Fontana Mix - Catwalk (Compact)

Interesting debut Fontana Mix throw a lot of odd shapes and angles, making for an extremely busy soundtrack. Unfortunately the vocals are flat and the melody is, how you say, lost. (Jim Reid, Record Mirror, May 28, 1983)

I suspect you have to see the video to make sense of this. I think there's a story in there among the nasal vocals and the Spanish guitar but the whole affair's so carefully contrived that I ended up checking the second hand on my watch to the drum beats instead of following the plot line. (Mark Cooper, No 1, June 11, 1983)

Mari Wilson - Just What I Always Wanted (Compact)

Pleasant but rather cardboard attempt to get the deeply marvellous Mari a hit, a process which is taking longer than expected. What Mari needs is a big song and an even bigger production. Something like "All Of My Heart" would be a start. Meanwhile, go and see her in concert. Fun for all the family. (David Hepworth, Smash Hits, September 2, 1982)

Mari Wilson - Ain't That Peculiar (Compact)

And a warm welcome back to the former Junior Dive Board Champion for the London Borough of Brent, now sporting a hairdo that looks not unlike the back end of a chicken in a strong cross-wind. In fact Mari both looks and sounds great on this frisky new version of a fearfully old song. A hit, I hope. (Dave Rimmer, Smash Hits, May 10, 1984)

You can't beat Marvin Gaye's original (although this is not a cash-in, as Motown will readily tell you), but Mari has a good old crack. It's terribly over-produced and Mari's voice isn't strong enough to carry the number off. (Simon Hills, Record Mirror, May 5, 1984)
