlights to the hammer handle.  After that, I highlighted the fringe on the hanging medallion with Crafter's Acrylic "Daffodil Yellow", and the string holding hit with the base "Antique White".
I then painted the hammer with Folk Art Metallics "Gunmetal Grey".  Afterwards, I highlighted all the metal with Ceramcoat "Metallic Silver".  I also painted his earring with Ceramcoat "14K Gold".
Lastly, I painted the figure's base with the "Bittersweet Chocolate".
I let the figure dry overnight and the next day I gave him a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish.    Then, when  the varnish was dry, I used some white glue to flock the base.  Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".

When the Dullcote was dry, I tried an experiment, and applied a little gloss varnish to the eye balls.   I think it looks ok, and actually provided a little reflective dot in his pupil which I didn't have to paint. :)  I'm really happy with the figure, though I think his skin is a little darker than what I wanted for olive skin.  I think next time I will skip the Shadow layer of the skin triad, or skip the wash.  I think both together was a little too dark.
