Story Time Again.... with "Slugs"...

                                     You folk may know how much I HATE Slugs.....

Slugs

 I just finished watching (for the first time since I saw it in the late 80's...) the movie "Slugs". Thanks to my friend Alex.... I loved the town "blowing up" at the end....  These nasty little vermin begin feeding on the townsfolk ...and infecting the people with a blood fluke ( a parasite that is common to the blood stream of Slugs but can be fatal to humans)... which are found squirming in the remaining flesh of their victims ... a bloody disgusting movie....  Over the last week I have learned more about these slimy little bastards than I ever wanted to know....

Slugs

 Slugs as I was "researching" them and methods of their Destruction.... Salt ... we all know that one.... But Salt is harmful to plants too...

 

 They recommend the planting of as many "red-leaved" plants as a barrier as possible and using Pine Needles (which are "acidic" ) which the Slugs do Not like to come into contact with .... Sand ... Which rips open their bellies and they Die...Sharp "water-absorbant" stone (or clay) chips which not only can slice open their Bodies... but also causes "Desiccation" as it absorbs their Moisture from them... Coffee grounds and egg shells are also recommended as a barrier   A more costly method ( but very effective) are strips of copper Which reacts "electrostatically" with their "slime"...

 Some methods of causing their Death are Ammonia ( 1 part to 6 parts water) spray and they Die....(Note: this watered down mixture does not "burn" your plants)   

 ... And the use of Cornmeal , which they are attracted to and love to eat ...

  and they Die after eating it  ....( place in a jar 2 tablespoons of Cornmeal and lay it on its side)   

Note: the Cornmeal will attract many of them to the bait... Check area at night .. and gather them up for disposal....

Pumpkin Patch... "Jack"

A bane has come upon my Harvest...    Slugs.... They have eaten a hole in "Jack" (may have to carve him early too...) I guess I will place blankets upon my bedroom floor  and set my harvested pumpkins in my room until late October to prevent more damage upon them by these Slimy vermin..... Over the colder months I will destroy these things .. including  Much Poisoning of their lairs....( Note: the sand does well at keeping the Slugs away from my Pumpkins ... But... I need "fine" sand for the smaller Slugs , for they will cross the areas of "course" sand , where-as the larger ones will not cross even the "course" sands...)
