My hardback copy of The Traveller Book arrived today.
Well worth the $20 I paid for it.  Happy to have this to add to my collection.  Now to just find the time to squeeze in some gaming!

Starter Traveller

Some folks have asked me about Classic Traveller, for those who don't know Starter Traveller is actually available in PDF for FREE
So you can download it for free to get an idea of what Old School Traveller is like. The Traveller Book I just ordered builds on what is in Starter Traveller.

STARCRASH

Being in a Sci Fi mood of late, I thought I'd track down a Sci Fi movie from the 70's that I have heard about but never seen.  That movie was Starcrash!  I watched it last night and I'm not sure where to begin!
This movie is so Cheesy that the Cheese has extra Cheese!  But you know what, it was so bad that it was good.  The plot was ridiculous, acting terrible, special effects bad even for the era it was filmed in.  But you know what I kinda enjoyed it!
And not just because of the scantily clad leading lady.   LOL

My favorite character was actually the "Tin-Horn" law-man Robot Elle.
I may have to try to adapt some stuff from it for my next Sci Fi Campaign.

Classic Traveller

Just ordered The Traveller Book off of RPGNOW. I had a blast playing Classic Traveller back in High School, we had Study Hall right after lunch, we would wolf down our lunch and start playing then extend our game into Study Hall.  Needless to say, we didn't get much studying done, we were too busy conducting guerrilla raids, engaging in galactic piracy, looting, pillaging and selling black market goods.  Ahh Good Times. Fortunately I've found I never needed Algebra in my adult life so I think it worked out pretty well.  LOL,  I contacted my best friend since High School, he lives many miles away so we may try to get in some gaming with Google Hangouts, we haven't ever played any games on-line, but Classic Traveller seems like the perfect game mechanic for it.  Will see how it goes!

Are You Ready For Some Sci Fi!

I didn't realize how many Digest Size Sci Fi gaming books I had!  Most are from the old Justifiers game, but there are some others as well.  : )

Sci Fi Sunday!

Not sure Sci Fi Sunday will be a regular feature, but I found these two pictures and thought they were just too cool not to share.

This one gives me lots of ideas for Sci Fi gaming, a forbidden planet named El Dorado, with an abandoned outpost, buried beneath the planet's surface is some alien horror that is hungry to be released upon your unsuspecting players!

Here's the second one I found, both are album covers for Iron Maiden. Very cool! And full of ideas for your Sci Fi Games!

Happy Simian Saturday!!

Oh and to make this post a bit more cooler, I just found where Starter Traveller RPG is on sale for FREE!
Check it out here!  It's a Christmas Special running through December 31st!  All the recent STARSLUGS posts on various blogs have got me looking at Traveller again.
Have a great Simian Saturday!

Prime Directive Traveller!

I just recently read where the Prime Directive RPG will be adapted to the Mongoose Traveller System.  I think this is awesome news!  This makes the Gamer Geek in me all giddy, much like the Crew in the photo above.  I can see mixing all kinds of things; Andorian Commandos battling Vargr Corsairs, while a Strontium Dog hunts down a rogue Vulcan Psion in the ruins of The Cursed Earth... Oh my!   : )
The recent Klingon Gorillas post I did featured the cover of the d20 Modern version of a supplement from the Prime Directive game.

Cursed Earth!!

 I Am The Law!
Well ok I'm not, but Judge Dredd is...
I recently discovered a really cool TPB from the Judge Dredd comics of the late 70's.

With the storyline being so cool from a P.A. wild and wahoo perspective I tracked down the Mongoose Traveller RPG Supplement for it! And was not disappointed.

Here's the blurb about it:
"If you thought the streets of Mega-City One were bad, wait until you take a walk outside the city! The Cursed Earth is a blasted, irradiated wasteland filled with mutants, desperadoes and renegades eking out an existence in the most hellish place on the planet. Stretching across the old continental United States, the Cursed Earth separates the three great Mega-Cities of America. Judges often have cause to venture out into danger, to pursue renegade perps, stall mutant invasions or even just to introduce rookies to the Cursed Earth in order to fulfil their training requirements. With this complete guide to the Cursed Earth, you can take your adventures into the hellish heartland of America."

Here's a world map I found.
There is some great stuff in this setting that I am going to plug directly into my Mutant Future Campaign.  While I don't plan on running a Judge Dredd Campaign anytime soon, there is plenty of stuff that you can use without needing the Judge references.
Hmmm when did Jimmy Carter get a face on Mt. Rushmore?  LOL

d66 Compendium

I've been on a Sci Fi kick of late, Mutant Future is great but I'd like to play something a bit more Space Operaish at some point.  I've been looking at a bunch of different systems, picking up rules here and there in PDF, but being a book in hand (Dead Tree) kinda grognard I tend to order print products if the pdf looks good to me.  I'm working around computers all day at work so I prefer to read a book the old fashioned way when I get home.  Just weird that way I guess.  Anyways having not finalized the RPG system which I hope to use at some point (although Stars Without Number is high on my list), I've been looking at gaming resources that can be used with multiple systems.
I recently came across Jon Brazer Enterprises d66 Compendium, it is a supplement of various tables to help "fill out" one's sci fi campaigns.  It is designed for Traveller but I see no problems using it for whatever Sci Fi setting your using.
Just sitting at my computer with my copy of the d66 compendium and making a few random rolls with my trusty d6's I came up with...

The Starship Arkham made its final approach to the planet Zelos, skirting past the dozens of antique communication satellites locked in orbit around the world.  Contact was made with Bayoone Starport far below, their contact would get them past the prying eyes of the Theocrats that would surely frown upon the Arkham's illegal cargo of Solomani Hemp!
Captain Noah wolfed down his bowl of Pink Curry Rice in the galley,  the Zelosians had bizarre laws about meals and eating and he didn't want to deal with the locals on an empty stomach. Noah made his way to the bridge, moving quickly he was long accustomed to the dim interior lighting on the ship, a design flaw that he'd never bothered to have fixed.  What he wasn't accustomed to was the dead fish smell that permeated the ship's corridors, a more recent "addition" to the ship, a hold over from their last passenger "ambassadress" Hekenu and her entourage, Noah disliked most aliens, but did his best to hide his prejudices. That would be bad for business, but their fishy smell just refused to go away.  After this run he'd have to have the whole ship's interior flash scrubbed just to get rid of the stench.  He should have made them wear vacc suits the whole time.
Imad their contact appeared on the comm screen, giving the landing coordinates, that would hopefully allow them to avoid the eyes and ears of the Theocrats.  Noah gave a slight smirk, eyeing the elephants in the background of Imad's screen, on Zelos all starport goods must be transported via pachyderm.  Another of the Theocrats bizarre laws.
Noah checked to make sure his trusty blaster,"Vera" was fully charged and prepared to land.

The Empire Strikes Back "1950's Style"

Still feeling blah, wife won't let me go back to work.  Fever Smever...
Anyways, after Sunday's off the cuff Mutant Future game, the guys said they'd like to maybe play something Sci Fi. Battling the Kevlar Armored Goatlord with his Laser Pistol really sparked their interest in guns and such. I'll admit I've been on a bit of a Sci Fi kick of late myself.  I may have to look into Mongoose Traveller a bit more.  Meanwhile here's a little something I stumbled across on the 'net.

Hunter Prey

I posted about this movie awhile ago. I just read where it will be available as a direct to DVD release in December. I may just have to pick this up.  Looks pretty cool. Could make for some fun Traveller (or other sci fi) game inspiration!

Warp Riders

I was recently  made aware that the group The Sword has released their third album; Warp Riders. I really like this band, so asap I went out and picked up the album.  I was not disappointed and as an added bonus, I found the album cover to be quite awesome!
This just begs to be a used as inspiration for a Sci-Fi Campaign!  Now to just decide on a rules system??
Mini-Six, Savage Worlds, Traveller, hmm things to ponder!

Latest Acquisitions...

I had some credit at Noble Knight Games that was burning a hole in my pocket so to speak.  I'd been trying to hold off and get the Dungeon Alphabet with it, that I've heard so many great things about, but they can't seem to get it in stock.  Sooo I picked up a few other items.  Featured above is what arrived today from my order.  First in the top left is a very old Sci Fi product put out by Phoenix Games, it called Spacefarers Guide to Alien Races I'll be using this as inspiration for my X-plorers games, it has conversion notes to Traveller and other old systems (the product came out in '79), next to it is a great book The Random Esoteric Creature Generator, I really like this product and can't wait to use it to make up some interesting critters! Last but not least is the latest Edition of Labyrinth Lord. Nicely done, and just all manner of OSR coolness.
Now to just find the time to make use of some of these products. *sigh*

Hunter Prey (Upcoming Sci Fi movie)

I came across this while surfing the 'net today.  Check it out.  It looks pretty cool.
Here's a link to the official page.  Be sure and check out the trailer!
*Update 1/24/10 I've recently picked up the X-plorers RPG, I think Hunter Prey will be a great inspiration for X-plorers games!
