ADS Audio-Visual Productions

One of the earliest Audio-Visual Productions
from 1965

One of the most prolific producer of public service spots (video cassettes and records) was Audio-Visual Productions located in the Washington D.C. area (in Fairfax, Virginia) and presided by Art Stamler from 1962 to 1985.

Dr. Arthur (Art) Donald Stamler

Dr. Stamler began his career in broadcasting in 1952 when he joined the staff of WBUR, Boston University's FM station, as a student. He then joined WXKS in Boston as News Director.

In 1955, Dr. Stamler first entered management as General Manager of WGUY in Bangor, ME. He served two years with the United States Army and several years in the Army Reserve as a Radio Broadcast Officer. He went back to management briefly with WFAX, a Washington, DC-area station, and then took ownership of another DC-area station, WOHN. From 1962 to 1985, he was President and Executive Producer of Ads Audiovisual Productions, the nation's largest producer of public service spots for radio and television, located in Fairfax, Virginia.

The Immortals (Richmond, Virginia)

The Immortals
Kilmarnock, Virginia
Telephone 435-1666

21063 - You Went Your Way (Lawson-Wray)
21064 - Like I Love You Lawson-Wray)

RSSW0969M
Custom produced by Richmond sound stages
2314 W. Cary Street Richmond, Virginia
1968

The Immortals began in the fall of 1966 at York Academy in Shacklefords, VA. , Jack Wray (lead guitar), Jack Lawson (bass guitar & lead vocals), Richard Cowles (drums), and Bruce Dawson (rhythm guitar) came together as a rock group not unlike millions of other teenage boys after the British Invasion in 1964.

They were ages 13-15 as they began this musical relationship that has spanned more than forty-five years

"Your Went Your Way” was recorded in December, 1967 at Richmond Sound Stages.  The production director and engineer's name there from 1965-1973 was Frank Brooks.  He also had a Jazz radio program on AM radio in Richmond during the 60s.  Although we’re not positive, he was more than likely the guy who engineered The Immortals record.  He was also probably the guy who engineered such contemporary efforts as  Why Did You Leave Me by The Klansmen and Lord I Need You  by Ray (Pittman) & the Soul Beats.

Info above from the oficial Immortals website here

The Mystics on Future Talent

The Mystics

13893 ~ Ooh Poo Pah Doo
J.Hill, Minit Music Co.

13894 ~ Snoopy
C.Jim, Marve-N-Harve Music Pub. Co.

A Rose-Givens-Masan Production

FUTURE TALENT RECORDS
Box 469, Waverly, Virginia
Division of Talent Music Ent..

February 1965

This was issued previously on the Black Cat label in 1964.  The Mystics were from Tallahassee, Florida.   They had a further 45 on Orchid as by Many Others  : "(Tell Me Why) I'm Alone  / Can I Get A Witness".

The Black Cat issue has no producer credited while the second issue on Future Talent credit three producers : Rose, Givens and Masan.

"Snoopy" is a reinterpretation of The Vibrations R&B hit "My Girl Sloopy" (Atlantic Records, April 1964).   Songwriter credit was changed to C. Jim and assigned to Marve-N-Harve Music Pub. Co.  It was perhaps intentional so it could be credited as an original composition or perhaps simply a mistake (?) :  Marve-N-Harve Music was the exclusive publishing arm of Mida Records*, a Miami label, for which Curley Jim recorded "Sloppy Susie", a title only slighly similar.   But in 1964 the label was no more.
(*) Mida Records was owned by hillbilly singer  "Uncle Harve" (Harve Spivey) and by Johnny Lomelo, first manager of Sam & Dave, owner of the King Of Hearts Club and.a good friend of mobster Dick Cami,

It's rumored that "Snoopy" by The Mystics was a minor hit in Akron, Ohio where the McCoys heard it and recorded the tune (as "Hang On Sloopy"), turning it into a big commercial success.

★

Prewitt Rose [Rose, one of the three producers] was only 19-year old when in October 1960,  he produced Ral Donner's "Girl Of My Best Friend" along with three other tracks, at The Fox Talent studio in Orlando. Co-producer Jan Hutchins managed to place the record with George Goldner's Gone label in New York City and the result was a #19 hit in the spring of 1961.

Prewitt Rose produced many groups and artists, including Pat Boone, The Sunday Funnies, Mike Smith, Mouse and the Traps, Randy Starr, Smith and Morales, Purvis Pickett, The Rats, The Mystics, Randy Ream, and even porn actress Hyapatia Lee.   He also owned several record labels, including Orchid of Memphis, Black Orchid, SRO, Sitting Bull, Smudge, as well as Pocket Money Productions.

28649  — Roof Boltin' Daddy
28650 — They'll Never Land a Man on the Sun

Gene Carpenter/Grayson Music

Dag Gone Records
(Grayson County, Virginia)

1971

Gene Carpenter (1910-1999) was born in Allegeny County, North Carolina, and lived in Grayson County, Virginia.  He worked as a roof bolter in a West Virginia underground mine.

Carpenter uses miner terminology and an unmasked dialect for he intended this to be heard in his own community among other miners..  This song (Roof Boltin' Daddy) originated close the song's subject matter, Carpenter really did bolt the roof in the mineshafts and had pride, a deep connection to his work.. His songs would have retained deep meaning within the camps and it was not expected to become popular within other demographics'
From "Lusty Air from Ailing Lungs : Coal Mining Songs in Appalachia"

The Digital Library of Appalachia has preserved several Gene Carpenter interviews (and singings). MP3 available HERE.

Brother James Edward Hunt was one of the founding Trustees of the Mount Nebo Pentecostal Church at its current location on Burke Avenue in Alexandria, Virginia. He remained a member for over forty years until his homegoing.

As a young boy, he discovered he had a gift from God as a dynamic gospel singer. He used this gift for many years singing in different churches until he and some friends formed their first successful gospel quartet called the Silver Stars.

In 1960 he and a new group of friends formed the Mighty Spiritual Lights. He became one of the lead singers and manager of the group which made several recordings and received accolades and praise from all over the country. The Mighty Spiritual Lights have shared the spotlight with many of the gospel greats of the world. With his ability to bring thousands of people to Christ through song he established the original “Gospel Hour” at Mount Nebo which became the showplace for many of the major Gospel singing groups in the area. The Gospel Hour is still in existence today.
