Lizz Wright pertenece a esa nueva generación de cantantes de Jazz que sin desdeñar las reglas de la ortodoxia jazzistica,se decantan por añadir una paleta de nuevos coloridos y matices,con claras influencias de Gospel,Blues,R&B,Soul,Country o incluso música Pop.

Nacida en Georgia a principios de 1980 en el seno de una familia claramente musical,el padre era pianista y director musical de la iglesia local y la madre era cantante de espirituales en la misma.Aprendió a tocar el piano a temprana edad y ya formo su primer grupo vocal con sus hermanos cuando era adolescente.

En el año 2000 se unió al cuarteto vocal In the Spirit con el que destaco,convirtiéndose en una de las mejores formaciones de Atlanta,tal merecimiento le llevo dos años después a firmar su contrato de debut con la Verve Records.
El disco que presentamos esta semana,Salt,fue su presentación como cantante solista,con la producción de Tommy Lipuma,Brian Blade y John Cowherd,con unos músicos de lo mejor de la elite jazzistica internacional entre los que cabe destacar Danilo Perez(tristemente solo en el tercer corte,Afro Blue).

En Salt podemos apreciar la delicada textura de la voz de Lizz Wright,asi como la memoria genética de sus influencias musicales.No siendo un disco exclusivamente jazzistico,es un disco de autor,personal e intimo y para mi el mejor que ha grabado esta cantante Georgiana,(en discos posteriores se nota un leve giro a la comercialidad)en el que los arreglos están pensados para realzar la voz y el status de cantante de Lizz.

Mis temas preferidos del disco(ardua tarea tener que elegir unos sobre otros)son:Open your eyes, you can fly,Blue rose y Afro blue,de este ultimo,archiconocido standard de Mongo Santamaria,solo había escuchado otra versión cantada,la de Abbey Lincoln,pero para ser honestos me gusta muchisimo mas la de Lizz Wright.
