Beats Electronics

See All Stories

Beats Electronics was created in 2006 by Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine. They focused on premium speakers and headphones. In 2011, it was estimated they had over 60% of the $100+ speaker market. On August 1, 2014, Apple acquired the company for $3 billion in cash and stock. It was the largest acquisition in Apple’s history.

After being acquired by Apple, Beats Music (a Spotify competitor) was shut down and many of its features found their way into Apple Music. Apple continues to release products under the brand today.

Beats has the official Apple cable for CarPlay with USB-C iPhones

When Apple moved the iPhone to USB-C, it left behind more than just the Lightning port. New iPhone comes with a USB-C charging cable, but many cars still use USB-A ports for CarPlay. That’s created an annoying gap for drivers: no first-party cable to connect a USB-C iPhone to a USB-A car.

Apple’s official workaround is a $29 USB-C to Lightning adapter. Beats, an Apple brand, offers this USB-A to USB-C cable for half the price that is effectively the official solution for using CarPlay with USB-C iPhones.

Beats debuts two new colors for its best-selling Beats Pill speaker

Apple’s Beats brand brought the iconic Beats Pill back from the dead last summer. Now, the company is refreshing the lineup with two new colors for Beats Pill shoppers: Navy Blue and Blush Pink.

Another interesting tidbit from today’s announcement from Beats is that the new Beats Pill is its best-selling speaker. The company says that Beats sold more Beats Pill (2024) units in the first nine months since launch compared to all past Beats Pill launches.

Apple is doing something very fascinating with its Beats brand

Apple acquired Beats back in 2014, and it’s certainly been interesting to watch Apple’s varying decisions over the years. For the most part, the Beats brand has stayed completely intact. Beats Music was replaced with Apple Music, and the Beats 1 radio station on Apple Music was subsequently rebranded.

Obviously, Apple has continued to release new Beats headphones over the years. More recently, though, Apple has begun to do something very fascinating. It’s now positioning Beats as an accessory brand.
