Unfortunately, looks like the "4K" disc will be the same as the previous release. I would really like to be wrong, because there is apparently a "Previously Completed 4K Restoration" that looks great, it is just not what was put on the previous disc.
pixelperfectcolor, I hope that's not the case. I'm hoping they mean it's the previous restoration before all of the dnr was applied. I'll definitely be waiting for reviews before purchasing it.
I still can’t believe that they keep dropping the ball on this monumental film. I’m so happy that I held onto the original DVD versions housed in those really cool steelbooks. I watched it a few days ago, and that DVD still looks and sounds great.
"New 4K remaster from new 8K scan" would have got my money immediately! But as is,
"Previously completed 4K restoration of the film" means I will wait for reviews.
StudioCanal confirmed via Twitter it's the same transfer; "Our 30th anniversary editions include the 2017 4K restoration overseen and approved by James Cameron."
We’ll see Avatar 4-6 before we see Cameron pay any real attention to his past works on any format. He’s so high on his own farts he actually thinks that’s where the demand lies.
@philip74 No ABYSS or TRUE LIES because Cameron is too busy with his Smurfs movies. I think it was ARROW recently tweeted about how they want to do a proper 4K restoration and release of T1, but Smurfs come first, and they can't do anything without Cameron.
Oh look...yet ANOTHER cash grab & re-release of T2...but no True Lies or The Abyss in sight (due to Avatar 2,3,4,5,6,...?) . Good job... Bravo...Mr. Cameron.
I suppose it depends what went wrong last time. If the 4K restoration is great and they botched the job of transferring it to disc, then this "might" be okay. But if the restoration was flawed, or they're going to replicate that exact same disc, then this is another hard pass. Reports suggest the latter case is true unfortunately.
The last perfect film James Cameron made, and he probably hates it. True Lies will never be given a decent release because its too much fun and The Abyss because it has too much heart. This is probably the way it will go until his diving pod fails to return
What the fuck are they thinking? I’m sorry, are we supposed to wait for them to re-release this on 4K Blu for the 3rd time for them to maybe not screw this up? Throw the old transfer out the window, unless they have a version of it prior to all the DNR they applied. Cmon. Don’t ruin one of the best movies of all time. This may be the last physical release it ever gets. Someone tell James Cameron to pull his ass out of Pandora and sign off on a new restoration of this film.

Speaking of DNR has there been a good copy of Predator out yet?
Maybe when this release bombs, they'll realize they have to actually do something, and they'll tell James Cameron to fuck off so they can complete a new 4K restoration from scratch.
At this point, I'm all Terminatored out. It's lost it's impact for me. I'm happy for those who want it but just as a whole, the franchise unfortunately has taken a nose dive.
@Everyone - there was nothing wrong with the 4K transfer that was certified by Cameron. Studio Canal then DNR'ed that transfer for 3D mastering and mistakenly used it for their 4K disc master. So *hopefully* they will use this opportunity to correct that. So yes, they can use the 4K transfer - but then master it directly for disc - which would then be a vast improvement. Trouble is, we won't know until the discs start going out whether they did that or lazily (and cheaply) reissued the previous 4K disc. Unfortunately I'm not seeing any Dolby Vision logos anywhere (Studio Canal's newer discs all use it) so it's likely the same disc. Which is very disappointing.
The whole deal with Cameron, this movie, The Abyss and True Lies is genuinely approaching levels of bizarre. For all the criticisms many have long since lobbed at Lucas for his (alleged) insecurities and neuroses with the constant retooling of all things Star Wars on home video, one could never accuse him of neglect or outright disavowment. Maybe he obsessed over those movie too much his own but they always mattered to him at least. I can't for the life of me figure where Cameron's headspace is with the films in question.
@PeterTHX - have you seen for yourself this unbotched 4K transfer, as certified by Cameron? Can you attest to it being effectively different than the final product we were left with? It would be interesting -- hopeful -- if what you say is true; hopeful to the chance that this upcoming release might actually seize the opportunity proper.
A great 4K UHD of Predator has been out for years. Read the review on this site if you doubt and buy it ASAP. As for T2, the 2015 Blu-ray has the Ultimate Skynet Edition transfer sans DNR. That’s the best we can get at this time.
"StudioCanal will celebrate the 30th anniversary of Terminator 2 with a brand new 4K Blu-ray edition of the film"
"Previously completed 4K restoration of the film"
We can not blame the studio but Cameron himself. This transfer is approved by the director himself so how can Studio Canal change it without his approval?
I'll try to be cautiously optimistic that restoration means just that - close to how T2 looked 30 years ago on film. But if they just slap the previous 4K into a new package they will be demonstrating outright contempt for consumers, and will be rightly pilloried for it.
The answer is, there is no reason to fix this film again. Most of my friends replied that they downloaded the movie in mkv and that they see the movie fine.
As an aside, a 4K restoration of 'The Abyss' was completed in 2019 under Cameron's supervision, and a blu-ray release was to be announced by or before the end of that year .. sigh
Hard pass not until they fix the DNR issue and not until Terminator 2 4K comes with the Special Cut and the Ultimate Cut. first Terminator needs to also come out on 4K Blu-Ray not sure this hasn't happened yet.
Can't understand Terminator 2 for 4K why it is getting terrible treatment when every release VHS, DVD, Super-bit DVD, and Blu-Ray got great treatment. Sad really Terminator 2 is really where the series does end the rest of the sequels and reboot is blah, but Terminator 3 is still watchable.
Oh for God's sake can't they put T2:3D for home viewing already (similar to how BTTF: The Ride are in the BTTF trilogy sets)? There's no way to experience the T2:3D anymore unless you go to Universal Studios Japan.
It's over. It is unlikely that any such DNR-free, non-teal graded master stands ready for Cameron to release to the public. In 2017, James Cameron said that the 4K scan was "de-noised and sharpened"....https://youtu.be/zlMwjbBrzmY?t=48.
Also this about Cameron and T2:
Speaking about the conversion, which is expected to hit cinemas in a limited re-release later this year, he explained how the remastering process made the film look even better than it did in cinemas back in 1991:
“I think the overall quality of the film, the quality of the presentation; we worked very hard on good 3D. We started with a 4K transfer, then we did a degraining process, so it actually looks better, even if you watch it in 2D it would look better than it did on the day.” https://www.darkhorizons.com/cameron-talks-terminator-2-3d-conversion/
It's kinda sad to think Cameron is a film director who probably sets the "True Motion" setting to max on his teevee when watching flicks. A fricken Film Director who thinks degraining films is a good thing. What the WTF
Wonderful, something new to keep that flaming hot thread of hate going in the forums. Even as the biggest T2 fan this is a hard sell seeing as how I've already gotten the current 4K for about $9 and this offers little in the way of worthwhile upgrades, save for maybe that message "this 3D conversion was made by...." being ommitted frm the 2D presentation. Really can't fathom how they let that slip by before, and it goes to show the lack of effort going around.
Are the extended cuts FINALLY in 4K??? Can it finally be? I have no interest in the theatrical version, only the longer cuts. Now I can actually buy this movie in 4K. I stopped buying it on DVD.
Maybe in this case, 4th time is a charm. I don't want Cameron to die, but this megalomaniac perfectionist will wait until the end of the world to finally release all his films in HD, much less 4K. Perhaps the 50th anniversary of Terminator 2 will finally have an excellent transfer... in 16K.
I'll only buy this again if the US gets the 3D version. This is the movie I've probably watched more than any other in existence. An all time favorite, but the US being passed up on getting a 3D disc last time was beyond disappointing for me.
Will wait to read if this is the "previous 4K transfer" from BEFORE or AFTER the "de-graining for 3D". I would like a copy of the 3D Bluray just for fun, but that seems to not be a Region A thing for some reason.
The movie is awful. John Conner is annoying. Dark Fate he dies and it's awesome! The only movie worth watching is The Terminator which is a frame by frame remake of Halloween...
I really don't understand how they can't fix this mess and deliver an exceptional looking UHD. SC isn't going to be able to fool consumers with fancy packaging. UHD is a format for enthusiasts.
I've owned this more than once in every format to date; including twice on Laser Disc, but 4k isn't happening until they get the transfer right. I don't care who is at fault, I've heard all the stories, just get it right!
At this stage in the game, the constant rereleases are either Lionsgate, SC, or a store’s doing. It’s case by case. JC probably has no say in it except that it must be this shitty master. As for the transfer and the refusal to make a new one, that part’s JC. As far as I know, SC didn’t even make the transfer, JC’s team did. SC/Lionsgate would have owned this and did a new restoration by now. They have done so several times in the past, going back to the VHS days. The real mess in this - the transfer - is all James Cameron’s doing. If there were a hundred rereleases of a great transfer nobody would care about the quantity. It’s the fact that 1 there is no good transfer and 2 it keeps getting repackaged and rereleased as a new item that keeps pissing people off.
Shane Rollins - you got it DEAD WRONG! It was studio canal that bodged it. The actual info on wat went on is reported on digitalbits.com. Cameron did his part with the 4k restoration but later Studio Canal's people had a mix-up and mistakenly used the 3D Master for the 4k release - by then Cameron had long left to resume his own stuff. There's a reason at the beginning of the 4k disc, you see the odd disclaimer saying like 'This film has been remastered in 3D' - proof that it was the wrong master used. Digitalbits.com confirms the actual 4k master completed by Cameron looks amazing, grain and all intact but why Studio Canal can't bothered to rectify this is unknown. I dunno where / how you made up your crappy info/ accusation but it's nothing but BS.
