Nearly 13 500 paratroopers landed in and around Saint Mère Eglise on the night of the 5th to the 6th of June 1944.
Among them John Steele of the 82nd division who landed on the steeple of the church and staid there for more than two hours before being freed, he was taken prisoner and escaped three days later.
