Cheap Terrain "Mat"

My wife "decided" that "we" needed to go to the fabric store today.  Gee...uh...yeah...err...ummm...ok...errr..  Anyways while she shopped I found myself wandering aimlessly, then I got an idea, actually my bud Eli had suggested it to me awhile ago, but I had forgotten.  You see I very much am into minis, I haven't posted much about minis in awhile, my camera is lousy on small pics and we just haven't gotten a new one. But for the past year and a half I have fully jumped on the 15mm Sci Fi minis bandwagon! My wife doesn't mind cause they are waay cheaper than 28mm and take up a fraction of the space. Anyways I've needed some kinda mat to game on for awhile now, my black tablecloth with dragons while cool for D&D type gaming just doesn't work for "serious" tabletop wargaming.  : )
I have a green one I bought in the train section at the local Hobby Shop but the green stuff flakes off everywhere after just minimal play.  I've priced terrain mats on-line and they can be kinda pricey, Eli suggested I use fabric. I thought "cool".  Then promptly forgot about it, until today.  I immediately started searching and found...
Great thickness and a nice desert/dirt color...and as an added bonus it was in the cheapo remnant pile!
It was the perfect size for my table, without any cutting or measuring required!
Above and below are some of my painted up desert buildings I recently got from The Scene.
The light brown bikes are from RAFM's 15mm Sci Fi line. I believe they are now OOP.
Your probably thinking "eh no biggee", but I was happy to get this, it cost me just a few bucks, works fine for my  purposes and I got bonus points for going with my wife to the fabric store!
I've ordered the AE-Bounty rules and my buddy Boomer has agreed to help me try them out!
More to come...

Simian Saturday : Gorilla Minis!

To celebrate Simian Saturday I wanted to mention a new 15mm minis company that has just launched it's web site.    Pole Bitwy
The initial release of minis has a range of giant space apes.

Since apes are supposed to be bigger than us feeble human types they actually scale to about 25mm.  I believe there are plans to expand the ape range further. I can see these definately being useful for Mutant Future games, as well as, tabletop skrimish.

15mm Super Apes!

Well it's not Simian Saturday but I just saw over on the Four-Color-Figures Blog some greens for upcoming 15mm Super Apes!  Can't wait to get my hands on these! I still can't get over how the 15mm miniatures market has exploded over the past year or so!

Some of my painted 15mm minis

Sorry for the blurry picture, we haven't gotten a new camera yet, so I can't do close up minis pictures.  But you can at least tell that I'm slowly but surely getting my 15mm collection painted up.

Wow it's 2010 Already!!

 Happy New Year Everyone!
The family and I spent a quiet evening at home.  It was quite nice.  I've noticed on alot of the blogs I follow folks are reflecting on their 2009 gaming experiences and what they are shooting for in 2010.  Guess I'll do the same thing.
First off I started this blog back in the summer on a whim, and I've gotta say it was a great decision.  It took me a bit to "hit my stride" so to speak, but I'm having a ball with this blog.  You guys are great, I've "met" all kinds of people from all across the world (from Manila to Seattle and Beyond!..) , who like alot of the same things I do.  I am extremely flattered that so many of you have become readers of my blog, and I hope to keep your interest.  The friendships that I've made because of this blog have been a completely unexpected and most pleasant surprise and I look forward to getting to know more of you in the coming year.
As many of you probably know from reading my blog, my work schedule has really taken a toll on my face to face gaming opportunities, so this blog and especially you guys! have really helped to fill that void for me.  Unfortunately I don't see work easing up anytime soon, and on top of that I have learned that in order to keep my job, I have to go back to school for a bit (night school ...how exciting!).  Sooo that probably means even less time for gaming.
BUT its all good,  I consider myself blessed.  I have a wonderful wife and  a great life.  The next few months will be busy, but if all goes according to plan this time next year should see some good changes for me career-wise.
So that's enough rambling about real-life stuff...Let's talk about gaming!
In 2009 I finally got to play Mutants & Masterminds, we did a mini-campaign this past summer and had a blast!  I had wanted to  try it out since it first came out years ago.  Red did a great job running it and I really felt like I was in a Comic book story! In 2009 I discovered the coolness of 15mm Sci Fi.  So much awesome stuff is coming out for this or is already out.  I've got a growing collection in this great scale and as my budget permits, I'll be picking up more. I've even gotten several of them painted, will post pics when we get a new camera. The 15mm gaming community is an awesome bunch of folks, quite giving and friendly.
In 2009 I got to run a short Mutant Future campaign using the old Expedition to the Barrier Peaks module, the guys seemed to enjoy it, even if Red had a particularly nasty encounter with a laser scalpel weilding android (he talks in a higher pitched voice now, I mean his character does...) and Tod is publicly called "Ficus" from his mutant plant character to this day.. I tried 4E (DM'ed several sessions and played as a player in several more) and it just wasn't my bag, for those of you playing it I wish you the best.  But it's just not for me.  We've been playing Pathfinder, and I've had fun with it (especially the sessions I got to be Blackwolf the Barbarian, thanks Clint!) but it's got some of the same issues I had with 3.x to be honest. Lot's of rules!! I could duct-tape the rulebook to a club and would have one heck of a weapon for Mutant Future!  My work schedule has kept me from continueing in the Pathfinder game and that will probably continue to be an issue.  I got to try out Hackmaster Basic...hmmm didn't seem so "basic" to me, definately some cool stuff there, but I found character creation to be quite "fiddly" and the combat mechanic was...different from what I am used too. We got to play a Labyrinth Lord game using the old AD&D Saltmarsh module, Good Times, thanks for running Geek Preacher!  I miss that old school feeling that I get with LL and MF. I think I'm just going to have to admit that I'm a Grognard!  I've been caught up in the Old School Revival and I have been reading all the various blogs and sites about the OSR and such.
So what does 2010 hold for me gaming-wise?
                                          I hope to explore ....

And not be afraid to turn things on their head and ask..

and where there are

I'll continue to do Mutant Future stuff, that system is just too much fun for me to resist and hopefully I'll get to play it some more too.  I also want to try some different gaming experiences, Science Fantasy/Sci Fi (other than my brief MF game) is something I haven't gotten to explore enough.  Planet Algol is an exciting example of the king of gaming I'd like to do.  I want to be able to mix and match genres. With none of this "You can't do that!".."Why not?"...just because"....   I want to get chocolate in my peanut butter! or is that peanut butter in my chocolate?
So stick around who knows what might be lurking around the next corner!
Good Gaming!

No Pathfinder Sunday today.... : (

Well No Pathfinder Sunday today, at least not for me.. The guys got together and played, but unfortunately for me work reared its head.  I'm not complaining.  Alot of good folks are really struggling out there and I'm thankful to have a job. "They" claim the recession is over, so hopefully things will turn around soon for everyone.  To do my part for economic recovery and to treat myself since I missed today's game.  I placed a little order with Khurasan Miniatures.  Some cool 15mm minis will be on their way to me very soon.
I ordered some Garn, some Karkarines and some Felids. Gotta get ready for those 15mm Sci Fi Apes don't ya know!  In other 15mm news I found a blog I somehow missed before : Miniature Review it has some really helpful scale pictures comparing different minis and such. Well I'm gonna go crash now.
Good Gaming!

15mm Sci Fi Apes!!

Ok gang...Go over to the Dropship Horizon blog!.Then come back when your done.  It's ok I'll wait....tap...tap...tap. Your back? Great!  DID YOU SEE!! 15mm Sci Fi Apes! At last!  How cool is that?! They'll go perfect with Mutants and Death Ray Guns or Mutant Future or....yeah I'm a bit excited.  But Sci Fi Apes!!  Whoo Hoo!  So many cool 15mm Sci Fi minis are out or are coming out.  It's amazing to me how the 15mm Sci Fi market has changed in a year or so.  Not too long ago it was hard to find much of anything outside of GZG line (which is a great line), but I wanted variety, I wanted...APES!!
I'm still keeping my 28mm stuff, I've got too much time invested in those guys, being mostly fantasy that won't be an issue.  But for Sci Fi I'm 15mm all the way. When I got home after our last Pathfinder game, I was unpacking my stuff and noticed several of my Ral Partha nicely painted goblins were showing some wear and chipping (that's with several coats of sealant).  15mm will be much easier to take to the FLGS. + terrain will be much cheaper and easier to store and carry. While I'm plugging blogs. Check out D.C. 2150 some cool 15mm Post Apocalyptic stuff.  Well I'm gonna go dig through my unpainted 15mm pile now.  I gotta get some stuff painted up! The Mutie Wars are coming soon!!!

Song of Mutants and Death Ray Guns!

I wanted to mention for those of you who are into tabletop wargaming, Mutants and Death Ray Guns by Ganesha Games is a set of skirmish rules that is clearly inspired by Gamma World.  I had the privilege of "talking" with the game's designer Andrea while it was being developed and offered a few VERY minor comments here and there.  It is recommended for use with 15mm miniatures, and now that so many cool new 15mm sci fi minis are coming out, you may just want a rules set to use them with!  It's designed for small bands and the rules are very straightforward and easy to follow.
Good Gaming,

AE-Bounty

Here's the cover of the soon to be released Sci-Fi Skirmish miniatures game; AE-Bounty.  I've been keeping my eyes on this one, it looks pretty cool.  Darkson Designs is the company releasing it. They have a retro looking line of minis releasing with it, but you can also use your own minis.  It is mainly built for using 28mm minis, but I'm hoping it can scale with 15mm also.

15mm Madness!

Just messing around with my 15mm stuff. WIP on a Compound for the troops to fight over. I particularly like the Stonehenge feature. My wife found that at Barnes & Noble it scales perfectly for 15mm. Some of the painted miniatures are Rebel Minis (Bio Suit troops), Stan Johansen (Blarad & Dracons), RAFM Urchin Spiders, +others. I can't do closeups with this camera to show you scale stuff. Sorry.

My workstation

Just a shot of some of my current projects. Some 15mm's I'm fixing to #10 washers.
Sorry for the poor quality picture. I'm using my daughter's cheapo camera till I get a new one.

A bit of News...

First off I've really been enjoying blogging, I've "met" some great folks and have been having a ball. I've been reading the Pathfinder rules, and we are talking about starting up a Pathfinder Campaign soon. We should be wrapping up our 4E Campaign this Sunday. Unfortunately my camera has died so it will be a bit before I post any new pictures of my miniatures. I've got quite a few that my friend Boomer has painted for me that I need to get posted, but that will have to wait for a bit.
In other news, I have really been getting into the 15mm miniatures scene. For fantasy I'll stay with 28mm (I've just got too much invested to switch), but for Sci Fi 15mm is just too tempting to resist. Several key factors prompting this are cost, space, an ever growing variety in the 15mm market, ease of transport, oh and did I mention COST? Anyways I'm slowly building up an assortment of 15mm miniatures, even have alot of them painted (woo hoo!), what I'm trying to decide is if to post 15mm stuff on this blog or start up a new one totally devoted to 15mm sci fi gaming??
Thoughts?
