This is the 2nd album of George Lewis in Black Saint. As intlligent musician, together with friends of AACM, he exapnds experimental world in music wider and deeper. Every title has different combination players and instruments. Muscial pointillism, which Roscoe Mitchell was questing in one time, becomes strong and apparent.

Recorded in concert at A Space, Toronto on the 4th and 5th of October 1975.

From the middle of 1970s, each member of Art Ensemble of Chicago (AEOC) started their own activities, as well as AEOC. Lester Bowie and Malachai Favors played music of combining Afro-American root music and free improvisation. Joseph Jarman and Don Moye seeked way to synthesize African ethnic music and improvisation music. The way of Roscoe Mitchell was the more avand-garde manners. He started quest from solo play with his ability as multi-reeds player in music of abstract and modern tastes. Different from other four collegues, his music at that time has very little taste of African or Afro-American.

This live album, issued by Sackville on 1975, is one of the typical ones. The music created by Roscoe and other three musicians is unique which not everyone can accept. But once attracted, this have very strong bind.

This is very outstaindingly gigantic works in its lengthy and numbers of players in free jazz orchestral works. Non-stop over 2 hours and 20 minutes long and participants are as the above. His previous album of Celestrial communication orchestra "Luna Surface" (same in BYG label) is chaotic music. Drastic collective improvisation continues in 30 and several minutes. But this Seasons is different. Parts of Corrective imporvisation, arranged, solos are allocated in calculated manner. Sounds vary in stream of music. Whole work arises unique imagination in listners.

The Art Ensemble of Chicago had just returned to Chicago after several years in Europe when they recorded this continuous 76-minute concert. Drummer Don Moye (who had recently joined the classic avant-garde group) was proving to be a major asset, holding his own with trumpeter Lester Bowie, the reeds of Joseph Jarman and Roscoe Mitchell, and bassist Malachi Favors. Although there are some meandering moments during their lengthy set, the music almost always holds on to one's interest (a humorous drunken march is a high point) and gives listeners a very good idea of how the Art Ensemble sounded in its early days when it was not at all shy about exploring music's outer limits. You either love or hate these guys. If you believe that jazz is the sound of surprise, then these fellows occupy a special place in your heart. If, like others, you believe jazz is to be taken seriously and played only by men in suits, then this record will drive you batty. True to form, the tunes here have the loose kinetic swing that drives their early records, Ornette-ish funk and Miles-ish bop fractured by the hoots of whistles and the occasional yelp. Beyond everything else, though, is the undeniable fact that these gentlemen are sterling musicians and everything is done for a purpose, exactly when they want it to happen. A wonderful record by a bunch of really great guys.

This limited-edition five-CD set available directly from Nessa not only reissues the important free jazz albums Old/Quartet, Numbers 1 & 2, and Congliptious but contains quite a bit of music taken from rehearsals by the members of the group that would by 1969 become known as the Art Ensemble of Chicago. With such advanced improvisers as trumpeter Lester Bowie, Roscoe Mitchell and Joseph Jarman on reeds, bassist Malachi Favors, drummer Phillip Wilson, and appearances from bassist Charles Clark, drummers Robert Crowder and Thurman Barker, the music is usually very emotional and sometimes quite scary. There are meandering sections and individual performances that do not work all that well, but in general the music is quite colorful, adventurous, and innovative: in many ways the beginning of the modern avant-garde.
