Great Britsh Folklore and Superstition MAP

On my last writing workshop, one of my fellow writers brought this Great British Folklore and Superstition MAP. You can find it, like other maps, on the Marvelous Maps website. I had a good look and I really, but really want one. The map is hard to read, but it gives you the whereabouts of many legendary creatures, haunted places, as well as a few monsters from fiction. It would be a highly valuable source of information and inspiration for my scary stories and for this blog during the countdown to Halloween. Even though I am terrible at folding maps.

St Swithin's Day

Today is St Swithin's Day. I like to mention it each year. You can read more about the day on the page here (with a lovely image), taken from What to Look for in Summer. If one is to believe the old tale, we are to have a sunny rest of summer. But it also reminds me that we are in the middle of summer and there is less of the season behind us than ahead of us. So I'm always carefully hopeful come St Swithin's Day.

Chinese Dragons in Brighton

I took this picture in Brighton, at the Royal Pavilion. To make a long story short, because back in the days, they were really into exotism, more specifically Chinese exotism, they drew heavily on Chinese culture, or at least its stereotypes, to decorate the place. Among other things, Chinese dragons. They were not really genuine (many have wings, for instance), but they are everywhere. Anyway, this dragon is obviously a modern addition, part of a special exhibition. All the same, it's a cool dragon and I wanted to share it here. Life is always better with dragons.

Walpurgisnacht!

Beware, beware all! For tonight is Walpurgis Night, a night where witches, ghosts and devils roam the earth. And yes, it is very much like Halloween, but without pumpkins and at the end of April. If you are lucky, you might even get a chill akin to the one you can feel in the best autumn. Be that as it may, Walpurgis Night is one of the important dates in my calendar, the starting point of my countdown to the countdown to Halloween, if you will. So I intend to read horror stories tonight, if I can. I might even start writing a scary story myself, featuring a witch or more. Oh, and if you are wondering about this witch, it's a magnet a friend has on her fridge. I couldn't help but take a picture of it.

George and the Dragon

Happy Saint George's Day everyone! Saint George is of course patron saint of England, even though he was not English and never set foot here. He is also and especially famous for slaying a dragon, which makes it all the more interesting for those, like me, who love old legends and monsters. Anyway, him being patron saint of England means that a lot of pubs here are named George and Dragon. It gave them a nice name, if nothing else. I took this picture in one, the George and Dragon in Marlow. I could make it a yearly tradition: put a picture of a pub called George and Dragon every 23rd of April. Preferably a different pub every time. This is a nice image, the dragon looks bat-like and demomic, interestingly enough.

Sherlock Holmes in London

Today, I am blogging again about this edition of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The first edition I read of the novel and the very first Sherlock Holmes novel I read. As it was aimed at younger readers, it was accompanied by many pictures, really nice ones. We sometimes forget that a substantial amount of time of the plot is spent in London, where Holmes and Watson first see the villain of the story, although only from afar. The antagonist is also disguised under a heavy fake beard, so his identity remains a mystery at this point. It makes for a suspenseful chase in the city, which concludes with the Holmes being bested (by his own admission) by his unknown adversary. This image renders very well the tension and gives to the scene and the setting a neat aura of menace.

The God Sucellos

The things you learn sometimes thanks to a café. I took this picture the Coffee #1 in Wallingford, one of my favourite quaint English towns. So I learned about the Celtic god Sucellos (or Sucellus). I might have read about him before, but have forgotten. I must confess I don't know all that much about pre-Christian Celtic lore, except from what transpired through and into the Arthurian legend. He seems, in appearance at least, to be the Celtic equivalent of Thor, what with his hammer. Anyway, I'm glad I know a little bit more now about Celtic mythology.

Sherlock Holmes on the Moors

I blogged back in February about the first edition I read of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I took this image from the book. You can see Sherlock Holmes in his iconographic if apocryphal clothes, with a deerstalker hat, but an ordinary coat and not an Inverness cape, for some reason. Still, the hat gives him away immediately. In this image, it makes some sense that he is wearing this, as he is on the Devon's moors. Some illustrators and movies have Holmes dressed like this in the middle London, which is patently absurd. Anyway, I think it would be nice to revisit Devon, but more inland this time. Follow the footsteps of Sherlock Homes, when he investigated an old legend who turned into a murder conspiracy.

Second Friday the 13th

For those among you who are superstitious, I am offering my commiseration as I have to remind you that we are Friday the 13th of March. And, to make matters worse, we are the second Friday of the year already. And, to make it even worse, 2026 has three Friday the 13th. For those among you suffering from triskaidekaphobia or paraskevidekatriaphobia, or both (I guess it's always both when you have such phobia), well, this is not your year. But on the plus side, after today, there will be only one Friday the 13th to go. For me, any Friday the 13th is just like any other Friday. I love when evening comes, and it is pretty much the weekend, however, it's a day out at the madhouse, whatever the date Friday falls on.

The Ravens of the Tower of London

Last week, as it was half-term, we decided to go to the Tower of London to meet a childhood friend of my wife, her eldest son being the very first friend of Wolfie. It was my second visit there, and we all had a very pleasant time, in spite of the cold (or maybe even because of it). I'm not sure which one was my favourite part, but I do have to say I really enjoyed seeing the ravens of the Tower. Because I love ravens and because of the legend associated to them: they must remain in the Tower as if they fly away, the British Crown will fall and Britain will too. I don't think it's true, but it's just cool to have ravens as residents.

Friday the 13th: a Doomsday Memory

So, as you probably have noticed, today is Friday the 13th. We have three this year, so the superstitious among you better brace themselves: it's going to be a heavy year. I never was superstitious, except maybe when I was a child, and then it was more for fun than anything else. I always had a certain shiver of fear, of playful uncertainty, when it was Friday the 13th. When we were walking back from school, we sometimes walked along the way with a fellow pupil, not a friend but a friend of a friend. He had a wild imagination and had invented a sort of Doomsday calendar for Friday the 13th. He used to say that this particular day was Zombie Day, or Axe Wielding Maniacs Day, or some such things. He started saying whatever horror Apocalyptic things was meant to happen on this specific Friday the 13th we were on. Then he carried on for the rest of the week. It might have sounded scary, but I found it entertaining in its sinister way. So yeah, this is my most vivid childhood memory of Friday the 13th. What is yours?

Sherlock and Baskerville Hall

During my last time at home, I stumbled upon this book, the first edition I read of The Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. I revisited it a little bit more than a decade ago. It was if I am not mistaken the very first Sherlock Holmes story I ever read, or at least the very first Holmes novel. I might actually have read The Red-Headed League before, I'm not sure. I had of course watched the TV series before. But in many ways, The Hound of the Baskervilles was my first venture into Sherlock Holmes' world and to this day it remains my favourite story. I don't think I will reread it this year, having a lot on my TBR, but it was nice to see the copy I owned when I was a kid.
