Things we struggle with

Me:  Patience.  Lately, I find myself getting annoyed at small things.  Raising little children can be demanding and exhausting, but I realize most of the time my impatience comes from over-scheduling.  I find myself saying, "hurry up!!!" way too often.  Or I get annoyed when I have things on my own agenda that I don't want to put on the back burner.  Sometimes I grumble when the kids don't act a few years older than they actually are.  Yet in my heart I know they're growing up so quick and this time of needing a lot of help will be gone before I know it.  **sigh**

Lying.  This little girl HATES to get in trouble.  And she loves praise (who doesn't?)  Honesty has always been an issue for her.  I fear we haven't made much progress since age 2.
Pouting.  I'm not sure we've made much progress here either.
Cluelessness.  I can't tell you how many times this boy exits the bathroom wearing nothing but a smile.  I'm really not sure how we can help him not be so spacey, but we are making progress on the bathroom exit.  I think.

Temper.  Ooooh.  Can this boy throw a fit!!!  Usually this reaction comes when he's out of food, wants a drink or wants someone to pick him up.  So, yeah, that's a lot of times.  When he was younger, we thought he was shaking with excitement like his bro.  No.  Its fury.

Geo:  Well, he's lucky enough not to have his faults publicized to the world.

Hike to Lanikai Pillboxes

We've been wanting to hike to the Lanikai pillboxes for a while and finally checked it off the list.  One of our friends was having a birthday party at Kailua beach park, so we decided to make the hike first and then cool off at the beach.  It was a great hike, but we should have started a little earlier to beat the heat - whew!

Made it to the first pillbox.

Isn't that water gorgeous?!?  So clear!
Inside the (very colorful) first pillbox

There is just a peek of the 1st pillbox in this picture.  The trail goes along the ridge and the decent was a little tricky.  Geo and I held the kids' hands the whole way.  Cole checked for lice.

We were hot and sweaty by the end of the thing and were happy to meet our friends at the beach below.  What a fun Saturday!  (and everyone slept well that night :)

Lucy's Golden Birthday

$1 in each balloon.
She thought this was pretty fun!
This year, Lucy turned 7 on the 7th... that's right... the GOLDEN birthday!  We tried to add in a few "golden" things to make her day extra special.
GOLDEN oreos, GOLDEN grahams, & GOLD fish (which delivered 6 babies the next day -
7 fish in the bowl... pretty lucky!)
For birthdays, kids usually bring in some sort of snack (or lunch) for the class.  I showed Lucy some golden treat ideas on the internet and she picked her favorite.  We found a bunch of gold candy to put into bags and then made Olympic torches (paper cones with cheetos & popcorn).   We had a great time putting them together!  I asked Elise to grab the camera, so the above pictures are her work.  Except there were several more of her toes.  :)
The teacher decided to move lunches outside and the wind blew the cheetos and popcorn all over.  Oops. But the candy was a success.

and more friends join in!
We do bigger friend birthday parties on the even years but wanted to do something fun on her actual day.  So Lucy chose to go mini-golfing at Glow Putt in the mall with her friend, Sydnee.  I left the other kids with my friend and took these two out for golfing and ice cream.  They golfed 18 holes in less than 15 minutes.  The guy in charge was so nice and gave Lucy a glow necklace for her birthday.  She was thrilled!

And now... PRESENT time!  Elise hid under the reading chair and jumped out.  It was pretty cute!

gathering more and more interest

even dad wants to see now!
I made a sugar cookie cake and cut it out into the shape of a big 'ol 7.  The rest of us got small 7's.  Austin thought this was the coolest thing ever.  The only gold candles I could find were some of those trick candles that re-light.  George and I got quite a chuckle out of the whole thing.  We had a great time with the "golden birthday" theme!  George mentioned as we were eating our treat that its too bad that it will be 19 more years before we have another one in the family!

How grateful we are for our first-born child!  Sometimes I feel a little bad for her since she's kind of experimented on since she's the first to go through a stage.  But then I feel a little sympathy for all of them since each time feels "new" with different personalities, etc.  Its tricky learning how to be a good parent.  But Lucy has been patient with us and is a child that really likes to be good.  She definitely has the oldest child "control gene", but she's always thinking up games or ideas of things to play with her sibs and they love her to be home.  She kisses them all as she leaves for school.  Lucy loves to read and was happy to receive a reading chair for her room and a book night light!  She doesn't love dolls so much but prefers stuffed animals.  She has a pile of her favorites including two extra special ones from Open Market last year - a hot pink bear with one eye and a big brown floppy bunny.  She also loves to go to school.  She's kind to others and is a good listener.  I noticed this summer that Lucy's getting better and better about pitching in and helping at home.  I really missed her when she had to go back to school.  We feel lucky to have this sweet 7 year old in our lives!!!

Randoms of July

We made a fort and read stories inside.  Elise was the coolest with the fort building.  She loved using the clothes pins and was really good at it!  Fun!

This summer, we made up a weekly plan based on this lady's idea.  We did:  Make something Monday (usually a crafty thing), Be thoughtful Tuesday (service), What's cookin' Wednesday, Time to Read Thursday (trip to library or new book), Field trip or Friends play Friday.  We didn't follow the schedule religiously, but really did pretty well.  It brought a little organization to our summer without overdoing it.  Here's some pics of some of the things we "cooked" on our Wednesdays - shark, pig (love the faces), palm trees (kids came up with the idea of coconuts as chocolate chips.  Their trees were loaded!), and pretzel pictures.  We also tried some new deserts.  Yum!
Playing "camping."
(really an excuse to haul junk from place to place)
I bought this nail painting pen and the girls (esp Elise)
 had a ball making "decorations"
"Look mom!  I made Saturn!"
One Friday night, George took the boys fishing (they have a monthly fishing trip with the church) and I took the girls to the Tahitian Dance competition at the Polynesian Culture Center.  We wanted to attend the "invitation only" competition, which was advertised from 7-9pm.  They ask "the best" tahitian dancers from the islands to have a dance off - 3 men, 3 women, 3 rounds each.  Well, I'm not sure if the schedule changed or they were running late or what, but we ended up watching the keiki division round 2 (ages 4-18 - grouped every 1-2 years).  But the announcer talked up the "invitation only" competition so much, the girls were dying to stay to see it.  We left at midnight.  I bought them both bottled root beers during intermission and in the last two hours, I made 6 trips to the bathroom with someone claiming it was an emergency.  The dancing and drumming and costumes were quite amazing.  The girls asked to go back next year and especially loved watching the girls dance who were their age.  While the judges were tallying the results, random people would come up and dance.  And if anyone else in the audience knew the dance, they'd stand up where they were and dance/sing along.  Cool!  (Austin LOVED the fishing, by the way.  Cole...eh, not so much.)

Lucy attended tennis camp for a week.  It was held at Pearl Harbor from 8:30-12 every day.  She thought it was great!  Now we need to get out and practice with her.
One day, after we picked up Lu from tennis, we snagged Geo and ate lunch at a park on Hickam AFB.  It was a beautiful day and probably one of my favorites memories of the summer.  I just loved listening to the kids laugh.  Elise showed Lucy how she could stand up and swing and Lucy nearly had a heart attack.  When I told her it was fine, she tried to copy... until she chickened out half-way up.  Funny!

George's work group has a family party every year in the summer time.  This year it was held at a park on base.  The kids were especially excited about the dunk tank.  And I could not get Austin out of the bounce house.

Many summer days were spent playing school.  Here is Lucy with her math manipulatives.  Lacey, are you so proud?  :)  And if you look closely, you might be able to see Elise's braiding of leaves on the sides of the chairs.  I found lots of leaves stuck together with scotch tape too.  Apparently these were the "crafts."

We had an indoor picnic one day when it was raining outside.  It was "Teddy Bear picnic" day (who knew?) but no one wanted to bring a bear.  Austin chose "Trucky" which is apparently the name he gave Elise's boy doll.  Since then, I've noticed whenever they play pretend anything, "Trucky" becomes Austin's name (or the horse's or dinosaur's or whatever.)  He was kind of ticked that Elise made Trucky into a girl by putting a bunch of elastics in his hair.

this is how Elise gets her dog and wolf to "stay and not leave."  scary.
riding the Nene Geese at the Bishop Museum

At the start of the summer, we made a family bucket list of things we wanted to do.  Everyone said one or two things.  Austin's request:  "Draw a big biting seal."  Ummmm... ok.  check.  (Although I think this looks an awful lot like Mrs. Potts.)
I've mentioned a few times how much Cole likes to unload the cupboards.  One night, we found him "drinking" the vanilla like a shot glass.  We laughed and laughed.  Every day, he empties all of the cupcake wrappers, crinkles about 10 and throws them in the blender or the garbage can.  Another thing about Cole:  He hits now.  I know this is a bad thing.  But I admit, sometimes I turn my back and ignore.  The thing is, the other three totally deserve it for all the torture they've put him through the past 14 months (especially the middle two).  The kids are sitting watching a movie and he'll walk behind them and smack each one down the line.  It's kind of funny.    He also has this furious windmill/helicopter swing.  He uses this when Elise gets too close to his face.  Its quite comical.  He's starting to fight back!
