This week's post on KEXP (and a show tonight!)

First, I just realized that this is the 950th post on SPB. That's a lot of rock!

Second, I forgot to mention that my weekly KEXP column, titled Rock n' Roll Pest Control was posted yesterday and focused on the band SHIM.

Third, as you can see in that post, SHIM is having a CD release party tonight. So, go get your rock on!

This week's post on KEXP blog

This week on the KEXP blog I focused on a newly-released powerpop book and the Seattle bands found therein.

My mailbox was a twitter this past weekend when I finally received my copy of the new book from Not Lame, titled Shake Some Action: The Ultimate Powerpop Guide (no immediate relation to the Seattle band of the same name, but no doubt inspired by the same Flamin’ Groovies tune). Aside from being a nice primer on powerpop for the newbie, the book is a nostalgic look back for long-time fans. Of particular interest to me, of course, were the Seattle-related entries, of which there were many.

You can read the rest of the post on the KEXP blog.

This week's post on KEXP blog

The third post in my new weekly column on the KEXP blog is now up. The column is titled Rock n' Roll Pest Control, named after the Young Fresh Fellows song of the same name. This week's post is dedicated to that band and that song.

Go see it here.

Top albums of 2007: Vote @ KEXP

KEXP is doing their annual listener-driven voting for best albums of the year. So, head over there to submit your list of faves. There were a lot of great powerpop records coming out of the PacNW this year. So, give 'em some love.

One thing that's cool on the site is you can start typing the band name, and it will give you a drop down list of albums to choose from. Neato.

I'm blogging for KEXP!

While it won't impact my ongoing blogging here at SPB (which, given, has been pretty thin the last few weeks!), I wanted to make an announcement that I'm now an official blogger for KEXP! My weekly blog series is titled Rock n' Roll Pest Control, after the great Young Fresh Fellows song.

The series will appear each Friday as part of their NW Fridays. The first one is up now, and it features The Sonics, The Tripwires and a few words about Synchronicitylive.com. Thanks to KEXP for adding me to the choir. Hopefully it will help spread the SPB gospel.

My KEXP experience

I just got home from my stint on KEXP's Audioasis. I'd like to send a big ol' shout out to Sharlese, who invited me to come on and spin some songs and talk music. I had fun on the show, and I'd do it again in a heartbeat.

I didn't get to play as many tracks as I had hoped, and I prepared for way more than I knew I'd have time for. I had 14 songs ready to roll, and I ended up playing seven. Here's the set:

The Small Change - "Downtown in a Restaurant"
Young Sportsmen - "Her Independent Feature"
The Boss Martians - "Oh, Angela"
The Pranks - "Modern Communication"
The Tripwires - "I Hear This Music"
The Green Pajamas - "She Turns Me On"
The Color Bars - "Id Incinerator"

If I had another half hour, I would have played tracks by Lund Bros, Model Photographer, The Capillaries, Steve Pearson and British Racing Green, Curtains For You, Tiny Volcano and Sorry. Maybe next time!

You can hear my time on the show via their website. Just go to the Streaming Archive and search for date and time - Sept 8, 7:00pm. It's not there as I'm posting this. But, I imagine it will be relatively soon.

Reminder: SPB on KEXP tonight

I wanted to stick a reminder up that I'll be the guest on KEXP's Audioasis tonight at 7pm. I'm not sure exactly how many songs I'm going to get to play, as we've got a half-hour slated for an interview and playing tunes. But, in any case, tune in or listen online and see if I can avoid making a fool of myself.

SPB on KEXP's Audioasis this Saturday

I've been invited to be a guest on KEXP's Audioasis program this Saturday, September 8. I'll be on from 7pm until 7:30pm, and they're letting me spin any band I so desire. Pretty cool, huh?

I'll be talking about local music and playing some cool stuff, likely including unreleased tracks by The Small Change and The Tripwires, as well as new stuff by The Color Bars, Young Sportsmen, British Racing Green and others.

So, tune in or listen online to hear me spreadin' the Seattle powerpop love.

Noise For The Needy does good

I just received a press release that gave the fundraising totals for the 2007 Noise For The Needy. Here's the blurb:

Annual music festival Noise for the Needy (NFTN) raised nearly $24,000 in operating support for local Seattle organization Rise n’ Shine. Rise n’ Shine provides emotional support programs, stability, advocacy, and AIDS education for children and teens affected by HIV and AIDS.

...

The NFTN festival ran from June 5 to 10, 2007 at Neumos, The Tractor Tavern, Chop Suey, The Comet Tavern, Nectar Lounge, Sunset Tavern, The Funhouse and The Baltic Room. Lineups included such bands as Okkervil River, Sera Cahoone, CSS, The Handsome Family, Common Market, The Cops, Head like a Kite, Tall Birds, Das Llamas, Grayskul, Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, The Lights, Thee Emergency, Key Note Speaker, and more.

Congratulations on your good work, NFTN. Any of you who missed your chance to support them back in June can now do so at the KEXP Barbeque on August 18, as they've been added as a featured nonprofit.
