Book 1 in the New Species series.

Ellie is horrified to discover the pharmaceutical company she works for is doing illegal experiments. Company scientists have spliced human and animal DNA, creating exotic new species. One such “experiment” captures her heart and she’ll do anything to save him—even if he hates her for it.

Fury has never known compassion or love. He’s spent his life in a cell, chained and abused by humans. The one woman he allowed himself to trust betrayed him. Now he’s free and set on vengeance. He vows to end her life but when she’s finally in his grasp, harming her is the last thing he wants to do to the sexy little human.

Fury can’t resist Ellie—the touch of her hands, her mouth on his skin, her body wrapped around his. He’s obsessed with the scent of his woman. And Ellie wants Fury—always has. She craves his big, powerful body and wants to heal his desolate heart.

But loving Fury is one thing…taming him is another.

Reader Advisory: This story contains the heartrending aftermath of a rape scene involving a captive male. Another scene involves capture and forced touching by a hurt, vengeful Fury.

I had a rather short area here telling a little about me but then I had more than a few people ask me to expand it so... here goes. LOL. I'm a full time home 'supervisor' which is a nice word for saying I'm a housewife. I'm married happily, I met my dream guy 20 years ago, and we have 4 children. I live in Southern California and I can't function without iced coffee. I believe in romance, I've always been a daydreamer, and I'm a HUGE fan of books, always have been.

No, I didn't know that I always wanted to write. I inhaled books as a child. I read entire series (Pippi Longstocking, Nancy Drew and The Hardy Boys, Trixie Beldon, The Borrowers, etc) in a matter of days at a time. By the time I was nine years old I had an adult library card where I visited often. I moved on to John Saul, Stephen King, Richard Laymon, Agatha Christie, and then found romance. I was hooked. I wrote poetry in my teens and then moved on to short stories. My first book was started after I read a real bomb of a book that ticked me off with really horrible characters and a plot that was shabby at best and I thought... I could do better. LOL.

I wrote my first book which will probably never see the light of day in the early 90's. I wrote a series of a few books from it. I'm a series fan! I kept writing for fun, wrote MANY books and then in 2009 I decided to try to get published. I wrote my first Sci Fi romance and Ral's Woman came to be. I submitted it and with a little tweaking, Ellorascave sent me an acceptance letter. It was kind of a 'Cinderella' experience for me. It's been a terrific ride so far and I'm really happy that I finally had the time to commit to writing full time. It's a dream come true.

“Sense of smell. I know you want me. Your scent is so sweet when you are aroused. I want to lick you and feast on your desire. You’ve been torturing me for days.”

Fury is the First book in the New Species Series. This is my first time reading a Laurann Dohner novel, and I really liked it. I really love the different take on the world of shifters that she made. I have read nothing like it before and that alone made me intrigued. Add to that a evil pharmaceutical company, illegal experiments, abuse, and forbidden love and you have a must read!!

“I knew it would be this incredible,” he stated in a raspy voice. “Too good.” Anger tightened his features then for a few heartbeats. “Damn you for affecting me this strongly, Ellie.”

 photo fury.jpg_zpsnto3at9g.jpg

Fury is filled with rage. A test subject held in a cell prison experimented on and abused most of his life now he is free, and trying to help his people start their lives. He has never known kindness, or love, until Ellie. She is so small so human, he knows he should stay away, but he just can't! Fury was a Total bad ass. Possessive, super protective, sexy, fun, and strong willed. I loved Fury's character!

“I want you. I hate it but I hurt to be inside you, to know what it would feel like to have you wrapped around me, and the pleasure I think I could find with you. I’ve never wanted a woman more. Tell me I can have you or help me remember that I can’t ever forgive what you did to me. Say something, anything, to remind me why I shouldn’t hurt to be with you so much it makes it hard for me to breathe.”

“I just want you. I paced the entire time you were gone, imagining the worst. I just want inside you. I want you screaming my name and your scent filling my head. I need to feel your wet heat, to bury myself in you deep and hold you there for as long as I can keep us connected.”

“I don’t have affairs. You are the only woman I want.”

Ellie worked for Mercile not knowing the evil things they were doing. Asked to go undercover and get the info on Mercile, and help bring them down, and help free the New Species! Since the day she seen subject 416 she can't get him off her mind. In order to get the deeds on the evil pharmaceutical company she has to do things that make her sick, but she will do what ever it takes to save 416 even if she hates herself. Ellie was playful, and sassy, and very loving, but she didn't really stand out to me. She was just kind of there not bad, or anything, but not unforgettable.

Ellie shook her head. “You are going to rest or I swear I’ll borrow a Taser gun, shoot your ass, and tie you to the bed.” Fury growled viciously at her and his dark eyes narrowed. Ellie growled back at him and tugged harder. “Don’t snarl at me. I will do it right back. Now let’s get you undressed.” She glared up at him. “You are supposed to be in the hospital still. Don’t give me any shit, Fury. I love you to death but if you don’t lie down, I will borrow his Taser gun. I mean it.”

“It’s going to be all right,” Ellie promised softly. “We’re together and I’m going to sit here with you for however long it takes for you to feel better. You aren’t going to hurt me. I know you won’t because you love me as much as I love you.”

The story was a great read with tons of steamy sex, protective powerful sexy alpha males, and a strong interesting plot. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who loves PRN!! I am on to the next book. I will leave you with my favorite moment from the book.

Ellie moved closer, rising to her tiptoes to brush her lips against his ear. “I love your ass and the fact that you’re totally healed up. I can’t wait to get you alone.” “Ellie?” Slade spoke. Ellie turned her head. “I’m talking over here.” “And we’re all listening,” Slade chuckled while he tapped his ear. “Keen hearing. Glad to know Fury is back to a hundred percent though.” Blushing, Ellie glared at him. “What is it with you guys? Couldn’t you at least pretend you didn’t hear that?” Slade winked. “Where would be the fun in that? You blush so cutely.”

Dear Fury,

By the time you're reading this I'd already moved on. It's not you; it's me. LOLJK, it's totally you, sorry.
description

Look, our relationship started really well. I adored you in the prologue, and while Ellie's penis grabbing actions did not really seem rational to me, I was more than willing to shrug them off because you were such an interesting guy. I wanted to get to know you better.

And so I read on.

But you see, whatever infatuation I had for you from the moment I met you quickly vanished when you started getting violent. I totally understand that you had a rough past. I get it. We all have our issues. But I just can't, for the life of me, appreciate someone who would:
1. Threaten to kill a woman (and mean it for a certain period of time)
2. Manhandle her to the point of bruising
3. Kidnap her, tie her to the bed and have revenge sex (rape?) with her

Seriously, dude. Why did it take you so long to understand that Ellie was forced by circumstances to do what she did? You were so fucking selfish with all the unwarranted hate. You had no right to treat her so poorly at the beginning.

By the 25% marker, I just lost all my respect for you.
description

And okay, it didn't make sense when you just did a 180 after having sex with her. I was glad when you finally stopped with all the "should I kill her or should I fuck her" drama but I feel like it could have been handled better. It was just too abrupt.

To give you credit though, you did try to redeem yourself in my eyes. I appreciated how you obsessed over Ellie once you dealt with your shit. But it was just too late, Fury. 30+ pages too late. And the things you did were just unforgiveable. Call me a sucker for morality, but I just can't stand it when guys get too violent/asshole-y.

So yeah. I wish you all the best. I'm sure that there are tons of ladies out there who can give you the love and understanding that you deserve, but I'm not one of them.

Thank you, though. Because even for just a few pages, we did have some good times together.

Goodbye.

Amazing, MIND blowing and a captivating read. This PNR series surprised me with how good it is. From the compassionate, tortured characters, to this new world I suddenly stumbled across. I was immediately and completely engaged from the prologue, all the way till the end.
description

New Species, born to a world where their existence is filled with sorrow, humiliation and pain. A species illegally created from human and animal DNA. Chained and held in a facility, where their purpose is to be tested and experimented on with different drugs for a 'supposedly' pharmaceutical company.
description

Ellie a worker at Mercile, discovers she's not just working for an ordinary pharmaceutical company, but one that runs an illegal drug research facility, with the New Species as its test subjects. Ellie works as a spy to help free the New Species from their horrible and inhuman situation. Not knowing how drawn and attached she would grow to one of the prisoners...416.
description

Fury, known as test subject 416, has only known misery and torture in his life, until he meets Ellie. She stirs something in him and captures his heart from the beginning. Ellie earns Fury's trust before they've even communicated, before he truly knew who she was to him.
description

Together these two are amazing. The chemistry is out of this world sexy. From playful intimacy, to tied up and smothered in honey, Fury and Ellie were the perfect fit. How can you not love fierce, half animal sex, with certain *throat clearing* body parts expanding.
description

Ellie, strong and determined, fights to help the New Species, and to keep Fury. But nothing comes easy when your defending and protecting a species from hate groups.
description

I felt that Ellie handled herself pretty well in hard situations she experienced throughout the book. She was caring and always looking out for the safety of others, especially Fury.
description

Fury is a dominate alpha male all the way. His loyal to his people, and determined to help them lead a better life. I loved how fierce and protective he was towards Ellie. He saw her as his and would fight or kill anyone who thought to take her away from him.
description

Ellie and Fury worked hard to overcome the difficulties of forming a new relationship. One between a New Species and a human, that has never been done before. They prove that nothing is impossible in the face of love.
description

I really enjoyed discovering this new world on New Species and the challenges they overcome. I'm highly intrigued to read about the secondary characters mentioned in this book and the deep love they discover along the way.

Mates don't hesitate to read this one. Its awesome with a lot of smexy added in xx

I admit that I love when non-humans try to human and they aren't quite pulling it off. I love animals and find them super amusing, so when books do a good job putting those characteristics into personalities, I love it. Whether it's shifters, aliens, talking animals, or "other" trying to human or understand humans, I'm in.

Exhibit A - this is one of my favorite memes.

In this book, we have a new species that has been created by the evil drug company. You see, drug companies are evil. The desire to heal disease through science seems to inspire greed, psychopathic behavior, and aspirations of world domination through toe fungus medication. If you think about it, of course they are going to kidnap a bunch of babies and mutate their genes by splicing in animal genes, stick them in cells where they are chained to the wall for their entire lives (except when they send them out to fight each other), force them to breed or die, and torture them daily. Sure in the next room some guy is trying to make a better penis pill and Alice is bitching that someone stole her yogurt from the breakroom fridge, but they have learned to ignore the screams of anguish and pain coming through the walls. It's just another Wednesday at the office. Humpday - so freaking long.

Anyway, we have Ellie, a human who went undercover to help blow the lid off of this horror show, and Fang, a New Species guy who may or may not be some sort of wolf hybrid. They get off to a rocky start: she frames him for murder, he vows to kill her out of revenge. Not exactly your typical way of meeting a love interest, but probably still safer than meeting someone online.

Ellie and Fury live in a compound that was given to the New Species when they were freed. They have some humans on staff to help them transition into the world and Ellie is the "house mother" for the female apartments. Now, the females are freaking awesome! They are bigger and stronger than humans and very fierce. When they think that Ellie has been hurt by someone, I love their reaction:

"Tell us who hurt you and we will go beat the shit out of him."

Breeze cracked her knuckles. "We'll allow you to watch. It will make you feel better to see him bleed." She glanced at the others. "We can't kill him though. We'll just beat him up severely to make sure he is in pain for a good week."

Now, those are some girlfriends! We should all have each others' backs like that. And, I would definitely be willing to join an angry girl mob for a few of my goodreads buddies here. I know there have been times in my life when I would have felt better to watch a couple of people bleed. I'm a sweetheart.

kidney, liver, whatever...

But, just like with anything new and slightly different, the New Species have enemies cuz we are uncomfortable and afraid of that which we don't understand. There are protesters and hate-groups outside the compound that want to kill all of the non-humans. They are okay with killing any humans who happen to be inside too. They don't discriminate. Well, actually, they do, but in that case, they won't. Any New Species-loving human is bad.

So, the relationship between Fang and Ellie doesn't only start out bad, but it becomes a huge controversy since they are the first inter-species relationship ever. They have to come up against a lot of crap! And, that's good because they will clear the way for future inter-species relationships - like maybe with some Earth girls and Blue Aliens...

This book has a lot of humor, and beware - there is sex and violence too. I liked both Ellie and Fang, and I thought the side characters were well developed and definitely not typical. It will be fun to get to know the other New Species as the series goes on.

All in all, I can see why so many of my friends liked this book. I hope it's the start to an awesome series.

Fury was SUCH a wonderful book!
I was actually a bit nervous since all the reviewers on GR rated it 2-4 stars.
It's still a mystery to me as to why, because i LOVED it!

I have been wanting to start this series for SUCH A LONG TIME. I think it's been 2 years now. Finally got some sense into myself and brought it.
Let me tell ya something - after the 1st chapter i called myself a genius for picking it up.

A lot of readers have been saying this is extremely similar to Laura Leigh's Breeds series. I don't know as i haven't read them. But i think it's mean saying Fury is a poor copy version of it.

I haven't read anything quite like Fury. So i found the plot very refreshing and new.
It was awesome and one of the reasons i loved it so much.
It's good to read something unique once in a while.

What i thought of Fury?:

Fury has that name for a reason! He is filled with rage on everyone who inflicted pain upon him and his kind and who betrayed him. Who gained his trust and then crushed it right in front of his face.
I felt emotional reading about his past and the pain he injured when he was locked up and experimented on.

Let's not forget he is NOT human! Only partly. He is also canine (or something like that - can't remember the name but it's some sort of animal). And OMG do i wish i could have my own Fury to do the things he does in bed! YUM!

tumblr inline mqzede HEds1qz4rgp

What i thought of Ellie?:
I thought she was a fantastic heroine! She was very brave, caring and tenderhearted. Fully human of course.
I don't remember ever being annoyed with her.
She had suffered a bit from bullying and people who couldn't accept her for who she was.
However, Fury changed that and showed her just how beautiful he thought she was, and that her looks didn't even matter to him.

tumblr m7oy4cr DNr1rc4kt0o1 500

This book had some flaws, don't get me wrong. I felt like the characters were sometimes repeating the same things all over again and that bored me a little. I admit a skipped a tiny bit of those parts.

But Fury was action packed and i didn't want to stop reading. In fact i stayed way past bed time cause i couldn't force myself to put it down - yes it was that good.
I even didn't go to university for the day because the urge to finish it and find out what will happen next was very strong. Too strong to resist. I got in shitload of trouble for that.

100% True

Overall...

Fury was an AMAZING book that i could not put down and i thought about constantly. The characters and plot are realistic and epic. Sex scenes were freaking HOT! The ending was very cute and a great HEA!

Definitely pick it up, ladies!

Well....... I picked up this notorious story so I could finally assuage my raging curiosity. Going into it, I was well aware of the blaring similarities between 'Fury', (and the rest of the New Species series from Dohner) and the older, but more well-known 'Breeds' series from Lora Leigh that I, and hordes of others, (mostly) love.

After having now read it, I can say there's no denying the plot and storyline of 'Fury' is indeed quite similar to that of the 'Breeds' novels and it does bear mentioning. However, I will admit that their execution is very different.

For one, the 'Breeds' books are, well, quite a bit naughtier (which, truth be told, is part of their allure.... for me at least!), while Dohner's style is very vanilla (and this is true for other Dohner books I've read). Also, Leigh's stories (for the most part) are wayyyy more emotional - and when she's on, you really feel the turmoil that's tantamount to the story. In contrast, Dohner's characters seem a tad hollow in comparison.

In terms of the characters, I would say that Leigh favors macho, alpha, "bad-boy" heroes who take charge and love to talk dirty, and Dohner is into big, brawny dudes who display a mix of alpha and beta characteristics and are a bit naive.

Now... to 'Fury'!

This book started out really strong IMO, and I was settling in to really enjoy this story despite its inherent likeness to the 'Breeds'. The prologue was controversial and harrowing, and the initial chapters where Ellie interacts with the newly freed New Species females, "reunites" with Fury and the standoff with the pro-human fanatics were intense.

However, things kind of fizzled for me from there. It didn't get "bad" per se, but it did get predictable and boring in parts. The recurrent "misunderstandings" that kept cropping up between Justice and Fury, regarding sexual interludes between Ellie and Fury, got especially tedious after the first one. I kind of felt like Dohner just kept adding scenarios to the story to make it longer. If she had of kept to the old adage that less is more and focused instead on her stronger plot points it would have made an overall better story.

As it stands, I would say that 'Fury' was a quick, entertaining yet somewhat forgettable book. At this time I don't plan on reading the rest of the series - I'm not overly interested in the other New Species we met in 'Fury' and after having read the blurbs on the books that follow none have really piqued my interest. My curiosity is appeased for now.

Fury is intense, intriguing, fun, and extremely steamy. There are some editing issues that make the writing feel disjointed and convoluted at times (shame on you Eleanor's Cave). Other than that, I very much enjoyed this great start to the series.

DNF. Sigh. This has only happened to me 3 times before, but I actually could not finish this book.

I really struggled with this one. The world/concept/story was good, but the writing was just so BAD!! And the sex was so beyond cheesy, even from the start, it was literally making me cringe and/or roll my eyes.

I stopped reading at 65%. But if I had to rate what I’d read so far, I’d give it about 2.5 stars – somewhere between ‘barely okay’ and ‘meh’.

It was just to the point where I was forcing myself to keep going and with so many other books out there that I just can’t wait to get to, I couldn’t bring myself to waste time on something I didn’t love.

I actually really liked the concept behind this book. Basically, a pharmaceutical company conducted extensive illegal experiments in their secret labs splicing together human and animal DNA to try and create “New Species” – which ideally would be kinds of super-humans with all the best qualities of both species. Problem was, their experiments were cruel, brutal and utterly abhorrent - the subjects were kept chained up and subject to all manners of abuse. Ellie undergoes an undercover operation to get intel that will prove its existence so that the government can shut them down. While she is undercover, she finds herself attracted to one of the experiment subjects, Fury. But the day she finally got the intel, she is about to get out when she sees him drugged in a private room with one of the scientists who basically attempts to torture, rape and kill him (yes, it gets a little graphic). She saves him by bursting in and killing the scientist but the only way for her to get herself out alive is to blame the killing on him (she basically banks on the idea that the scientists won’t kill him because of how valuable he is)…. Fast forward a year, Ellie’s intel got the evil company shut down and the government has set up a rehabilitation center for all the New Species members. There Ellie and Fury cross paths again. Fury feel utterly betrayed by her for the way she left him because while they didn’t kill him for the murder she blamed on him, they did torture him. But still, they both are intensely attracted to each other and inevitably end up together.

I found the writing style to be very stilted, formulaic and flat. It didn’t pull me in, didn’t make me ‘feel’ for the characters and I hate to say it but the dialogue was just downright bad. And it was actually the reason I stopped reading. It was just so off-putting.

I also found that despite there being a fair bit of sex in the books, I felt the romance took much too long to develop. They didn’t become a couple until after the 50% mark and before then (and after as well), their sex scenes were either making me shake my head, roll my eyes, or just want to face palm and although they clearly were crazy about each other, and I knew that, I just didn't feel it - which to me is the most important element in a book. I want to FEEL the story.

Here’s an example of the sex-scene that finally made me stop the book. And I know its supposed to be erotica (which is a genre I have no problem with. Its not how graphic it is that bothered me, it was that it wasn't well-written erotica IMO).

“My cock swells. Remember? I’m so damn ready to come right now that I wouldn’t last a minute…”
She stared at him with dawning comprehension.
“Oh. That probably wouldn’t be good, considering you’re already pretty big. I think it would be okay though as long as I stick to the top. You swell near the base.”
…”Yeah. I’d love for you to do that but don’t turn me on so much next time, the first time we try something. I’m a shooter, Ellie. You can feel me inside you when my semen releases, can’t you? I’d shoot so hard and so much, I’d choke you.”

*cringe* … Its not the concept I have a problem with, its the way its written.

That being said, I know this will sound weird, but I didn’t hate the book. I actually kinda liked it and its quite highly rated on Goodreads so I was surprised with my reaction to it. The men were very Alpha and possessive and technically, the kind of guy I like but I just personally really could not connect with the writing.

So I just decided to stop. It just wasn’t the book for me.

This was a reread for me....not sure how many it was. It is one of my all-time favorite books and I will never get tired of reading it. I just LOVE how obsessed Fury is with Ellie.

“I’m obsessed with her. She smiles and I melt. I want to hear her voice and just be close to her.”

"I’m obsessed with her. I breathe and live Ellie. My heart beats for her, Justice. She is everything to me. I think I’m addicted to her scent. Without it around it’s all I can think about."

Familiar but good!

The following ratings are out of 5:
Narration: 🎙🎙🎙🎙
Romance: 💚🖤💙💜❤️
Heat/Steam: 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Story/Plot: 📕📗📙📔
World building: 🌎🌍🌏🌎
Character development: 🙃🥹☺️🤭🥵

The heroine: Ellie - she is working undercover at an illegal testing lab in order to gather evidence against the company and release all of the test subjects including 416 whom she feels for since he has been one of the favorites of the men who mistreat the test subjects. The test subjects were created by splicing human and animal DNA.

The Hero(es): Fury (a.k.a. 416) - He spent his life being chained up, abused and experimented on. He is full of rage and hatred. Ellie was the only one who showed him kindness. So when she betrays Fury, he wants revenge.

The Story: When Ellie finds 416 in a room with one of the worst guards being physically abused in a horrible way, after being drugged. she goes crazy and kills the guard. This happened on the worst possible day, since she had just returned from breaking into one of the doctor’s offices and downloading enough information to put the company out of business for good. She still needed to get the stolen data out of the building at the end of the day and to her handler.

I liked the story despite its being a bit derivative of Lora Leigh’s Breeds series. Though I really loved that series so I didn’t mind the similarities. Like Breeds, this has genetically altered human/animal hybrids who were kept in captivity, experimented on and tortured for years who are now trying to make a life for themselves on a compound while surrounded by hicks and bigots who picket outside the gates and some of them get even more creative and try to go after them.

The book was told in Ellie’s point of view and the narration was done by Vanessa Chambers. Recently I have been passing over audiobooks that only have one narrator, but I found that I enjoyed Vanessa’s voice and didn’t mind the lack of a male narrator. It helps that Vanessa has a multitude of voices that she uses for different characters.

This book is RIDICULOUS.

I should have hated it. But instead I ate this right up!

This has been on my radar for ages but it wasn't until Kate enthusiastically recommended it that I decided to jump on in.

It has everything that I love hate in a paranormal romance novel:

~Insta-love.
~Miscommunication between characters.
~An alpha who is so alpha that he chokes out the leading lady to get her to his bed.
~Dubious consent.
~Scent descriptions of vanilla and strawberries.
~So much drama that there could have been 100 books based on what happened in this.

^^ This should have been a train wreck for me. This should have been a one star review, because usually even just a whiff of one of those things would make me ragequit. But this was magical. I haven't been so thoroughly immersed in a paranormal romance for a long while. I was actually on the edge of my seat with butterflies in my stomach the entire time I read this.

Fury is such a controlling dickhead. Ellie is an idiot. And yet I could not stop reading their trials, tribulations and blossoming love. And the sex! ERMEGERD. *dies*

As mentioned above, there is enough drama contained in 273 pages for about ten books and by the end I thought we really could have done with 50 or so less pages and wrapped things up a bit sooner. Also I'm not quite sure all of the story threads were actually tied up properly? But I was too distracted by the saucy sex to realize this until I started writing my review...

Also can I just say that Justice needs to learn some boundaries? Fury and Ellie never caught a break from him. He was always jumping to conclusions and being an idiot and making things worse. I hope someone steps in and cockblocks him when I get to his book. Dude needs to chill.

Some editing errors and weird words here and there but they weren't bad enough to hamper my reading experience.

So in conclusion, I loved this a lot. I don't know if it is just right book, right time, but I thoroughly enjoyed the entire thing and can't wait to read the rest of the series.

This was so much better than I expected!

I kept hearing about this series and I kept putting if off. Now I had nothing to read and I was kind of looking for something between "meh" and "nice". What I didn't expect was to get an incredible book instead!

Still, I would have wanted a bit more of the plot, the story builder. I'm hoping to find more in the next one though.

Yup yup, this really is as good as everyone says it is. I'm glad I read it!

I have to confess something. Something that will tell you all you need to know about me. Something that will make you understand why I will always give these books high ratings. I loved, loved, LOVED Dark Angel, the show with Jessica Alba.

I mean look at that! Max is half feline and her brother Joshua is half canine. And her other brother is Jensen Ackles, I don't need to say anything about him. He's Jensen Ackles. Enough said.

The whole secret government experiments with half human half animal spliced beings created in a lab is my thing. Seriously, it’s close to an addiction. I think about it way too often for it to be normal. I wish one of them had horns. Why didn’t any of the New Species have horns??

I guess horns are not that practical. And speed and strength might be a better animal trait to have, but I want horns! This might also explain my addiction to Saga and Sweet Tooth. Both MC’s have horns. Uhm... I’m not ready to go there yet. Moving on.

Confession number two, since I’m already telling you everything, I love mates. I love the idea of mates. I love the possessiveness of mates. I love the growling. I know some people hate the whole instant love mates trope. I don’t! I mean if it’s not instant love are they even really mates? The answer is no. Give me mates that at first sniff know they are doomed forever. First. Sniff.

So to say that I loved this book to pieces is an understatement. It had a new species and mates. It also had forbidden love because you know a human and New Species can’t be together. This was my cup of tea.

“Oh boy. I do have a question.”
“Hit me,” Breeze smiled. “That is slang.” The smile died. “Don’t really hit me though. You couldn’t hurt me but I might hit you back and that would injure you.”

I also loved the New Species women so much. I’ve seen the order of the books. I wish at least one centered on a female with a human. Switch it up a bit. These girls kick ass. They were funny and kind and loyal too. The New species watches a lot of television to catch up on human talk. In order to decipher our really bad grammar and idioms and well the English language in general. English is hard. So their conversations and trying to talk like humans was hilarious and honestly well done. There’s so much to work with there.

“Now tell us which one of our males hurt you and we’ll go beat the shit out of him. We’ll allow you to watch. It will make you feel better to see him bleed.” She glanced at the others. “We can’t kill him though. We’ll just beat him up severely to make sure he is in pain for a good week.”

I mean, how can you not love that woman!?!?! I want her to be my best friend. This was a really enjoyable read for me. Obviously. I confessed my love for all things New Species. I also love Ellie's protectiveness of Fury. When everyone assumes Fury was hurting Ellie. She defends him. She even said so herself. “Why does everyone assume you’re hurting me?!?!” She defended him and their relationship and Fury really needed that. She never made Fury feel different or other. She was brave and strong and just a good person

Ellie was what Fury needed and she made him stronger. There’s so much crap that happens with evil government types and crazy hate groups. Which was so funny (ironic not haha) to me because a couple of years ago I’d say those hate groups were exaggerated but now I know those crazy fuckers are out there getting stronger and crazier by the minute. Uhm...that turned dark real quick. Sorry. What I mean is, the crazy hate groups are after the New Species and there was so much fighting and other New Species freedom things going on that made the book even better. I was expecting hot animal sex between a human and a New Species, which I got, but I also got government experiments and so much more.

Pick it up if you want to remember your Dark Angel days or just to read a very interesting, adventure packed, love story sprinkled with a little bondage and a lot of growling.

I have just finished reading the entire Breeds Series by Lora Leigh, which I loved and was on the lookout for a similar series. After reading so many glowing series on the New Species Series by Laurann Dohner, I decided to give it a try.

Fury is the first book in the series and gives us an introduction into the world of human/animal experimentation done by the government.

What struck me from the beginning was how so alike it was to the Breeds Series.

Corrupt scientists are creating/testing a new species by splicing human/animal DNA to what is suppose to be helping cure illness in humans but instead are creating fighting machines. When the President is made aware of the truth about the torture and abuse these new beings have gone through and the true nature of the program, he immediately frees them and gives them their own land where they can be free and live peacefully together. These creations who want to be treated as humans live with their nightmares of what was done to them in the labs. Despite the testing ban, there are still scientists out there who refuse to stop their experimentation. The infiltrate their compound constantly and there seems to be no end to these poor beings left alone. Sounds close to the Breeds storyline, doesn’t it????

Anyway, Fury is part human/part dog…huh!!!! He went through a terrible time in the labs – tortured, raped and abused. Ellie is a nurse and is working undercover at the pharmaceutical company labs where

Fury is being held prisoner and experimented on.
Due to her efforts, the species are freed but Fury believes that she had betrayed him in the lab.

When he discovers her working in the Species compound, his mission is to kill her.

I did enjoy the chemistry between the two and some hot scenes, though at times I felt some of the sex scenes were not really necessary. At first, I was unsure about Ellie…did I like her or not!! She did a few things that irritated me but in the end, loved how she fought for Fury and for their love.

A lot happens in this book. We learn about the experiments, meet characters that will be part of the series. I particularly liked Justice & Breeze and I will probably continue this series because of the characters.

Eh. That's pretty much all I have to say about the book. It was a alright read, cool story and nice, interesting characters, but other than that? Meh. I did like the concept of the New Species not acting human, it reminded me a bit of the series The Others by Anne Bishop. I love possessive, un-human, powerful, sexy and animalistic men, and Fury was all that. I just wanted more of it, I guess. I'm not sure, at all, if I want to continue the series. I feel kinda done with this world already :O

3.5-4 Genetic stars!

 photo imagejpg1_zpsc714e163.jpg

Mercile Industries is an evil drug research and development company. They are keeping human beings captive to conduct their studies. The test subjects have been genetically altered using animal DNA. Though primarily human, the testees have animal like qualities through their senses and strength. Some have even acquired some animal-like features, depending on what they were blended with.

Ellie has been enlisted as a spy of sorts. She is to try to gather information in order to bring down the cruel company. One particular prisoner has caught her attention. There is something about subject 416 that stands out. She has been secretly fantasizing and dreaming about the man who has lost his free will.

When she finally has the information she needs, something terrible happens. A ruthless technician has a plan to kill 416. She may blow her cover, but she has to save the man from imminent death.

It wasn't an easy situation, but Ellie is able to save 416, and get the information she acquired into the right hands. Mercile Industries is taken down, and the subjects, calling themselves "New Species" are given a military base in which to start out their lives free.

With nowhere else to go, Ellie gets a job to help the New Species fit into society. When she comes across 416, now referred to as Fury, chemistry is undeniable. He has also felt something powerful for the petite blonde who had always been so caring.

 photo imagejpg2_zps67f926b1.jpg

Can a human and New Species find love? With human protestors, jaded employees, and other obvious issues, the two fight for what they need most. Each other.

I am very surprised to say, that I really did enjoy this book. There is absolutely nothing wrong with books with paranormal themes, it just happens to not be my thing. So the fact that I liked this says a lot.

I think it was a good start to the series, and if you know anything about it, you know there are currently 13 (yes, 13!!!) books released so far.

There were both good and bad parts about the book. As far as the good, it held my attention and was very interesting. A lot of suspenseful things occurred that kept me engaged the whole time. At the end, I found myself thinking that it was too soon to end and that I definitely wanted to know more.

I also found the New Species characters very endearing. My heart went out to them for not only what happened to them in the lab, but after getting their freedom. Nothing has been easy, and after taking hit after hit, the new race have been taking things in stride to learning about being in our world. Fury's strong possessive nature was also a plus and totally hot.

I'm a little iffy on Ellie. I liked her, and thought she was very strong and sweet. I'm having a hard time coming up with the perfect word for her though. She was just there. Not an exceptional personality from her. I also thought their love was too strong, for my taste. A slight amount of cheesiness, but not too much where I was gagging.

All in all, I was happy with my experience with this new genre that I am not used to. Maybe it's the fact that they are primarily human, makes this an easier transition into this type of book for me. I think this series has great potential, and will probably be reading more of it in the near future.

I would recommend this, and am glad I stepped out of my comfort zone, because it really was a fun read.

I swore I wouldn't write a review for this book. Then I met Fury and as soon as Ellie described him I could see him and I just had to share.

So ladies and gentlemen meet FURY:

YASSSS! My first Dohner read and it was fantastic!

Ultimate dominate male Fury was an exceptional MC. Having been raised in a testing facility where animal DNA was injected into his system, Fury is filled with hate when it comes to “pure” humans. Until he meets Ellie.

Ellie took a job as a lab assistant to gather evidence to save the subject or “New Species”. She has to betray Fury in order to escape and get the evidence to her handler. As she makes her exit he promises to find and kill her.

Wow! All I can say is wow! The storyline is off the charts! Secondary characters are almost as good as MC and the FMC. Such a wonderful ride! I can not wait to read book 2!

Happy reading! DD

To be honest, the cover made me a bit hesitant to pick this book up. I wasn't sure if it was my cup of tea, but my GR friends seemed to love it so I gave it a go. Turned out, this was good and once I started, I couldn't stop!

Fury is an interesting character. He has both human and animal sides and that made him look so naive in some way. He's so straightforward, protective, and possessive. I liked Ellie, too. She has a kind heart, warmth, and openness towards Fury.

This is another one of my impressive reads.

This book has a set up remarkably similar to Lora Leigh's Breed series, almost uncomfortably so. I am a big fan of LL's Breed series but as we all know, her new work is badly edited (or not edited at all) and just not up to par. So I was kind of glad to read something similar that had a decent story that entertained me. I liked the leads, the heroine had more power in this setup because there was no mating heat to tie them down. The hero is dominant but the heroine is strong enough to stand up for herself. It wasn't a perfect story, sometimes it felt like there was too much outside interference in their relationship from other people. But it was a decent start to a new series that I want to continue reading.

3 1/2 Stars - intense, rather silly but so fun to read!

I must start by saying that I have double feelings regarding this story. On one hand, this is too cheesy, very sentimental and a bit too dramatic. There are big emotions, an overheated caveman and all obstacles that are possible. On the other hand, it is good and fun entertainment.

 photo b19b5f38_zps87d7ce4b.gif photo kissing_zpsbed499e9.gif photo b19b5f38_zps87d7ce4b.gif photo kissing_zpsbed499e9.gif photo b19b5f38_zps87d7ce4b.gif

Ridiculous? Languorous? Yes, I'm sorry to say; sometimes. You can't get away from that in some scenes and in some dialogues between the characters it became just laughable dramatically.

Believable? Realistically? Oh no, but this is an erotic PNR novel. - There are so much fun, steam, drama in this book and it is fanciful told with lots of action. Besides, this story is so very, very cute and lovely romantic. Yum!!

I couldn't help but love this horny “caveman” Fury with only one thought in his head. Or, maybe two. One is to be "inside" of Ellie as often as possible. The second is that she is his - he often grunts “She’s mine!” - Real alpha manners from beginning to end. Luckily, sweet, adorable Ellie enjoys having him "there" and she becomes wholeheartedly his beloved mate pretty soon.
“I want you. I hate it but I hurt to be inside you, to know what it would feel like to have you wrapped around me, and the pleasure I think I could find with you. I have never wanted a woman more.”

There are already so many reviews of this book so I will not get tangled up in to, in any sensible way, try to explain the rather complicated background to why Fury and many others have become the now so-called New Species (from now on called: NS). It has to do with DNA and injections from animals, research on living humans in secret laboratories and a horrible company that took advantage of kids to make money. I didn't understand half of it but it was okay. What I did understand was that these NS people had a terrible life in captivity until the day the police, with help of Ellie’s brave snooping and spying, made sure they were set free.

... A year later, they're all in their new Homeland (thought of as a major military base) wish will now be their first real home and allow for a new peaceful life for them.
 photo image_zps7459726b.jpg

The story begins when Ellie comes to Homeland to work as a house-hostess in the women's house. Even Fury lives here. He, the huge, big, beautiful, sexy and pretty dangerous NS man she met in a dramatic and terrible situation in a cage-like cell just a year earlier. Of course there (this is after all a romance...) is a huge misunderstanding and Fury hates the human woman who betrayed and humiliated him. But that was not the way it was...

I really loved some parts of this novel. - Like the "lesson" about sex and the girls exchange of different preferences between humans and our new friends. - Very fun and nicely told.
“... They would get very angry. Fury would feel insulted if you even asked him to lay meek under you. Our men are dominant.”

But just wait... What doesn't a "hungry" man in love do for his woman?

As I mentioned, it is somewhat cheesy and I rolled my eyes at times. My better me protest but my romantic heart was so happy with these characters and this occasionally quite silly story. All of it is pretty sex fixed. They do "it" rather often and a lot (this guy is blessed with great stamina). So if you want to read a really steamy hot PNR romance then you will surely love this one. Like I did in any case!
 photo image_zps8127245d.jpg

Funny, with great entertainment value if you love those alpha males who barely got out of the caves.

photo aroused_zpsbb7957b8.gif As I said to a friend; “Can not resist this, almost corny but so entertaining nonetheless. It will probably be more books in this series.”
photo aroused_zpsbb7957b8.gif Or to some lovely ladies who also like some "sex-filth” in our romances; “You are so right girls! Let's be dirty girls and read even more of these always so funny wonderful smut books. They always cheer up your everyday life.”

I LIKE - Oh yes, much smut fun for the money!

4 Stars! Surprised at how much I enjoyed it!

I know some reviewers compare this series to another one with a similar concept, but since I haven't read that one, I can't make the comparison. So, it was unlike anything I've read, and I rather enjoyed Fury. Lots of alpha posturing, but a pretty engaging plot with a likeable hero and heroine.

I listened to the audiobook and Vanessa Chambers does a stand out job narrating. This is a steamy one kids, so I wouldn't suggest driving, slicing and dicing, operating power equipment, or doing anything that requires your undivided attention. You might end up on that show Sex Sent Me To The ER...only it's fictional characters in a book that are having it, not you, and it might be rather embarrassing to explain!

Re read via audible. I liked Fury more this go around. Probably because I know what is coming and do not get so frustrated by his behavior and her acquiescence to it all. She was still too much of a martyr but I got how he had no clue what was going on since this was the first New Species/human relationship.

Prior comments:

I liked Fury and the world LD built. It got me interested in more. Once they were past their issues, he and Elllie were great together. Lots of action, conflict and tons of sex.

4+ I was really shocked how much I liked this book only because I was nervous that it wouldn't have what I was looking for but it really delivered. Im highly sure i'll continue this series to see where things left off with the first book. It should be noted that each book is a different couple but it seems to show that there all connected so I would fully suggest reading them in order to get backstory.

I enjoyed the opening book to the New Species series more than expected. Fury and Ellie meet under extreme circumstances as she saves him from a violent rape and death by a coworker.

description

Unfortunately she is forced to frame Fury for her actions because she is on a classified mission. Months later, Ellie meets Fury again as a free man but he feels that she owes him payment for her betrayal. His plans for retribution are misguided but he is a man obsessed!

description

New Species are now free but they still living in fear. I kinda got tired of other New Species males treating Fury as if he would harm Ellie. I hated that they would doubt him even when Ellie had faith that Fury would never cause her harm. I loved some of the characters I met in Fury's book and look forward to reading their HEA's.

This series is similar to Lora Leigh's Breed series but I would never go as far as to say it's a copy. There are similarities just as Lara Adrian's "Breed" series is similar to J.R. Ward's "Black Dagger Brothers" series. I would never presume to say that that one author has plagiarized another. And I hate to see other readers make this accusation in relation to this series. Besides LL wasn't the only writer to write about humans mixed with animal DNA. The Island of Dr. Moreau by H.G. Wells is a tale of humans mixed with animal DNA to make humans smarter.

Fury by Laurann Dohner
Genres: Adult, Romance, Sci-Fi, Suspense. Debating on 'Fantasy'
3.5 Stars

I saw a lot of my friends loved this one. I didn't.
For numerous reasons.
I got my copy from my digital library. It quickly became apparent it is a Very Old copy!
There was no table of contents nor 'About This Book' in my kindle copy.
So navigation was impossible.
There were numerous and assorted editing errors.
There was an overabundance of repetition that almost had me dnf'ing many times.
There were times the dialog and actions were juvenile and cheesy.
There was many times the writing became Overly Wordy.
It ended very abruptly.
So I really had a hard time finishing this, but I was determined.

With all those negatives I will say it was an interesting premise.
There was a lot of action and suspense.
The main characters could have been better, but they did have my attention.
Most of the intimate scenes were adult and steamy.
I did connect to them somewhat, just not to a point that it really 'Moved' me.
The world build was interesting.
There were other side characters that were also very interesting and helped me connect more to the story.

I will probably read the next story in this series, but not anytime soon.
I just hope when I do that my library copy is the updated version!

I feel like I should be offended on Lora Leigh's behalf. This is so INCREDIBLY similar to her Breed series it borders on plagiarism, at least in my opinion. I wasn't impressed with the writing or the story and absolutely hated both lead characters. Won't be reading anymore in this series.

PopSugar 2018: 38.
