Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

1. What creeps you out? Some of the "psycho" movies creep me out - you know, the ones that could really happen. Goblins, mummies, vamps, werewolves, zombies - I'm ok - but crazy people - they're really out there.

2. What's your least favorite candy? Mexican chocolate - they're horrid!

3. Are you a fan of scary movies?  What's the scariest movie you've ever seen? See #1.

4. What part of life confuses you the most? How time passes by so fast. Really, I just don't feel like I should be as old as I am.

5. Pumpkin, sunflower, sesame, poppy...what's your favorite seed? Sunflower are my faves but I like them all.

6. Imagine your life ten years from today...what's changed? I have no idea - one thing I have learned is that things can change in a heartbeat.

7.  What do you a) love the most and b) like the least about the Hodgepodge?  a) I love reading everyone's answers and learning more about them. I don't always get to read every post and I have to admit that I sometimes find myself reading my favorites first but I always try to read quite a few. b) The thing I like the least would probably be the random thought - I seem to have trouble coming up with something "blog worthy."

8.  Insert your own random thought here My mother was a fanatical who thought everything was a sin - music, dancing, any religion except her own, talking on the phone, sports, pep rallies at school, the way I dressed, basically everything I did. For example she once threw a fit because I dressed my 5 year old daughter in a sundress for church. She said I was dressing her like a tramp and that everyone would look down on HER because of it. The dress was the "midi" type that came below her knees and it was adorable! Two weeks later she decided the dress was ok because other kids were wearing them to church - after insinuating that I was the worst mother on the face of the planet! All this influenced the way I raised my own children greatly. I've always tried to let them be themselves and have some fun. Looking back, I can't help but resent her but she is my mother and she is getting old. Our relationship has been strained (and that is a very big understatement) for years. Lately she has been trying to reconcile. I'm trying to "forgive and forget" but having a hard time of it. Any suggestions on how to put the past behind me?

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat. She is in the middle of the
backlash from the hurricane. Cold and lots of rain. I hope Wendell stays in the barn.
When I talked to my brother last night, they were expecting some heavy snow but they are further down than Patrice.

Questions
  1. How are you when there is a storm? I don't get too excited, just try to make sure everything is secured.
  2. Are you doing anything special in November? Just Thanksgiving dinner.
  3. Do you wear glasses or contacts? Glasses - and trifocals at that.
  4. Salty snacks or sweets? Salty - chips are my downfall.
  5. Who would you bring to the farm with you for a chat, a tour, or perhaps a visit with Wendell? I'd love to bring my whole family! Son, dil, grandson, daughter, sil -everyone! I'm sure my grandson would love Wendell!

Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

  The topic is:
Trick or Treat

The greatest prank I ever pulled. Way back in high school, my sister and I made up "business cards."  I can't remember exactly what they said but it was something referring to the recipient being pranked and they were signed "The Phantom Sisters." We had a lot of fun with those. As far as the actual pranks - I'm taking the fifth - but we never really did anything malicious. I do believe they are still wondering about how the school mascot that was on the roof of the high school got TPed. Like I said, I'm taking the fifth.

Monday Quiz About Me

Based on the original Meet Me on Monday hosted by Java at Never Growing Old, Heather over at Acting Balanced  posts 5 questions on Sunday evening along with a linky for you to link up your post answers! Since Java is back , Heather has changed the name of her hop to "Monday Quiz About Me."

This weeks Questions:

1. Do you consider Halloween a holiday for children or adults? It is for the kids and I wish people would stop trying to make it something else and just let the kids have fun.
2. At what age should children stop trick or treating? I'd say once they hit the teens, it's time to stop.
3. What are your plans for Halloween? To be at home passing out candy.
4. What frightens you? Mice! I can handle snakes and I can handle spiders but let me see a mouse and I totally freak!
My 5th question: Would you make a better wicked witch or a fairy. For me it would be the wicked witch. With my straight long hair it just comes naturally.

Blog of the Year Award - 1 Star

I have been given this awesome award by Brenda of Ponderings of an Author
http://thethoughtpalette.files.wordpress.com/2012/10/boty-1star3.jpg

SO:  The ‘rules’ for this award are simple:
1 Select the blog(s) you think deserve the ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award
2 Write a blog post and tell us about the blog(s) you have chosen – there’s no minimum or maximum number of blogs required – and ‘present’ them with their award.
3 Please include a link back to this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award – http://thethoughtpalette.co.uk/our-awards/blog-of-the-year-2012-award/   and include these ‘rules’ in your post (please don’t alter the rules or the badges!)
4 Let the blog(s) you have chosen know that you have given them this award and share the ‘rules’ with them
5 You can now also join our Facebook group – click ‘like’ on this page ‘Blog of the Year 2012’ Award Facebook group and then you can share your blog with an even wider audience
6 As a winner of the award – please add a link back to the blog that presented you with the award – and then proudly display the award on your blog and sidebar … and start collecting stars…
6 stars image
Yes – that’s right – there are stars to collect! Unlike other awards which you can only add to your blog once – this award is different! When you begin you will receive the ‘1 star’ award – and every time you are given the award by another blog – you can add another star! There are a total of 6 stars to collect. Which means that you can check out your favourite blogs – and even if they have already been given the award by someone else – you can still bestow it on them again and help them to reach the maximum 6 stars!

My choices for this award are those that I truly feel that I know:

Heather at Acting Balanced  Heather is a mom, dealing with the trials of having an autistic son but still finds time to create some awesome posts. I salute her.

Wayne at Touristic    Wayne is actually Heather's husband. Not only is he an intellectual, but he gives a man's perspective. I enjoy reading his posts and comments.

Brenda at Ponderings of an Author     I know that Brenda is the one who presented me with this award, but I HAVE to pass it back to her. I have talked to Brenda a few times on the phone and I consider her to be a good friend. Not only have our lives traveled in the same directions, but we seem to have the same views about most things. And if you haven't read her books, I highly recommend it - I've read them all and am anxiously awaiting the next!

Hilary at Feeling Beachie - Hilary hosts one of the first blog hops that I participated in, Follow Friday Four Fill-In Fun. Reading her posts and participating is that first hop is where my love for blogging began. I thank her for that.

Janice at Rockin my Journey -   Janice and I are still getting to know each other but she is quickly becoming one of my favorite stops.

Six Word Saturday

To participate all you need to do is describe your life (or something) in a phrase using just six words. For more information, go to Show My Face. and Cate will explain it. Add an image, a video, a song, nothing.

Old kitchen paneling is coming off.
What a mess it is making.
Will floor ever be clean again?
Didn't really take all that long.
Going to be so much brighter.
Once the drywall is all up

1. My high cheekbones (from the Cherokee background) are my favorite feature
2. Thinking about my cousins makes me feel old.
3. It’s been a long time since I've had a "girl's night."
4. I just don’t understand why some people have to be so hateful!

Pondering With a Purpose

Thursday again! Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Ponderings of an Author.

Her rules are really easy:

1. Grab the Pondering with a Purpose Badge (in her sidebar)
2. Look at the week's prompt
3. Post something on your blog that relates to the prompt - it can be a story, a poem, a picture -- anything you want it to be.
4. Go back here and add the URL from your post to the linky list on Brenda's.
5. Go check out the other bloggers who have added their links to the list.
6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:                               Content
Content or living your dream?
Am I living the dream? I guess that depends on what dream you're asking about. The dream I had years ago when I graduated high school early and went off to college to study Medical Technology - certainly not. After three years, I quit and got married. I always thought I'd go back and finish - at the time I just needed to do an internship and I'd have been done. But then I discovered that my husband had no desire to support me (or himself for that matter) and someone had to do it so I did. Another year went by and I was a mother, two more years and I  had another, soon after I got divorced. I lived that dream for the next 20 some years - and while those were hard years - they were good. I will never regret having my kids and have to say that those were really the best years of my life - even though they were a struggle.

So now I'm living the dream of home ownership and remodeling that home into what I want it to be. I have one grandchild and another on the way. I dream of showering those grands with lots of love. I don't have a lot of money, will probably never be able to retire, but life is really pretty good. So am I living the dream? I guess I am, although the dream has certainly changed multiple times over the years.

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

1.  So, do you like beer? I like beer in the summertime. I have been known to even drink two beers if it's really hot out. In the cooler months - not at all.

2.  What's your least favorite repetitive task? Repetitive? Does ironing count? If not, I'd say pitting cherries.

3.  When was the last time you rode a bus?  Where was it headed? I can't remember the last time I was on a bus.

4.  What song from your childhood or from your own children's childhood could make a parent's nerves stand on end? The Barney song! I have to admit that I was a "bad" mother - Barney was not allowed in my house. I simply couldn't take it.

5.  The US Presidential election cycle is drawing to a close (can I get an AMEN??), and the third and final debate was held last night...what was the last thing you 'debated about'? I like a good debate - the last one was probably about the kitchen remodel and how much of the existing paneling needs to come off. I say just one wall, Biz wants to get rid of it all. Guess who's going to win that one!

6.  Can a person make too much money?  How much is too much? I don't know - I've never been in a position to make too much - I've always dreamed of getting a paycheck and knowing that I could do anything I wanted to do with it. Sadly, that has never happened.

7.  Pop-soda-coke-something else...what's it called where you live? Coke.

8.  Insert your own random thought here. The days are getting shorter. It's dark when I come to work and it's dark soon after I get home. I know the amount of hours is the same but it just seems like there isn't any time to do anything at night. Thanksgiving will be here if just a few weeks and then Christmas! I am SO NOT READY!

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat.

Questions

  1. I just posted about some spice canisters yesterday. Do you have any funny stories about spices? Less is more - I once thought I'd jazz up the chicken cacciatore by adding more oregano and basil - Biz said it was "inedible."
  2. Have you ever carved a pumpkin? Every year!
  3. What's your favorite fall meal? Chili
  4. Do you have a hunter in the family? SIL and  daughter - in fact, I wouldn't be surprised if the nursery ends up being done in cammo.
  5. Pretend that I just won a big cash prize. Ooo! I like this already:) One of the stipulations of the prize is taking a friend out for a shopping spree and spending $1000 on them. Let's say I'm coming to your house because I chose YOU. Where would we go and what would we buy? No party poopers allowed! Have fun with this. I only wish it was real. My new counter top and back splash for the kitchen - LOWE'S here we come!

Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

  The topic is:
Whatever is on Your Mind

Broad topic - or very narrow - depending on what is going on in your life at the moment! For me, it's getting started on a project that has been put off for too long. Remember the built in cabinet I was working on last year? It is time for it to be finished. Going to tear off some more paneling this weekend and start "finishing" that part of the kitchen - cabinet included.

This weeks Questions:
1. How often do you shop for groceries? Do you shop in one place or many? Once a week and I go to a variety of places.
2. How old were you when you had your first tast of alcohol? I've been around alcohol all my life so I can't really say how old I was. I very seldom drink anything alcoholic these days.
3. How much TV do you watch? Very little-I turn it on every night when I go to bed and put the sleep timer on - that's really about it.
4. How do you relieve stress? Crochet, reading or if I'm really upset - I clean.

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!

I'm late this morning and really don't have time to try and think of a question - sorry!

6. AND most of all.... Have fun!

This Week's prompt:   Actions

What actions put a smile on my face? Little things. Like when my daughter brings me one of my favorite candy bars that you can't hardly find anymore. She buys them at Cracker Barrel every time she goes there. (the tri-colored coconut bars)

When dil posts wonderful little comments here on my blog.

When son ask for help on how to fill out his absentee ballot.

When I came home from vacation and was expecting a big mess - only to find my kitchen almost spotless.

When son calls when he gets home late at night just to talk a while before he goes to bed.

When I get a card with my grandson's hand and footprints.

When daughter calls and asks what kind of pj pants she can buy that will stretch when she gets farther along (that was the highlight of last night).

Little things that make this life worth living!

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

1. Noah Webster was born this week back in 1758....besides the online version, do you own a dictionary?  Do you ever use the hardback copy or is your hunt for a definition strictly online these days? I do own a dictionary and I do sometimes still use it!
2.  Should public schools ban Halloween celebrations?  What about other holiday celebrations currently under fire?  I don't think so - it's just a fun holiday for the kids. I think people try to read too much into things sometimes.
3.  What's your favorite 'dog' movie?  The Shaggy Dog - the old one.

4.  When were you last somewhere you'd describe as 'too quiet'? It is too quiet at my parents house. Still does not seem right for my dad to be gone.

5.  Are you a neat cook or a messy cook?  In other words do you clean as you go or make a big mess and then deal with it later?  It depends on what I'm cooking. I make a terrible mess when frying green tomatoes or zucchini (but they're worth it). Normally I try to clean as I go.
6.  Did you hear about Felix Baumgartner, the skydiver who broke the sound barrier via parachute?  Was your first thought  COOL! or was your first thought CRAZY!  Are you adventurous? I have to go with CRAZY.
7.  What's not a word but should be? thingamabob
8.  Insert your own random thought here.I need to lose some weight but I just can't seem to get motivated. I'm not obese by any means but my wardrobe would probably double if I could just take off 15 pounds. Things are a tad "snug" right now and I'm all about comfort you know. I know I can lose if I try, have done it before - Does someone want to give me a "motivational" speech to get me going?

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat.

Questions

  1. Who do you look like in your family? I have always been told that I look like my aunt Naomi. I truly hope I do.
  2. Would you rather read a novel, a poem, a magazine, or a how-to book? A novel
  3. Is there anything in your future that seems challenging, daunting, or "larger than life"? The trip to England.
  4. Do you have any big projects for this season? (DIY/household/craft or sewing/home business/ whatever you consider a project) I have lots of projects! More house remodeling (tearing out a wall in the kitchen and getting new countertops!
  5. Please finish this: It made me so happy to find out that daughter is expecting.

Coffee Chat

Time for the Coffee Chat! If you'd like to join, head over to Leslie's at Time out for Mom.

  The topic is:
Fashion

As far as fashion goes, I am definitely NOT the one to ask. I go for comfort whenever possible. If I could live in a pair of pajama pants, I would. Sadly, I can't. I have to dress for work. So here are my ideas:

I love boots - tall boots with long skirts and most days, that is what you'll find me in. Today, however, I happen to be wearing a knee length skirt with a taylored blouse. But the boots are still there.

When I have to do conferences and have to look "professional" I usually go with dress slacks and a jacket. You can't go wrong there.

Whatever Leslie wears at her conference, I'm sure she'll do fine. Bring back lots of ideas for us!

1. What is the most interesting fact you have learned recently? Well, lets see. In my Computer Forensics class I'm learning how to go in and find things that have been deleted. I've also learned how to format a drive in order to be able to "hide" things and I find it fascinating.
2. The alarm goes off on Monday morning.  What is your first thought? Here we go again.
3. What is the most memorable movie line of all time? "Frankly, my dear........."
4. Describe a situation that always seems to try your patience. I hate it when people want to discuss politics and gripe about the way things are - and then you find out that they don't even bother to vote!
.

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!
About the "Twitter" thing. I do have an account but I RARELY use it. What is the big deal? Please, someone explain.

October - and Still Making Jam

Just made two more batches of Hot Pepper Jelly - and there are still more peppers out there, although they are pretty small. Not sure if they will make or not. Last year I was canning tomatoes in October - the seasons must truly be changing.

Then I made some zucchini bread and I must say it is AWESOME - with butter, not hot pepper jelly of course.

Pondering With a Purpose

Thursday again! Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Fiction With a Purpose.

Have fun!

This Week's prompt:   History - do you or don't you?

I do learn from my mistakes. I no longer let people take advantage of me and I will no longer tolerate the intolerable just to be in a "romantic" relationship with a man. Maybe this means that I will never have that sort of relationship again - who knows. If that's the way it is, so be it.

It has been said that I am bitter but I don't believe that's true. I'm just smarter. What's mine is mine, I've worked for it and I'm keeping it. I support myself and will help my children if they need it but I will not support  anyone who does not want to support themselves. I once had a man say to me, "You supported your ex for 10 years, why can't you support me?" Really?!! Don't think so buddy.

I do have a man in my life and while it may not be a "romantic" thing, he pulls his weight. He helps financially and has helped a lot with the remodeling of the house. He's a good person and a good companion and that's enough.

Sorry about the "man bashing" today - I haven't done that in a long time and I do know that there are still a lot of good ones out there.

Hodgepodge

Welcome back to the Wednesday Hodgepodge! Be sure to add your link to the bottom of Joyce's post and then go visit the neighbors. After all, that's part of the fun!

1.  In what ways do you indulge yourself? Coffee or espresso.
2.  Have you ever taken a cooking class?  Any interest?  What type of class would you most like to try? I haven't but would like to take some sort of French cooking class. Their food always looks so rich and yummy.
3. What does it mean to be a good citizen? I think it means doing your civic duty - like voting and trying to stay on top of things. Giving some of your time if at all possible is also a way of giving back. Obeying the laws of course helps too.
4.  'Tis the season of the political advert...do these ads influence your vote? I try to avoid the ads.
5.  What's something you see today that makes you wish you were a kid again? I can honestly say that I haven't seen anything to make me want to be a kid again.
6.  What's your least favorite cliche? Not a big fan of cliches - really can't think of one that is any worse than another.
7.  What percentage of your Christmas shopping has been completed?  How does that make you feel? Very little, possibly 10% - and it makes me feel like I need to get busy.
8.  Insert your own random thought here. I've been driving the truck for the past couple of days since the car was in the shop. Got it back last night but I forgot to put my parking hangtag back in it. The only thought on my mind this morning is getting Parking Services called first thing when they get in so that I don't get ticketed.

Chats on the Farmhouse Porch

It's time to head over to Patrice's porch for the weekly chat.

Questions

  1. Do you like to have a variety of handbags, or are you happy with one old favorite? I have a variety - mostly all hand me downs from the daughter. But she has gotten into the Miche bags now so I don't get any "new to me" one anymore.
  2. Do prefer to have your hair long or short? I have always loved long hair. I tend to cut mine all off every couple of years though since it is as straight as a stick and tends to just "hang" there. Right now I'm torn about whether I want to cut it or let it grow some more.
  3. Are you doing any crafts for fall? I don't have time for crafts. I'll be crocheting baby things all winter for the new grand coming in April.
  4. What's your favorite sweetener to use? Sugar
  5. Tell me something interesting. Interesting? The Hatfield McCoy Dinner Feud was interesting, and so was the wax museum. I wasn't all that excited about the Titanic exhibit but daughter loved it. And the Christmas place - honestly, I don't know how the people who work there could manage to have any Christmas spirit at all when it is Christmas! I think it would take some of the wonder and excitement out of it if you saw it every day. We were a couple of weeks too early for the really pretty fall colors but it's is always beautiful in the mountains. Oh, and we just had to have our pictures taken while we were there.

    This weeks Questions:
    1. What is the nicest thing someone has ever done for you on your birthday? The kids used to make me coffee on my birthday and clean their rooms without being told to.

    2. What is the funniest thing that ever happen to you while you were on a 'date'? It's been so long since I've been on a date that I really can't remember.

    3. What is your favorite backhanded compliment? Some sort of sarcastic remark when people do something stupid.

    4. Have you ever had someone guest blog for you? If so, how was the experience? No - at least not yet.

And don't forget to add a 5th Question on your own blog so we can answer as we hop around!
I'm going to keep it simple today and just ask this: When it comes to technology, are you the first in line for something new, or do you wait until the price goes down?

Each week, Hilary over at Feeling Beachie lists four statements with a blank for you to fill in on your own blogs.  This week’s co-host is Lisa from Third Time is a Charm - she came up with the last two statements. So, please tweet, FaceBook share, and add the linky to your post…

    This week’s statements:
    1. I am very independent.
    2. I am most comfy in a pair of pajama pants.
    3. You will never believe what I saw on my way home from vacation - really, the way some people drive is just WRONG! And BTW - I don't know how some of you guys deal with traffic on a daily basis - makes me glad I live in a very small town.
    4. My mornings don’t start until  the coffee happens.

    Pondering With a Purpose

Thursday again! Time to do a little "pondering" with Brenda from Fiction With a Purpose.

Have fun!

This Week's prompt:   Practical or not?

I've always been practical. I try not to spend money on frivolous things. But I just spent A LOT (for me at least) on a vacation. But it was what daughter wanted to do and we had a good time. Last night I posted pictures - if anyone is interested, just scroll down a few posts. Now I ask myself why not go to England? And I have not come up with a good answer. True, the house still needs some remodeling, but that can wait - right?

    The Christmas Place

Daughter had to go to the Christmas Place to get an ornament - it says "Expecting" and her due date.

    Had to do it!

    The Wax Museum

We both enjoyed the wax museum!
