This is the 2nd album of George Lewis in Black Saint. As intlligent musician, together with friends of AACM, he exapnds experimental world in music wider and deeper. Every title has different combination players and instruments. Muscial pointillism, which Roscoe Mitchell was questing in one time, becomes strong and apparent.

This is duo collaboration between Joe and John.

John's ARP synthesizer reminds us of time when synthesizer was very experimental and unique device, which provoked artist who wanted to try something new, though not all could succeed.

This is ripped from vinyl.

From this album, Joe's music begins to have more clear fetures of quest and trial for new expression, getting out of normal "Free jazz" at that time. Result is wonderful by not only Joe but also sharing attitude to seek creativity by other two.

This is ripped from vinyl. Hoping this blog could be good introduction to those who, getting interested in this wonderful music, for purchasing CD or mp3 download for better quality sound.

Baikida Carroll - Orange fish tears(1974)

Baikida Carroll - Orange fish tears(1974)

Titles:
Side A: Orange fish tears
Forest scorpion

Side B: Rue roger
Porte D' Orleans

Baikida e.j. Carroll - trp, flh, seal horn, perc.
Olver Lake - ss, as, ts, fl, bamboo fl, perc.
Nana Vasconcelos - perc.
Manuel Villardel - ac piano, elc piano, perc.

rec. at Paris, June 1974, 3,4,5

This is the first leader album of Baikida Carroll. It seems there was no repress in vinyl, no issuance in CD.
So this seems rare item.

As is the first album sometimes, Baikida tries to show various aspects of his music interests. That is,
the first track is very spiritual and tranquill. The second track has taste of ethinic music. On repeting rhythm pattern on percussion, which reminds us of Latin American
dance. The third is duo of Baikida and Oliver in abstract form which is one of free improvisation form Roscoe Mirchell likes. The fourth number is collective
free improvisation style of AACM / BAG. This shows his good charcteristics of BAG member.

This is ripped from vinyl. When I obtained this, there was repeting scratch on side B, regrettably.
Hoping anyone having this music would upload better one.

Anyway, pls. enjoy this one of the nice "the first album" of musicians.

Bass, Electric Bass - Alex Blake
Cello - Abdul Wadud
Drums, Written-By, Producer - Charles "Bobo" Shaw
Electric Guitar, Acoustic Guitar - Francois Nyomo Mantuila
Saxophone [Soprano] - Julius Hemphill
Trombone - Joseph Bowie

Recorded at Studio Rivbea, New York, mastered at The Master Cutting Room, New York

This is ripped from the cassette tape which records original version issued by Universal Justice label. Later, Muse label issued this as P'unk J'zz. In order And title order is changed, namely, Jacki Bee Tee is A2, and Concere Ntasiah is B1.

I found out Muse ver is uploaded. But, in that file, scratch tone continues, which would give disturbance to a listner with
headphone. So I up again this which does not have scratch tone in interrupting level, though sound quality is not ideal as ripped
from the cassette tape, because this is excelent work in spiritual jazz.

This is one of albums of George Lewis in youg days. Characteristics of his music appears very clear in
this. Namely, Side A is duo improvisation with Douglas Ewart, who is same generation collegue of AACM at that time.
Side B is experimental trial with electronics and acoustic instlments.

As total sound is not so abstract and fragmental, easy to listen than its impression.

Roscoe Mitchell Quartet - Live(Sackville - 1975)

Roscoe Mitchell Quartet(1975)

Tracklist:
A1 Tnoona 6:42
A2 Music For Trombone And B♭ Soprano 14:35
B1 Cards 10:00
B2 Olobo

Personnel:
Roscoe Mitchell - Alto, Tenor, B♭ Soprano sax
Spencer Barefield - Guitar
Muhal Richard Abrams - Piano
George Lewis - Trombone

Recorded in concert at A Space, Toronto on the 4th and 5th of October 1975.

From the middle of 1970s, each member of Art Ensemble of Chicago (AEOC) started their own activities, as well as AEOC. Lester Bowie and Malachai Favors played music of combining Afro-American root music and free improvisation. Joseph Jarman and Don Moye seeked way to synthesize African ethnic music and improvisation music. The way of Roscoe Mitchell was the more avand-garde manners. He started quest from solo play with his ability as multi-reeds player in music of abstract and modern tastes. Different from other four collegues, his music at that time has very little taste of African or Afro-American.

This live album, issued by Sackville on 1975, is one of the typical ones. The music created by Roscoe and other three musicians is unique which not everyone can accept. But once attracted, this have very strong bind.

This vinyl issed on 1975 is recorded live at the first presentation of a Modern Day Black Opera :
"Africa Is Calling Me", performed at the Center American for Students and Artists in Paris, France on May 25, 1974.

And, by the producer of this vinyl was inspired by this opera, and he adopted five scenes, and made this album.

Bob Reid is bassist. He played with Archie Shepp, Francois Tuesques at the begining of 1970s.

In this album, I think, players known are himself and Oliver Lake only. Others are
not known.

Spirituality filled up in this opera calling for freedom to not only black people but also for all human races expresses political atomosphere of the time this music was perforemed.

Mixed By, Mastered By - Peter Pfister
Producer - Pia & Werner X. Uehlinger
Recorded By, Liner Notes - Chris Albertson

This is valuable record of young days of Joe McPhee. Live recording of Joe McPhee & Survival unit II on 1971. One year before, Joe issued two important albums of his early
days, namely “Nation Time” and “Black Magic Man”.

I have no idea about Survival unit I, when this existed, consisted of who, any recording has been issued, sold in vinyl’s, CDs. Though I researched on web, I could not find out Information.

Anyway, it is interesting for funs of Joe McPhee to know that, after one year of issuance of important works in his early days, how “Survival Unit II” was as jazz combo, and what kind of music they generated.

In this album, first three titles are more or less typical free jazz tunes of that time. And the later three titles have new and experimental elements, which lead to Joe’s music of later years.

Tracklist
1 Oriental Mood 8:58
2 Aurora Borealis 7:48

4 Being 6:31
5 Pluto 3:54

Personnel:
Tenor Saxophone - Frank Wright
Alto Saxophone, Composed By - Noah Howard
Drums - Arthur Taylor
Piano - Bobby Few

Recorded 1970 in Paris.

This is the album of Frank Wright as leader. But all titels are written by Noah Howard. Frank Wright, Noah Howard and Bobby Few recorded others such as Church Number 9, One for John. But, both have Muhamed Ali as drumer. But in this album, Art Taylor partipates. I think it is rare that Art Taylor played in free jazz work. Not bad play, I guess.

The first title "Orient Mood" has same theme of "Mt Fuji" in Howard's work "Black Ark" recorded in1969. Accordting to my friend studying Japanese music, the pentatonic scale of this theme is not used in traditional music of Japan.
This is rather Chinese music, he said.

Alto Saxophone - Jimmy Lyons
Trumpet - Raphe Malik
Violin - Ramsey Ameen
Bass - Sirone
Drums - Ronald Shannon Jackson

Engineer - Don Puluse
Producer - Sam Parkins

Recorded at April 1978.

Together with "Cecil Tylor unit 1978" and "Live at Black Forest", this "3 Phasis"
were recorded by Cecil Taylor Unit of 1978.
Since Alan Silva left the unit in 1966, Cecil Taylor unit had been in principle without bass.
And in this unit, combination of bass of Sirone (who once joined with Cecil in "Spring of two blue-J's in 1973) and
drums of Ronald Shannon Jackson generates different rhythm groove from Alan Silva and Andrew Cyrille.

B Sperichill On Calling 25:08

Personnels:
Piano, Written-By - Cecil Taylor

Drums - Ron Jackson
Saxophone [Alto] - Jimmy Lyons
Trumpet - Raphe Malik
Violin - Ramsey Ameen

Recorded live on 3 June 1978 in SWF-Radio Jazz Concert in Kirchzarten, Black Forest, West Germany.

This is one of four records of Cecil Taylor Unit of six personel in 1978 year. Live recording.
Cecil Taylor unit would remind us of Unit Structure and Conquistdor in 1966 year. Good mixture and balance of composed parts and free improvisation parts are similar to both units. On the other hand, passing of twelve years and different members (only Jimmy Lyons and Cecil Taylor himself are same personnels in both units) bring about changes in characteristics of music.

This is converted from casset tape into mp3. I think quality is enough to introduce this wonderful music, though not ideal.

Reissue Producer - John Corbett

I think this is very rare item of Human Arts Ensemble. Luther Thomas takes leader initiative. But different from
"Funkey Donkey", this is more abstract form than funk music.

Human Arts Ensemble starts in AACM style performance in begining time. Then their style change in soul & funk music.
I think this is interesting record to show their way to change, though quality of music would not be high enough their other issued albums.

This is wonderful work in spacy and spiritual atmosphere. As far as I know, this album has not been re-issued. I have no idea why this kind of high quality and has been in such status for years.

Hoping more music fun will find out this and know which would lead to re-issuance of such unique and valuable record of human art.
