AHPC11: The Obliette: 6mm AWI British

One of my personal goals in this year's AHPC is to paint up as much 6mm as possible, in a variety of era's and settings.

Because I have a lot of the little guys, and I find that the AHPC isn't a good project finisher per se, but it is a great project starter as you navigate the challenge map.

To that end, I began at last on painting some of my AWI british by Baccus Miniatures which have been lying around here for 7 years now, and did a few odds and ends to have a good starting point and idea of colourschemes and all.

This small kick off force as such consists of 3 stands of infantry numbering 16 soldiers each, 3 stands of 3 dragoons, two mounted officer stands and a cannon.

All in all, accumulating into 52 infantry models, 13 cavalry models and a man-handled gun, good for 40 points in the challenge and 20 bonus points, totalling 60 as such.

Review: Baccus6mm ACW Union Army Pack, Eastern Theatre

For use in Altar of Freedom, I finally decided to start building my 6mm Union army in earnest, and ordered the Eastern Theatre Union army from Baccus6mm a while ago.

And in today's post, I`m looking at all the different units of the force, including the flags I ordered seperatly from them as well for the force.

They carry two army packs for the Union on the site, and Eastern and a Western theatre variant, but being the defensive playing lover of artillery that I am, the Eastern one was my top pick as it contains some more cannons compared to an extra infantry unit for the Western variant.

The army set is divided in 4 zip lock bags, all containing some different units.  So let's go by those bags one by one, and see what is included in them...

The first bag contains the cavalry, both mounted (2 strips) and dismounted (5 strips).  This is quite okay, as the ACW wasn't a grand charge war, but one of infantry line versus infantry line, with the cavalry generally used for scouting duties until the infantry arrived.

It also has some horse handlers and all for the dismounted cavalry, and some officers.

The second bag is the main thing: rank upon rank of infantry.  Now, I will be building my force aiming at Altar of Freedom, so the 8 stands of infantry standard bearers are going to be the central core.  On a 60 by 40mm base, that means they will be joined by 5 regular infantry stands each, meaning I'll have enough in the army set, and still get a single strip left over, as well as 10 strips of skirmishers to base seperatly for scouts and such.

The third bag contains the zoauves, good for 2 stands, but the one thing I like about them is that there is only a single flagpole on the command strips, not the two as was typical for the Union.  Again, some models in skirmish formation are also included in this set.

The final bag brings the artillery, good for 10 cannons, as well as all the generals and guidons for the force.

It is a nice set for the 40 odd pounds it costs, but unfortunatly for now I will not be expanding on them just yet until the whole brexit affair has settled and it is better known how ,uch surcharge I would be paying on future orders.  Because I do want my 6mm fix in 2021 as well you know ;-)

But for now, I'll have a good selection to start glueing and painting up, as these are once again nice and crisp castings as I have come to expect from Baccus, who is still a top of the line manufacturer for me in this scale!

Now, to build that Union force and give Altar of Freedom a go once my club is allowed to reopen...

Review: Baccus6mm Dacian models

Hello all, this time a review of the Dacian line from Baccus6mm, the models which can be found under "the Romans" tab of their website HERE.

I ordered the models a short while ago, with the intention of making them into my army for DBA 3.0, a game I neglected to try out for far to long.

To that end, I ordered one each of the packs of the line, except for the allied in Bastarnae Falx, as a single pack of everything else should allow me to cover all the armies elements, and draw the general from the remainder of strips to make a base for him as well.

The plan is to replace every "figure" on a base with a strip instead to show the smaller scale, bigger army effect, and the Dacians being list II/52 will look like this initially:

1 element General
6 elements Warriors (3 Wb)

2 elements Falxmen (3 Bd)

2 elements Psiloi (Ps)

1 element Horsemen (LH or Cv)

This nets me the 12 necessary stands, and to give an example, all the warriors would be in 15mm needing 6 times 3 figures, whom I`ll be making 6 times 3 strips.  And a Dacian warrior pack contains 24 strips so that will even leave me with some extra figures.

Now to base all the needed models up, and of course paint them :-)

Unboxing my Baccus6mm Order

So it arrived, a nice order from Baccus6mm to feed my 6mil needs.

Now, during the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, Baccus's webstore got completely swamped to the level they needed to temporarily close the cart in order to catch up on casting with reduced capabilities.

Fast forward a few weeks, and Peter could re-opened the cart, only to be forced to shut it down again after a day.  But in that window, I managed to get my order in.

I ordered two armies to be painting up in the coming weeks and months, the first being this Eastern Theatre army pack for the ACW, containing all the needed models to get me going in Altar of Freedom.

The other army are Dacians, old enemies of Rome whom will be based to be suited for DBA 3.0, but instead of a single figure per base, I`ll be doing a single strip as a figure.  So a 3 model warriors unit will as such contain 3 strips of models instead of just 3 models, to make it look more as a big army.

No idea yet though what I`ll be doing for the encampment and general element, I`ll probably look around for something suitable to print for that...

Over the coming weeks I`ll do some small reviews as well on all the different units and packs in this order, so stay tuned!

Polemos English Civil War (2nd edition)

The English Civil War, or ECW, always has had an appeal to me ever since I started gaming with historical intrests.

I always say when they ask me my favorite period, the "era between the two civil wars, namely the English and the American ones".

There just is something about those ranks of muskets marching on the table that catches my fancy, the at times sheer amateurism of commanders, and literally at times a regiment drawn from the local pub or hamlet.

And as such, this ruleset by Baccus was actually my first set of the Polemos series that I obtained recently, never having tried the rulessystem before, so let's have a look at them and see if I "get" them.

The first part of the book handles the "generics" like how to base your models (60x30 as is seemingly the most common way in Polemos systems I have been told), troop types and qualities, how to identify and brigade your units (a single base is a unit, and there are pointers on how to base pike and shotte intermixed for ease of indetification) all up to how to deploy armies.

Then we move to the actual rules of the gamesystem, which is based around a system of "Tempo Bidding" to see who grabs initiative, and what one can still do in that turn with his units and brigades.  Not everything will be able to activate, so one must choose wisely.

Movement itself is expressed in "Base Width's or BW), which means in general 6cm normally, and 12cm in march column for most infantry, and double that for cavalry.  As you can see, these short movement ranges make the game actually suited to be played on a small or normal size table, and still give the impression of large crossed distances and grand manouevers.  Especially as they are doubled as long as they end the move outside 4BW of known enemies.  As usual in most rulesets, changing formations and terrain has an influence on the move rates.

Ranged Combat was nothing to write home about in the ECW, as muskets where fairly new technology in those days, and the rate of fire was poor, as was the range.  Now, charges are also resolved in this phase, to represent the fire at the moving troops closing in on them.
Ranges themselves are pretty short, again to represent the era, with short range being 3cm and maximum range being a measly 6 cm aka a BW.  Players then crossreference their Offensive and Defensive base value on a table, and add a d6 to it as well as some other modifiers to get the combat result.

Close Combat follows the same procedure, although with a different table, as Ranged Combat, and the results might be just that bit bloodier due to multiple units being in combat with each other.

Army Morale, the next section, is of course the decider of victory or defeat, asthe army starts to fall apart as bases are removed from the game.

The third part of the rules cover Terrain, as well as Optional Rules.  The terrain itself is split up in either Area terrain like woods and settlements, or Linear like rivers, all of whom affect the movement rules.  A handy terrain generator is included to roll for the layout of your table for those random battles.
In the optional rules we also find things like Defensive points, Ammunition Supplies and a heap of other stuff to add an extra layer of detailing to your games.

The fourth part is, from what I have been told, the bread and butter of Polemos gamerules: the Army Generators.  These allow you to first generate the number of brigades in each arm of the army, depending on the year.  A second roll then decides the morale, strength and either armament (for foot) or tactics (for horse) of your troops.  The generators also include the Polemos equivqlents of the historical forces present, to give you a good start on what force to assemble and paint.  Something I'll be definitly looking towards when I start an army soonish.

The final part of the rules brings about the scenario's, as well as some information of the ECW and the Designer's Notes, and includes some lovely colour pictures of painted Baccus armies in the field.

A great looking book, and the rules don't seem to complicated for an old fart like me.  I will definitly be building and ECW army in the future (after first completing so many more other projects for the scale), and then I'll see if I can find an opponent / convince one or more of my posse to start the period as well...

Now to only pick a side...

Regiments de Clare and Aunis

And so it comes that I completed the last two bases of the Wars of the Sun King pack I ordered for the AHPC.

The final two bases of Musketeers, and to be honest, I got quit hooked on painting them, in that I will be expanding the force over the coming months and, probably more likely, years.

These two regiments are the Regiment de Clare, which was present at the battle against the League of Augsburg, and consisted of irish volunteers.  It was an auxilliary regiment reduced to batallion size after the treaty of Limerick.

I also admit I made a boo-boo, because I switched banners around.  These are the actual banners of the Piemont regiment I did a while ago, and send them into the world keeping aloft the Clare banners, mea culpa.  I misread the Baccus flagsheets, thinking it was a up towards down listing instead of a left to right one... which would have been to obvious with three names and three flags for each line x-D

The second base is the Regiment de Aunis, part of what would later become the Languedoc regiment.

I really enjoyed creating these little regiments, and with my next order at Baccus 6mm I will be ordering some more packs to expand on them and make them three base units each for starters.

This is also what I love about 6mil, I now only painted up a single pack of models, good for 4 bases (aka units) yet they already start to look like a very solid battleline as they number 96 models now.

AHPC10: Rousell's Sandhill: Regiment 1er Picardie

And so I arrive at the last obstacle on the Path of the New Shiney, the Sandhill of Rousell.

For this hobby challenge, one needs to paint up a model with an unformed tricorne... I went for two dozen of them.

As part of my reformation to the scale of 6mm for home games, I bought these 6mm Baccus musketeers for the "Wars of the Sun King" era of gaming, and they are just perfect for this challenge project.  All unformed tricornes as far as the eye can see!  Okay, well, perhaps that is exaggerated unless you have very poor eyesight, but heck...

But based and ready for battle, the 1st Picardie regiment, one of the oldest of lil' Louis's armies, they have a long and glorious history on the battlefield and now march on the field of battle of the AHPC, in a bit to conquer the island in the name of the Roi Soleil!

And adds a nice 24x0.5 points, or 12 in simpler terms, to my tally apart from the location bonus of 30 points, totalling 42 points.

And now the way is open to the Snow Lord's Peak, all that remains to be done now is travel the island by balloon and get the five objectives!
