Lizardman with Club & Shield: Bones 3 Figure

Sorry for being a day late, folks; but I was recovering from the Fall-In convention yesterday and getting my photos and blog reports from there sorted, and totally forgot about getting this posted.

This past week I started working on one of the Lizardmen with Club & Shield figures from the Bones 3 24 Bones Figure set as a test subject to establish a paint scheme for all 32 that I got from the Kickstarter. (Plus a few of the metal versions I've picked up along the way.)  So I  was looking for something that I could mass produce quickly and easily, and get done before I had to leave for Fall-In.
I prepped the figure in the usual way; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying it.   When it was thoroughly dry I gave it a base coat color with Rustoleum Camouflage "Deep Forest Green"
Then, when the base coat was dry, I glued the figure to a black-primed 1" fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue, and then glued the washer-mounted figure to a tongue depressor with a couple drops of the Elmer's glue.
I  began by drybrushing the whole figure, first with Americana "Avocado", and then with the lighter, Americana "Jade Green".  I then painted his shield and club with Americana "Raw Umber".
Next, I painted his belts, scabbard, and javelin holder with Citadel "Snakebite Leather", and then painted his loincloth, sword grip, and the straps on his shield with Reaper MSP "Turkey Brown". After that I painted the javelins with Americana "Sable Brown", and the skull on his belt, and the bone handle on his sword with Americana "Antique White".
I decided to also go ahead and paint his teeth with the Antique "White", as well as the little bone bracelet on his right arm.  I then painted his claws with Americana "Charcoal Grey", and then did the little bit of  armor on his loincloth with Ceramcoat "Bronze.  Next, I painted the tips of the javelin sticks with Reaper MSP "Ginger Cookie".
I let the figure dry for a while, and then gave all the areas I had just painted in non-green colors a wash with Citadel "Agrax Earthshade" wash.  When the wash was dry, I drybrushed the turtle shell with Americana "Mississippi Mud", and drybrushed the club with Nicole's "Brown".
Next, I painted some details on the turtle shell shield with Crafter's Acrylic "Bright Yellow", and then painted the obsidian shards in the club with Black.  I then went back and highlighted these shards with Citadel "The Fang".   I then highlighted the belts, scabbard, and quiver with Ceramcoat "Raw Sienna, and the skull, bone sword handle, and bone bracelet with Americana "Bleached Sand".  Next up were the teeth which I highlighted with Crafter's Acrylic "Light Antique White".  After that I painted the eyes with Accent "Golden Harvest",  and added Black slitted pupils.   I did highlights on the javelin's next, doing the shafts with Reaper MSP "Tanned Shadow", and the pointy parts of the sticks with Reaper MSP Ginger Cookie".  The loin cloth, sword grip and shield straps were the next parts I highlighted,  using Crafters Edition "Spice Brown".   Lastly, I went back and added some highlights to the bit of armor on the loincloth using the original "Bronze".
I let the figure dry overnight and the next morning I gave it a coat of Americana "DuraClear Matte" varnish. When that was dry, I flocked the base. Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".

I'm generally happy with how this one turned out.  It's got some rough edges, but for a figure that is going to be used in a mass of similarly painted brothers, I think it will look okay.

Lizardman Spearman & Warrior: Figures 251 & 252 of 266

I was finally able to finish up the Lizardman Spearman & Lizardman Warrior over the weekend.  This wraps up the Swamp Things set, and it joins the list of completed sets over on the right.
I prepped the figures in the usual way; soaking them in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish- soap added, then giving them a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying them.  I then glued both to  black primed 1" fender washers using Aleene's Tacky glue.  I then glued the washers to a tongue depressor with a couple drops of Elmer's glue each.
I began by painting their underbellies with Americana "Reindeer Moss".
I then painted the rest of their bodies with Aleene's "Deep Khaki".  After that, I painted the turtle shell shield with Accent "Mustard Seed", and then the spear shaft, and club with Folk Art "Barn Wood".
Next, I painted their loin cloths with Crafter's Acrylic "Orange Spice", and their belts, straps, and quivers with Americana "Terra Cotta".  I then painted the scabbards and the pouch with Apple Barrel 'Burnt Sienna", and then did the skull, bone part of the sword on the Warrior with Crafter's Edition "Taupe".  After that, I painted the wraps on the spear, and the grip on the sword with Folk Art "Deep Tomato Red", and then got the "Barn Wood" out again, and used it to paint the javelin shafts in their quivers.
I then painted their arm and wrist bands, as well as the shield strap with citadel "Snakebite Leather".  After that I painted their claws with Folk Art "Gray Green". I got out the "Taupe" again, and added bone bars to the wrist piece on the Warriors right wrist.  My next step was to use some Ceramcoat "Bronze" to paint the scale mail on the Warrior's loincloth, and the dagger handle fittings on the Spearman.   Then after everything had a while to dry, I gave both figures a complete coat of Citadel "Agrax Earthshade" using a wet brush.   When the wash was dry, I painted their eye sockets Black, and then painted their eyes with Americana "Buttermilk", I realized I hadn't painted their teeth, so while I had the "Buttermilk out, I used it to paint their teeth.  I then went back and aded Black pupils.
Next, I painted the spearpoint, the spikes on the club, and one of the javelin points Black to look like obsidian.      My intent had been to paint all the javelin points as obsidian, but upon closer inspection I realized they looked like they were meant to be nothing more than sharpened sticks. In fact, I think the spear itself might only be meant to be a sharpened stick, but I wanted it to be obsidian.  I then drybrushed their highlights on their skin with Aleene's "Dusty Khaki", and then highlighted their underbellies with the base "Reindeer Moss".  After that, I highlighted their loin cloths with Crafter's Acrylic "Pure Pumpkin", and then highlighted the wraps on the spear, and the sword grip with the "Orange Spice". I then mixed some of the "Snakebite Leather" together with some Apple Barrel "Apple Maple Syrup", and used that to highlight the straps, quivers, and armbands.  I also mixed some of the "Apple Maple Syrup"with the "Burnt Sienna" to highlight the pouches and scabbards.  Next, I highlighted the bone parts with first Americana "Bleached Sand", and then Crafter's Acrylic "Light Antique White".  I then highlighted the Black spearpoint, club spikes, and javelin tip with first Citadel "The Fang", and then White. I drybrushed the turtle shell with some of the "Apple Maple Syrup".  Lastly, I painted his integral bases with Ceramcoat "Walnut".
I let the figures dry overnight and the next day I gave them a coat of Ceramcoat "Matte Varnish". When dry, I flocked the bases. Another overnight dry, and I sprayed them with Testor's Dullcote".

I can't say as I enjoyed painting these as they just seemed too overly detailed for lizardmen figures.  I guess I'm more use to totally naked lizards with out all the extra accoutrements these guys are wearing. I'm not looking forward to the couple dozen of them I have coming in Bones 3.  Anyway, I'm generally happy with the way they turned out, and maybe now that I have a painting scheme all worked out, the new ones that are coming will seem easier to do.  Plus I can work on those in assembly line fashion.

Marsh Troll: Figure 248 of 266

This past week I started the Swamp Things set and painted the Marsh Troll figure.
I prepped the figure in the usual way; soaking it in a dish of water with a couple drops of dish-soap added, then giving it a light scrub with a soft toothbrush, and then rinsing and drying.  I then glued the troll to a 2" black-primed fender washer with Aleene's Tacky glue.  The 2" washer was big enough to just hand hold, so I didn't glue it to a tongue depressor.
I began by painting his belly and the underside of chin, legs and arms with Americana "Bleached Sand".  I then painted the rest of his skin with Nicole's "Brown", and the scales on his back, arms and legs with Apple Barrel "Apple Black Green".    Next, I painted his rear loin cloth fur with Americana "Asphaltum, and the front loin cloth with Americana "Zinc".  On the back one, I painted the part that was folded down using Ceramcoat "Territorial Beige".  I painted his pouch with Americana "Terra Cotta", and the shrunken head or skull (whatever it is) with Folk Art "Butter Pecan". The cord around his waist I painted with Folk Art "Gray Green".  I followed that with painting his club with Americana "Mississippi Mud".
I then used the "Gray Green" again to paint the cord on the club. After that I painted his wrist wraps with Folk Art Barn Wood", and then did his teeth with Americana "Buttermilk".  I then painted his claws with Apple Barrel "Rock Grey".
Next, I painted his front loin cloth to look like fish scales by using some  Folk Art Pearl "Aqua Moire".  I then let everything dry for a while and then gave the entire figure a wash with Citadel "Nuln Oil" wash using a wet brush.   When the wash was dry, I painted his eyes, and then highlighted his teeth with Crafter's Acrylic "Light Antique White".
Next, I highlighted his skin with Americana "Sable Brown", and then highlighted his underbelly with the base "Bleached Sand". I then drybrushed his scales with Duncan "Olive Green".   After that, I drybrushed his fur loincloth with Americana "Khaki Tan", and then used that color to highlight the edges of the underside flap that hangs over the top.  I then moved around to the front and highlighted the overhang flap on the top of the fish scales with Crafter's Acrylic "Storm Cloud Grey".  While doing that, I noticed that there was a bag tucked into his belt at the corner of the fish scale flap, so I took a moment and pointed hit with Accent "Golden Harvest" and then highlighted it with the "Butter Pecan".  I also highlighted the other pouch with the base "Terra Cotta, and the Skull/shrunken head with the "Khaki Tan".  The wrist wraps I highlighted with the base "Barn Wood", and his claws I highlighted with the base "Rock Grey".
I then moved to the club and carefully drybrushed the tips of the thorn spikes with Black.  Then as carefully as I could I tried to drybrush the base wood of the club with some of the "Barn Wood" color.  I then highlighted the cord wrapped around the club, as well as the cord at his waist with the base "Gray Green".   I finished up by drybrushing the fish scales with Folk Art "Silver Sterling",  then I painted his integral base with Ceramcoat "Walnut".
I let the figure dry over night and the next day I gave it a coat of Ceramcoat "Matte Varnish". When dry, I flocked the base then glued on a small stick and some grass tufts. Another overnight dry, and I sprayed it with Testor's Dullcote".

I'm happy with how this big fella came out.  He won't win any contests, as it was a busy week and I ended up cutting some corners; but for the most part I think he is a very serviceable tabletop figure.

Lizardman Warrior: Figure 74 of 265

This week I also had time to paint the Lizardman figure from the 30 New Bones set.  I began by soaking him overnight in some water with a little dish soap added, and then I gave the figure a light scrub with a soft toothbrush and rinsed it.  When dry, I sprayed it with Krylon Flat Black Camouflage with Fusion. I then glued it to a black-primed 1" fender washer with Aleene's tacky glue, and then glued this to a half a tongue depressor using two drops of Elmer's white glue.
To begin, I painted the front of the figure with Americana "Reindeer Moss Green"; and the scaly back of the figure, and top of the head, I painted with Americana "Avocado"
When these two colors had time to dry, I gave the figure a coat of thinned GW "Dark Green" ink.
When the ink was dry, I went back and added highlights to the front and back using the original colors.   Next, I painted the inside of the mouth with Americana "Shading Flesh", and then I painted the teeth, claws, and the spikes on his head and running down his back with Americana "Buttermilk". Then I pained his eyes with Apple Barrel "Yellow", and then added black slit pupils.
Next, I painted his turtle-shell shield with Accent "Mustard Seed", and his spear shaft with Folk Art "Barn Wood".  The rope bindings on the spear shaft I painted Americana "Mississippi Mud", and the strap on the shield I painted, Ceramcoat "Walnut". At this time I also painted the decorative rings on the shield all white in preparation for applying some bright colors to them..
When this white prep coat dried, I painted the decorative rings on the spear their final colors. I did the outer ones with Ceramcoat "Bronze", and the inner ones with White, GW "Blood Red", and GW "Hawk Turquoise". I also painted his wrist band with the "Bronze".  When everything had time to dry, I went back and applied some thinned Winsor-Newton "Peat Brown" ink, to the inside of the Lizardman's mouth, his back spikes, and claws, as well as the entire shield and spear and his wrist band.  When this dried, I went back and painted the spear tip black, and then gave it a light drybrushing with Duncan "Slate Blue", to give it the look of obsidian.  I also went back and added some highlights to the decorative rings on the spear shaft, and to the shield, in the original colors, and then I added some detail markings to the exterior of the turtle shell with the "walnut" paint.
After everything had time to dry, I gave the entire figure a coat of Ceramcoat "Matte Varnish", and when this had dried I flocked the base.  After letting everything sit overnight, I sprayed the figure with Testor's Dullcote spray paint the next day.
I am pleased with how this guy turned out.  And it proved to be a quick and simple figure to get done.
