Back to Blogging 2025

Hi all, Merry Christmas from Sweden.

Sorry for the long long break but I had been posting over on Twitter now X or whatever. Unfortunately X is not what it used to be so I am coming back here to continue the blog. Now I have been doing a lot of painting and some playing over the last 3 years or so. The one good thing from being on X was meeting new people who also play miniature war gaming that live near my side of Stockholm which has let to more and different games.

So what I plan to do is get you caught up on my painting and miniature game playing over the last few years.

First up is September 2022.

I have some pictures of the only Korean Turtle ship that I painted up. It is from the Imjin War between Korea and the Japanese. I have actually been on a scale replica of this type of ship when I was stationed in South Korea way back in the day. So here are the pictures.

A you may know I have a lot of interests in history and I have to admit I get a little off track from time to time on what I should be working on but that's life. I am going to try to make a plan for my 2026 Historical Miniature Wargaming goals before the New Year Starts. I will be co-umpiring a 5 table 8 player game of Snappy Nappy in a few days so you might see some pictures from that game soon.

Take care and have a Merry Christmas.

Swedish Scanian War Fleet Additions!

Good Sunday afternoon to everyone.

Today I finished up 3 more ships for the Scanian War naval battles that Soren and I play at the club. I already have 4 ships done for the Swedish 3rd Division which fought at a number of important battles. My goal is to paint one for one the 3rd Division so I have about 4 more ships to finish meet that goal.

So here are the 3 new additions to the 3rd Division.

The first ship is the Solen, she is a 54 gun armed merchant.

Next is the Gripen she is a small ship but she has a total of 8 guns.

The last new ship is the Sjöman she also is a small ship with 8 guns.

All these miniatures are 1:1200 scale ships from Langton Miniatures, these are from there Anglo Dutch War ships.  The Miniatures are very detailed and a joy to paint up.

I hope you enjoy seeing the newest additions to my Scanian War project. Have a good week. I will have another post up soon!

One reason I do not paint as much as I want.

So I have played Wargames in a number of forms. While I have not been able to play and or paint many of the Miniatures and Miniature wargames I would want I have been messing around with a few computer games.

One that I will talk about now is contently being updated and improved. Rule the Waves, is a great game and it allows you to chose a nation, or create a nation and be the Secretary of the Navy.

You design and deploy ships all around the world and you wage war against other nations while trying to work within a ever changing budget and political situations that are unique to each nation.

I tried out a custom nation, a hypothetical Sweden that consisted of Norway, Sweden, Finland, The Gold Coast and the Virgin Islands.  This custom nation was created by a person named Skold and his mod can be found on the Rule the Waves forum, along with other custom nations. The game started in 1900 with a small fleet of old ships and a small budget. I fought a short war against Italy and did not win any territory. I later fought a War against Austria and I did well. I was able to win Ireland as part of the terms to end the war.

The views are not very flashy but it is very deep and you can research a lot of different technical advances which allow you to build bigger and more powerful ships.

Here is the Swedish Fleet at the end of the Game. I started the game with a small fleet option which limits the number of ships you can make over time. Next time I will chose the large fleet option.

The game is a lot of fun, you can check out YouTube to see what the game looks like live as there are a number of videos to help people navigate this deep game.

Well if you have any questions or comments please leave me a message below.

Thanks for stopping by!

Finishing up the US Battleship Division Nine of the Atlantic Fleet from WWI

Hi everyone.

I am surprised I was able to paint with the news of yesterdays attack in Paris. I think it was the only thing that I could do to take my mind off the events of yesterday.

So I have finished up three more GHQ Ships for the WWI Period of Naval History.

The ships are:

USS Delaware
USS Florida

USS Wyoming

The three new ships

These new additions along with the USS New York, which I painted last year will make up the historic Battleship Division Nine of the US Atlantic Fleet.  This squadron was sent to assist the British in late 1917.  The four ships served with the Royal Navy as the Sixth Battle Squadron of the British Royal Navy.

The Complete Battleship Division ready for action

Top down view of the ships

I hope you can take some time and look on line to get more details on each of the ships if you are interested.

These ships should be making an appearance at gaming convention in the near future. Details are to follow.

Be safe and try to have a safe weekend!

More Ships for the Scanian War!

Hi everyone!

Well I started on these ships last week but it took some time to get them all done. First up are the Ships Boats, these are the row boats from the larger ships and are used to tow ships as well as transfer crew to a ship that has struck her colors.

Row for your lives!!!!

Size comparison between the ships boats and one of the new 30 gun ships

They can also be used to send landing parties ashore. We needed some ship boats for our games to help us play better.  I also have some ships boats that are sail boats that I have not painted up yet.

Next up are two smaller ships of the line, they are both 30 gun ship models and they will represent the Swedish ships Hjorten (36 guns) and the Salvator (30 guns).

My little fleet of Swedish ships continues to grow. Next up I have two small Royal Yachts that will represent two smaller ships of the line.

Here are some picutes of all the ships I have now.

Thanks and have a great weekend!!!!

Scanian War Naval Battle AAR

Hi all!
Yesterday Soren (over at Black Powder Games) and I played a game of Form Line of Battle with our ships for the Scanian War.

Things got hot in this battle!

We both had 3 ships each, Soren commanded the Danish squadron consisting of: The Flag ship Christianus V (85 guns), Churprindsen (74 guns) and Christianus IV (58 guns).

From front to back: Danish ships Christianus V, Churprindsen, and Christianus IV

I commanded the Swedish squadron consisting of : The flag ship Kronan (110 guns), The Nyckeln (84 guns), and the Armarant (52 guns).

From left to right: Swedish Ships Kronan, Nyckeln and Armarnat
This game we assigned a flag ship and assigned an Admiral to the flagship.  Each Admiral has his own ratting and the Danish had a Superior Admiral and the Swedish had an Average Admiral rating, Which I think worked out well.

The set up at the beginning of the game

The game started off with the two of us setting up the scenario and who had the strategic advantage, which fell to the Danish. This allowed Soren to set up his fleet after I had set up mine and he had the weather gauge in his favor.  This means he was able to direct the direction and flow of the battle.

The first shots fired by Christianus V at the Kronan

Soren was able to maneuver into position to get off the first shots that were at long range at the Kronan.

The first shots of the game
The long rang shots from the Danish squadron fell short and Soren started to maneuver his ships to get close to me, where I was trying to keep my distance and use the advantage of having the Swedish "Death Star" the new name for the Kronan!

The first shots fall short of the target
Well I took the opportunity to turn and fire at the Christianus V with Kronan and my first shot hit home and started to wear down the broadside factor of the Christianus V.  I will do a break down of the starting hull, crew and broadside factors and the damage each ship took at the end of the AAR. You will see that the Kronan did very well for herself, probably better than the real ship. At least she survived the game and did not self destruct like the real ship.

The Kronan scratching the paint on the Danish ship Christianus V

Kronan firing here full broadside!
The game contained with all ships getting into the fight and firing at long, then medium and then finally short range.  Soren soon found out that it was going to be hard to take down the Kronan. He started to be more aggressive and started to get in close to try to board the Kronan.

The Danish Squadron dealing death on the Swedish ships

Sometime the shots hit and sometime they missed

The fight was very good and Soren tried to board the Kronan with the each of his ships. each attempt failed, which is good because at one point Soren was very close to boarding the Kronan with two ships and if he had been able to board with those two ships I do not think the Kronan would have been able to win the combat.

The Nyckeln takes a critical hit and loses her fore mast
Soren was able to do some heavy damage to the Swedish Nyckeln who lost a mast early in the game due to a critical hit when she was hit by a full broadside fired from the Churprindsen. This was the first time a critical hit had been scored in our two games. So it was fun going though the process of figuring out the damage received by the critical hit.

The Danish making a run for the Swedish Squadron

The battle rages as the range gets shorter

The Swedish ships score hits as well as the Danish

The Nyckeln scoring a hit on the Churprindsen

Another devastating hit on the Nyckeln, she is now on fire!
Later on as we continued to pound away at each others ships the Nykeln again is hit by a salvo and gets a critical hit which starts a fire! Fire on a wood ship loaded with gun powder is bad!!! Luckily the crew was able to put the fire out fast!

We are at close range here and the Nyckeln was able to put out the fire

The first boarding attempt by the Danish, Christianus V tries to board the Kronan, which fails

After the boarding attempt Soren's and my line of battle fell apart and the fight became ship on ship. A lot of damage was dealt out to ships of both sides. We did have a boarding action between the Nyckeln and Christianus V.  During this boarding action we ran into our first issue with the rules and I will be writing the authors of the rules for a clarification on how to to settle the issue we had.  Basically the result of the boarding action is that I was able to defend the Nyckeln and repel the boarders with both of our ships losing crew parties to the point we had just the number of crew to run the ship and man the guns. Both ships cut free and started to sail away in a hail of gun fire!

A view of the fight from above

The flag ships sail past after the failed boarding attempt

The start of the one boarding action that took place!
Stern rake on the Kronan did little damage from the smaller Churprindsen
Soren continued to try to disable the Kronan and was able to manuver to get in some very good shots but the difference in size of the ships and the reduced broadside factors on the Danish ships did little damage.

The battle lines are gone and the fight becomes ship on ship

The Danish fleet was doing OK the Christianus V had taken a lot of damage and was almost to the point that she would not be able to fire anymore. The Churprindsen had taken some damage but she was not at full strength and would not be able to take on the Death Star alone.  Christianus IV was in good shape but again she was a smaller ship and the her ability to defeat the Kronan was limited.

Point blank range!!

Lots of smoke!! I can smell the gun powder!!!

At this point we called the game due to time, we had planned to play two battles but we only had time for one since we had more ships and more unique events take place.  We called the battle a tie but that is to be debated. Ships on both side were severely damaged and will need a lot of repair while other ships were in good condition.

Holy Smoke!!!

In close and personal!!!

Please check out the charts below for a breakdown of the starting condition of each ship and the damage taken.

Who do you think won???
