New Years Day......vomit!
So Steve got sick the night before Christmas Eve, with what we thought was food poisoning! So Christmas Eve he put himself together enough to go hang out over at my sister Wendy's for a while(I will do a post on that later!). We woke up early Christmas morning to an explosive diaper! Nice right! So We cleaned Hayden up, changed him out of his cute new Chritmas jams! And decided to go back to sleep for a little longer! We woke a little while later to Hayden throwing up all over our bed. I did not think too much of it, he had just finished a bottle and I assumed he maybe just ate too much! Well by about 8pm he started getting really cranky! I was trying to get get him to eat his dinner and he kept hitting the spoon away! I should have known then! (In my defense he was laughing about it though!) So I thought he was just really tired! I gave him a bath and as I was trying to suck out his nose (he had a cold and I really wanted him to be able to breath well so he could sleep, so I could sleep!!) the little stinker was fighting me and the sucker thing poked him! oops! So then he got really mad! And was screaming like crazy! So I go to pick him up and he covers us both in vomit!! So I hurried and gave him another bath and thought to myself maybe it was just because he was crying so hard! So I went and put Hayd to bed and he was asleep instantly! I thought NICE!! He was just really tired! So I go about my business of trying to clean up and go and check on him about 20 min later! As I do I see he has thrown up in his bed, and was still sound asleep! I thought ok maybe I can just clean it up with out turning all the lights on and waking him up! Upon further investigation I realize this is not going to happen! So into another bath! At this point my cute Steve who I have asked if he wanted the baby or the bed, is dry heaving, saying "I really don't do throw up Robs!" ( oh, well I love throw up so no big deal!! I will take care of it all! Ha, I think not!) So Steve opted to give Hayden a bath! We finaly get him back in bed and with in 15 min he was going for round 3! Ok so clearly putting him back in his bed is not an option! And every 20 min he starts heaving again! So we call Grams (Steve's mom) who is also a nurse, and she says just try to get him to drink something. So we are pretty unsuccessfully shoving Gatorade down his throat! And he continues to heave up anything that goes down anyway! Finally around 2am after going through almost all of our towels and blankets and pajamas (mine and his! some how it was every time I was holding him that he threw up!) He finally fell asleep! He woke up around 6 so thirsty, and I made the mistake of letting him drink the whole 4 oz bottle of water that we had been trying to get him to drink a few hours earlier! (No one told me you should only do like a tablespoon every 10 min! That would have been helpful information!) So he quickly upchucks all of that! Nice! And continues to throw up through out the morning. My sister Wendy said I should maybe call the doctors office and just let them know! So of course when they say well you better come in. So we drive out there in the nasty snow to see the on call doctor (due to the holidays)! He says well you need to get him hydrated in the next few hours or we may have to do an IV. So he sends us home with some pedilite popsicles! The whole way home we are kicking ourselves for going! I could have paid myself the 20 bucks and told me to get him hydrated! Anyway to make a long story short, Hayden continued to throw up and as the days went by he was drinking less and less. By saturday he still had not gotten much better and as the day wore on really would not drink anything. Around 7pm he started throwing up again, and the diarrhea kicked in. After talking with both our mom's and both my sisters (whom I had to hang up on multiple times to clean up some kind of mess!) we decided to call the after hours nurse and see if we needed to do something else. She said we really just needed to go to Primary Children's, that is where they would likely send us anyway. I really did not want to go to the ER! Neither Steve's mom or my mom are ones to rush and encourage us to run into the doctor/ER for most things so I figured if they both were saying we should go then we had better go. So Steve went to get the car ready and I was trying to grab a few things and get Hayden's coat on. Before I could even get out the door I had to change my clothes once and Hayden's twice! I finally decided he was just gonna have to go with a bad diaper or we would never leave! Poor little guy! So of course we get there and the Resident comes in and basically says he does not look too bad but I will have the Attending come check him out! (of course keep in mind he had fallen asleep in the car, so he had thrown up a bunch and taken a rest and woke up in a different place, so I think he briefly felt better) Both Steve and I were kicking ourselves worrying we had jumped the gun! In the hour we spent waiting for the Attending Hayden really kind of took a turn for the worse. He just Kind of crashed. We lucked out and got a great doctor. She said he needed an IV and they would check his labs and that he had an ear infection. So they put in his IV (which was really difficult for me to watch! The poor little guy gave every last ounce of fight he had left in him! He was so dehydrated he did not even have any tears! 2 nurses and Steve mostly held him down and I just held his good hand. He was just screaming looking at me with the most scared look! I may have gotten a little teary! but no one but Hayden saw! shh!!) As soon as he was hooked up he zonked! As it turned out his blood sugar had dropped to 43 (90 is normal) so they added some sugar water to his IV. They checked his blood sugar again a bit later and it had jumped to 140, which can happen right after getting the sugar water. When they tested it again it had dropped back down to 53. The Doctor said in order to go home Hayden had to be able to wake up and be "perky" and they had to see him drink something by mouth (it was about 3am). So we tried everything to get him to wake up! He just would go back to sleep sitting up! And he really would not drink! So the doctor said she just did not feel comfortable sending him home. So off we went to a room for the night!)
(his blood sugar finally went back to normal)
I have done more laundry, changed more clothes, bought more butt paste, and bought more yogurt then I care to think about! Weird thing is if someone would have told me a year ago this is how I would have spent the holidays I would have probably laughed or more likely cried! But no matter how many times this little guy throws up on my NEW white, christmas cozy pants, he is still the best thing I have done with my life! (I was feeling a touch sorry for myself one day after cleaning up like the 20th round of throw up and I had an Oprah on, there was this mom who had lost her 2yr old son and her husband in a small plane crash while celebrating the little boys b-day that had chosen to make the best of their deaths. Needless to say I felt like crap! A little flu is really not such a big deal in the grand scheme of things!) Anyway I am glad to have gone a few days with no vomit and that everything turned out to be fine! So happy stink'n holidays to everyone! :) he he he!
