Gaslands Refuelled

I have been suckered into ordering the new expanded edition of Gaslands, aptly titled Gaslands: Refuelled, partly due to some positive online reviews but mostly because I fancy some toy car kit bashing. I have the original rules and all the various templates but never played more than a couple of games, so I'm hoping this expanded version will fire me up to try some more. I've actually got a credit as a first edition play tester somewhere but it's hardly deserved!

One of my old Hot Wheels conversions

I ordered my copy from Northstar as it includes a bonus sprue of weapons, stowage and armour for conversions, which looks like it will be very useful. The plan will be to hi-jack a rainy weekend in the next couple of months to bash together some new post-apocalyptic, Mad Max style battlewagons, using a stockpile of Hot Wheels that I've salvaged from the kid's old toy box. Who knows, maybe it will get them unglued from the X-Box once they've realised what happened to the old toy cars?

Gaslands Auto Combat Terrain

I had forgotten about Gaslands until I spotted these card print and play accessories on Wargames Vault this morning, some of which were on special half price discount. I've downloaded the three sets of terrain designed for Hotwheels scale gaming, together with a couple of the scaleable sci-fi pieces including a control tower and cargo containers. All very useful as structures to crash into, drive over or otherwise blow up!

Unfortunately my printer isn't up to the job, so I'll have to wait to get these printed on card at the local printing shop, which may not happen for a while. This lot set me back about seven quid, which is pretty good considering that I can now print off as many terrain pieces as I want and in numerous different schemes. It will also save me ages scratch building the same bits and pieces out of plastic card and scrap stuff.

Ramshackle Conversion Pack

It's pay day so I have splashed out on a pack of 20mm conversion bits for diecast toy cars from Ramshackle Games. I'm not keen on the over sized 40K style guns but the drivers, ram plates, turrets and missile pods should be very useful.

Gaslands Gangs

I've been rummaging about for various 'stuff' to use as conversion material for diecast toy cars, so that I can put together a second 'gang' for Gaslands and Axles and Alloys. I already have half a dozen Hotwheels and Matchbox conversions, all of which are based on supercar or muscle car models rather than Mad Max style post-apocalyptic off road wrecks. The new 'gang' or team will be much more along those lines, using 50's style pick ups and coupes with loads of added stowage, armour and improvised rams, roll bars and spiky bits, along with some serious offensive weaponry. In the meantime, I'm going to practice dismantling and rebuilding an old Matchbox AMX Pro Stocker racing car into a Mad Max style interceptor.

Blotz Gas Station and Diner

I thought I'd invest in a small number of 20mm scale scenic features to tart up my desert terrain for use with Gaslands and other post-apocalyptic car combat games like Axles and Alloys II. There's not a lot out there in 20mm but this petrol station and diner looked like it would be suitable, once I bash it about a bit and paint it up as a derelict road side stop. I also bought some road block barriers to use by what's left of local law enforcement, so I've made a good start already.

Gaslands Bundle

I have now received the bundle of Gaslands rules, dice and templates that I ordered a while back, so will be flicking through the book over the next couple of days. The first impression is that a simple idea, driving around shooting things and crashing, seems to have been made quite complicated, although I'm sure a playtest will make more sense of the system.

It's definitely not as 'nuts and bolts' as Axles and Alloys II, which is what I've used before for post-apocalyptic car combat. I don't like the background blurb either but as that's entirely optional, I'll just ignore it. I need to give the rules a go at some point with my existing die cast conversions but now plan to make some more, if only to have a second 'gang' of road warriors to use as the opposition.

I even bought a new Hotwheels pick up in the local newsagent on the way to work this morning!

Gaslands is Go!

Here's one I made earlier!

The lady wife has been very nice and has allowed me to pre-order the Gaslands rules, counters, markers and dice bundle as an early Xmas present. It's not out until the end of the month anyway, so will be wrapped up when it arrives in suitably festive paper, although I will sneak a look beforehand. This means that some games are on the cards next year, especially as I already have some die-cast cars converted to use and plenty of desert scenery for them to drive through and blow up. I'll be adding to my modest collection of post-apocalyptic vehicles too, as I have a stash of suitable toys just waiting to be souped up into Mad Max style off road cars, trucks and bikes.

Gaslands Offer

I signed up to playtest these post-apocalypse car combat rules a couple of years ago but, due to the horrible meltdown at work and the resulting stress, I just didn't have the time. At the club, however, some of the chaps did do some playtesting and used the pre-release beta version of the rules for a successful participation game at Warfare this time last year. Anyway, to cut a long story short, they are now available as a pre-order special offer including some very nice templates, counters and dice:

Poundland Terrain Board Ideas

I bought a shed load of 30cm x 30cm x 5mm mdf squares from Poundland in their sale a few weeks ago, for the bargain price of 50p each. They have a couple of holes in them where the string was attached and a cheesy motto on the front but otherwise they're perfect as modular terrain boards. A fellow history teacher and keen wargamer, Mark Backhouse, the mastermind behind the excellent ECW Siege of Portsmouth show participation game, has already turned one of his into a prototype terrain board for 3mm games and it looks really, really good:

I plan to use mine for 1/600th scale stackable modular terrain for WW1 and modern air wargaming, with a section of the Western Front being the first idea. This would be used with Tumbling Dice aircraft and the Wings at War rules for the First World War, Duel of Aces. The other plan is to do some modern terrain for the Flashpoint Baltic Target Locked On! project. I'm sure there are many other uses that I could put them to as well including 3mm micro-armour terrain or 15mm off world sci-fi terrain, for example.

One idea that I had while doing the ironing this morning was to scale up the old Games Workshop board game Battlecars to 20mm and use converted Hot Wheels cars instead of the cardboard counters and game components. This is something I've long been thinking of doing but, now I have some mdf square terrain boards, it is now a feasible project rather than just an idea. As you can see, the boards would divide up into four adjacent 15cm x 15cm squares, with the diagonal lines used for movement and shooting, as in the original rules (I didn't quite get the marking up right but you get the idea).

I also thought about using 28mm figures and 1/43rd scale die cast cars but, as I already have some converted Matchbox scale post-apocalyptic vehicles, I might as well stick with 20mm. The terrain squares and dropped weapons templates would be made from laser cut mdf shapes, with structures, wreckage, trees and scrub modelled on top. I would probably cover the top of the boards with a layer of card or even sandpaper, as the mdf soaks up paint like a sponge, with the movement lines marked on in pen or paint.

Another idea would be to do a naval version of Battlecars, along the lines of that terrible film with what's his name in it, set in a post-apocalyptic Mad Max at sea setting. I have some of the super little 15mm swamp boats from The Scene, that I can use for this, as well as scratch building some craft out of bits and bobs. I could add terrain templates to represent rocks, shoals and islands as well as making some junk platforms for the boats to manoeuvre around. I think this would look great and it wouldn't be difficult to modify the rules to a nautical theme.

...all a bit theoretical so I'd better get back to the ironing!

Wessex Wargamers Winchester Warfare 2016 Game

This year I'm not involved in the club participation game for Warfare at the weekend, as I just have too much on my plate at work. However, I will be going to the show with No2 son on Saturday, so hope to join in and play a couple of games. The game this year is a car wars style automotive post-apocalypse race across the wastelands, using some of my diecast cars that I converted years ago for Axles and Alloys alongside other club member's vehicles. The rules are a streamlined version of Gaslands, which is currently in development for Osprey Publishing. It should be a fun game and I'm looking forward to being on the other side of the table for a change!

Copplestone Road Warrior

I had an email from Copplestone Castings today, to announce the switch over of the range to the North Star site and the closing of the Copplestone webshop. This included the news that North Star will be giving away a new sculpt of a Mad Max style road warrior figure by Mr C. in the near future, presumably along side a new set of post-apocalypse rules of some description? It's a superb figure, as you'd expect, so I will definitely be finding an excuse to order something from Nick at North Star as soon as it becomes available. There's a Post-Apocalypse variant of Fistful of Lead:Reloaded on the horizon too, so it looks like a great excuse to add just one more figure to the lead pile!

Red Planet Terrain Mat

I spotted this bargain today on TMP, a £10 discount offer on Deepcut Studios red planet terrain mats over at the Big Red Bat Cave web shop thingy. As it's Friday and I have had a very, very heavy week, I thought 'I could do with one of those!' and promptly bunged in an order. It works out at a little over £40 for a 6' x 4' mat including First Class postage, so a pretty good deal.

I'm not sure what I'll use it for but initial thoughts are for 15mm Sci Fi, which is one of my projects for this year, along with some Post Apocalypse Mad Max style games using 28mm Copplestone Future Wars figures and 1/43rd scale die-cast toy car conversions. I could also have a go at using it for Fistful of Lead: Reloaded, although it's probably a bit too extra-terrestrial to look quite right?

Post Apocalyse Big Rig

I've been looking for suitable die cast Hot Wheels toys to convert into post- apocalypse vehicles for Gaslands over the last couple of days. I already have some muscle cars that I've converted and painted but would like to have some more Mad Max style cars and trucks, complete with add on armour and spikey bits. Although I have already stockpiled a load of 50's style Hot Wheels for just such a thing, I have been struggling to find a suitable big rig truck and trailer, until now.
A trip to the local toy shop yesterday turned up this beast of a truck, complete with yet another hot rod car for the convoy escort. The conversion potential is obvious and I'm thinking of adding side armour sheets to the trailer for a start, together with some gun platforms or turrets. The cab with also get some add-on armour plating, a ram plate and some sort of forward firing heavy armament. I just need to get all the bits together and it's off to the chop shop for some welding!

Gaslands

I've signed up to playtest these post-apocalypse car combat rules which will be published by Osprey in 2017. The beta rules look very straightforward but I'm sure that there will be more layers added to the core mechanisms as they develop. I'm now off to the loft to dig out the dusty box of Hot Wheels muscle cars that I converted to use with Axles and Alloys way back when I last went for a spin. This looks like it will be a lot of fun and I can make use of my growing collection of wild west desert terrain to drive around in:

Mad Max Fury Road

I went to see this last night and was suitably impressed. It's a bit more fantasy than Mad Max 2, which is a better film I think, but the action is amazing and Tom Hardy isn't bad in the lead role. The various post-apoc cars and vehicles are brilliant, especially the spikey ones and the cars with the truck spearing harpoons. I'm tempted to bash together some cars and a war rig truck using my garage full of Hot Wheels now. I must resist the temptation though as I have plenty of other things to do!

Axles and Alloys II

I followed a link over on TMP and re-discovered the Axles and Alloys blog, complete with an updated set of the rules. I played a few games of this way back in 2010 against Jon at the club, with some diecast cars that we'd souped up into post-apocalytic carnage machines. I went for the muscle car sleek and dangerous look while Jon went for the rusty, grime encrusted chop shop option.

http://axlesalloys2.blogspot.co.uk/

The games were great fun and suitably bonkers, with ramming, spiking, exploding and blasting all over the place. I really enjoyed converting the toy cars and built up quite a stockpile of Hotwheels ready for bashing but then drifted off into other things. Now, with the updating of the rules and the inspiration from Mad Max: Fury Road, which I'm hoping to catch over the weekend, I quite fancy bashing up some more diecast death machines over the holidays!

The Scene 20% off!

This is a great source of various AK47 and post-apoc related 15mm bits and bobs that you never realised you needed. I can't recommend the stuff that this chap produces highly enough and, as you will know if you've had a chat with him at shows, he's a very nice bloke too. Anyway, here's his new webshop thingy, complete with all sorts of goodies to tempt you, with 20% off as an additional incentive:

Dark Future

As part of my 'play more games' approach this year, I've been looking out for boardgames that I can pick up and play with the kids and at the club. I've long had an interest in Mad Max style automotive mayhem, having been an avid Battlecars player in my mis-spent youth, and having established small collection of diecast Hotwheels conversions that I put together for Axles and Alloys a couple of years ago.

I've also been inspired by orlygg's excellent Route 666 blog, which is definately worth a look:

http://route666darkfuture.blogspot.co.uk/

This is a great example of wargame recycling, using an obsolete but perfectly good set of rules as a basis for the re-animation of long forgotten but once 'trendy' gaming systems. I really like this approach and have always tried to follow the same philosophy, with the Darkest Africa and Back of Beyond projects as good examples.

Why jump on the bandwagon while it's at full steam ahead, when you can climb on board at a leisurely and parsimonious pace, once it's been shunted into a rusty siding somewhere?

Anyway, I now have an almost mint condition Dark Future box set, complete with unpunched counters, weapons sprues, bikes and cars, all for not much more than twenty five quid. The cars are assembled but not glued together or painted, so can easily be pulled apart and rebuilt with added extras. I've also downloaded the free version of the rules and the White Line Fever supplement onto the Kindle Fire HD, giving me the opportunity to work through the rule manual in my spare time, whenever that is?

A bit of a result and a very promising project for the future, dark or otherwise.

Axles and Alloys Law Enforcement

I did the usual weekend shopping trip to Sainsburys today and spotted this diecast Transformers police car in the toy section for a quid. It doesn't transform (?) so no doubt didn't appeal to the sprogs and ended up in the bargain bin as a result. I'm going to give it a quick wash and paint up the windscreen but, other than that, it's perfect as a law enforcement interceptor.

Interstate 76

You may remember this old PC game from a long time ago when, like me, you had the time to waste playing hours of flight sims, driving games and first person shooters.

Anyway, I had one of those flashback funky five minutes today.

I reckon this would make an excellent Axles and Alloys scenario and/or campaign, although to be honest the exact details of the game are a bit sketchy. I was fairly useless at it as I didn't have a wheel and had to fall back on a mouse and keyboard but, nonetheless, it was a lot of fun and had an excellent storyline.

In gaming terms the possibilties for 1970's and 1980's diecast conversions are very cool. There are also some good storyline ideas to be developed into potential scenarios. There's also the retro funkiness of the whole thing, which would add some flavour to the proceedings.

Cool.
