One of our favorite restaurants in PA,
Isaacs, makes this fun rainbow bread. A friend of mine posted that she made it so I had to try.
It wasn't too hard, if you like to knead that is. I just made a regular batch of white bread, then I divided it into 6 balls. I kneaded in the right food coloring into each ball and that was an arm workout of its own. Sophie and Elanor even helped knead. After the food coloring was mixed in, I divided each colored dough into 4 balls (because I was making 4 loaves of bread). I then let the dough rise. The picture below is of the raised dough.
Next step was to put the dough into the pans. We flattened out the purple first (it looks more indigo than purple) and put it in a sprayed pan.
This step is the key to holding the dough together...brush each layer with water. That was Sophie's job and since we were making the bread as a thank you for her teachers she needed to help.
Next, let the dough rise for about an hour. Here is the bread waiting to be put in the oven.
Bake normally and here is what you get.
And here is what it looks like cut.
We used the bread last night for our burgers, Sophie and her burger.
Charlotte loved the bread. She is silly.
Elanor didn't want her picture taken last night. But I took a picture of her today when we ate at Chez Michelle, our favorite local diner (the wait staff is fabulous but never gets enough of a tip).
Sophie suggested that we make red, white and blue bread for the 4th of July. I think we will and maybe black and orange for Halloween. This could be a lot of fun.
