4⭐
Genre ~ psychological thriller
Publication date ~ November 1, 2022
Page Count ~ 334
Audio length ~ 9 hours 42 minutes
Narrator ~ Rose Robinson
POV ~ dual 3rd
Featuring ~ 2 part story, secrets, references to r@pe

Allison & Peter were only married a short time when he turns up dead. Luckily her good pal, Portia, is around to pour her prosecco to help her through her grief. I mean she is a grieving widow, right?

And then there's Jo who is trying to befriend her, but Allison is not really feeling it. Soon, though, we're seeing through Jo's POV that she has an ulterior motive for seeking out this friendship and that turned out to be a nice twist.

Overall, I found this to be fast paced and I was kept engaged throughout. I probably shouldn't, but I liked all the unlikable characters, except one creepster. I'm not too sure how I feel about the ending, though.

I was able to listen to an audio copy as well.
Narration notes ~ she did a fine job.

What a mess has Allison in her life!!!

Everything happens not as planned. All people around her are lying or pretending to be someone else. And everyone has a secret to tell.

The book is full of twists and unexpected events and keeps the reader turning pages. We start to guess how would Allison get out of all this. The final is also very unexpected.

A warped psychological tale!

In Ms. Keogh’s latest thriller, we’re introduced to Allison who appears to be an ordinary accountant. However, when she meets Peter, a wealthy lawyer, she decides to spice up her appearance and evolve into the woman he longs to marry. But secrets surrounding her childhood are kept hidden from everyone and Peter is no different.

After just a few months of marriage, Peter is killed in a terrible accident and we are taken down a rabbit hole of chilling twists! I was blown away as the horrific secrets of Allison’s past are slowly revealed. Complicated characters make for one warped psychological tale!

Sincere thanks to the publisher for providing an advanced reading copy through Netgalley. All opinions are my own.

Wow.
I've read Valerie Keogh's books before, and enjoyed them.
But this book... its something else entirely
Wow. It starts off really well, enticing the reader into the story But as the story moves on, it takes you somewhere you just couldn't have foreseen.
The plot is so fast-paced, you fly through it. The twists are unreal.
Fascinating characters really helps this book appeal to every thriller reader. There's the character development as well as the gripping plot.
Amazing.

The Widow by Valerie Keogh

Allison and Peter have been married three months. It is a wonderful marriage... or is it? When Peter turns up dead, Allison knows she must control her emotions. She has a dark secret and must keep her past hidden during the investigation of Peter's death. This may not prove to be an easy task.

Valerie Keogh's brand new book The Widow focuses on Allison, an intricate character with a shocking past. Keogh's perception of Allison's mental state creates a delicious emphasis on conflict and mind-bending tension. Allison's social circle is revealed for a thrilling read with intriguing plot twists.

The Widow is Valerie Keogh's twenty second novel. The best-selling author's career as a registered nurse recently ended so she could focus on her writing career. This is my second book by this mega talented writer. Valerie Keogh always delivers for psychological thriller fans.

The Widow is available on November 1st.

Thank you, NetGalley, Boldwood Books, Valerie Keogh, and Rachel's Random Resources for sharing this outstanding book with me.

An outstandingly dark and chilling psychological thriller….centring around Allison, a lady with a wicked past, her new husband Peter and Jo, a seemingly harmless ‘new friend’ she has made via Facebook reading groups….all 3 have things to hide and all of them have secrets they want to remain hidden….
The main characters are powerful, they evoked reactions in me as I was reading the story, ranging from horrified dislike to outrage, disbelief at their audacity and often I was horrified at their actions…brilliantly crafted characters who did not once let up throughout the story…..it would be impossible to read this book and NOT have a strong feelings/opinion on them
The story itself is fast paced, enjoyable in its shockability………I was hooked right from the go…..and it kept me there to the very last sentence
This is a book that will be hard to forget character and plot wise and would be a great TV 6 parter! Loved it

This is my first book by Valerie Keogh and oh did I ever enjoy it!!!! A very dark twisty psychological thriller that just kept surprising me with each and every chapter. So many twists thrown in, I felt like I have whiplash. Alison and Peter were only married for 3 months when Peter turns up dead. Alison has a past that no one knows about and she is able to hide all of it for many many years. I can’t wait to read all of Valerie’s other books!! Thanks to NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this early release in exchange for my early review. To be published November 1, 2022.

Another thrilling novel from Keogh, reading this book was like putting on a pan of water to boil. It starts off slowly, but then gathers momentum and energy before spilling over at boiling point. Although I thought the book took a while to get going, I really enjoyed the thrills and revelations in this narrative.

When the Widow is first introduced, you know there is something amiss with Allison’s character. She is portrayed as manipulative and calculating, which is reinforced by her attitude towards Peter. Dissatisfied with her life, she sees Peter as the opportunity to get more, even if she has to compromise her true feelings. The news of his sudden death causes Allison’s world to turn upside down and, even though she knew she was never completely honest with her husband, it would seem there were even more secrets being kept from her.

With the arrival of Jo, Allison can no longer vouch for her own security. Jo seems to know more about Allison than she realises and becomes a burden. On the other hand, Keogh switches the narrative perspective to indicate to readers that Jo is also hiding secrets and has an obsession with Allison. Keogh does not reveal the motives behind Jo’s behaviour, but it is pretty clear there is something sinister going on with both women.

I loved the revelations that Keogh kept throwing into the narrative, making it an unpredictable read at all times. Whilst I had guessed some of the plot developments, this was not enough to lose my attention and there were plenty of times where I found myself gasping out loud in disbelief. The escape scene was pretty intense and I could not turn the pages quick enough because the atmosphere was so thick. This is when Keogh’s writing really came to play and shows just how much of a brilliant writer she is.

The ending was a surprise… and by ‘ending’, I mean the very final paragraphs. I had thought the story would conclude in a different way but I think the open-endedness added to the power of the conclusion. It was more haunting and I relished in the uncertainty that was portrayed. It reflected the nature of the book itself where trust can never be guaranteed.

Another enjoyable read from Keogh that I could not put down. Aided by such short chapters, this was a pacey thriller that kept me intrigued until the very end.

With thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Book Title: The Widow
Author: Valeria Keogh
Publisher: Boldwood Books
Genre: Psychological Thriller
Pub Date: November 1, 2022
My Rating: 💥💥💥💥+ Stars

When Sherri my Reading BFF suggested this dark chilling psychological thriller, I was excited as we have similar taste in books and hurried to get it.

Allison and Peter have been married for only three months and have a picture perfect wonderful marriage.
When handsome and wealthy Peter is found dead, Allison is devastated or is she?
Note comment on cover~ Grieving or Guilty?

It appears their marriage is built on secrets.
Story centers on both Peter and Allison but also Jo a Facebook “new friend” met on a FB Reading Group. Also Petra an older woman Allison befriends at Yoga.

Story is definitely gripping and twisty. While Allison is trying to keep her past hidden, I am trying to figure out who is who and what is what! Certainly kept me guessing!
Loved the ending

This is my first Valerie Keogh; definitely will read another ~in fact, just downloaded The Lodger.

Want to thank NetGalley and Boldwood Books for this this early eGalley.
Publishing Release Date scheduled for November 1, 2022.

Audiobook. Oh, but how I wish I were a British author so that when my new book comes out on audio it can be narrated by Rose Robinson. Her talents most certainly helped heighten the mystery in this simple yet ultimately entertaining novel.

In spite of the editorial mistakes (oft-repeated wording), timeline miscalculations (something that never could have happened in a certain timeframe) and a few hard-to-swallow behaviours (in particular: Allison's need for a shower at one point was confoundingly idiotic), I sped through this without once wishing I could be doing something else.

The fact that the reveals/twists were not as OTT as one would come to expect in this genre made me enjoy the book that much more.

This is my first novel by Ms. Keogh and I shall indeed read more by her.

After only 3 months of marriage, Allison's *wealthy* husband is dead after falling (or being pushed) in front of a train.
Poor Allison! They were still in their honeymoon phase and now she has to face being a young widow without the love of her life by her side. But is she really grieving? Or is she taking this as a chance to live the life she's always dreamed of?
Unfortunately for Allison, her husband's death is the only thing she has to worry about. Allison has a very dark past...one that someone seems to know about. And that someone is ready to seek vengeance and ruin Allison's one chance at happiness.

This was a fun read full of untrustworthy characters with sordid motives. The three main women in this book were all so manipulative and deceitful, which was a delight to read.

This story, however, was overly long and could have done with an edit. But the main reason I'm giving this book 3 stars is because all the twists were predictable. I'm fine with that if they're done well but that coupled with it being too long and drawn out made the book feel tedious to get through.

Valerie Keogh's latest, THE WIDOW, is a wicked dangerous game of cat and mouse psychological thriller with unreliable characters and a final evil twist.

Is the widow GRIEVING OR GUILTY?

I enjoyed the audiobook narrated by Rose Robinson for an intense, suspenseful, and fast-paced listening experience for all voices.

Allison was not a very nice child. She was a monster.

She did not have a happy home life and was jealous of everyone around her that seemed to have a perfect life. At nine years old, she took matters into her own hands to get rid of her parents, thinking she would find nice new parents to take their place.

Of course, that did not happen.

Now, struggling with low self-esteem and barely getting by, she has not learned her lesson. She is an accountant working for a B-List firm and has few friends. She wants a big house, designer clothes, and money.

When she meets the older, more glamorous woman with an even older husband she wonders if she could marry a rich man for his money. She loves their home, but then she gets bad vibes around Portia's husband. He seems very controlling.

Then Allison meets Peter. No one knows her dark secrets of the past.

A handsome man, but he is not quite as rich as she hoped, but he has a lovely mansion and is an attorney. They begin dating and soon get married. She envisions having the house and everything she has always wanted.

Then this mysterious woman Jo shows up and wants to befriend her. Jo is strange, and how does this woman know her? She seems to know about her past. But how?

Then Peter has an accident. He is dead. She has always thought about killing him but did she push him, an accident, or suicide? She can play the grieving widow.

She soon learns after his death, Peter had secrets too. The house was not in his name, nor did he have money. She realizes she misses him.

Soon after the death, while she pretends to grieve, Jo shows up. There is blackmail. Then Portia and her husband are involved in a twisted game that makes her untrustworthy.

Will Jo come to her rescue, or will Allison continue to be the same manipulative monster she has always been?

Wow! There were no likable characters here. From greed, obsession, lies, deceit, and murder. Everyone is hiding something.

I stayed glued to my AirPods, desperate to know how the dangerous secrets of three complex, compelling women (and two men) would finally collide—never prepared for the final wicked twist, satisfying ending.

THE WIDOW is my second book by the author—I enjoyed The Lodger and decided to give this one a whirl.

The multi-layered story and the author's deep dive into Allison's mental state keep you in suspense, as well as the secondary characters of Jo, Portia, and Peter. I was drawn in by the front cover and purchased the audiobook.

That was an interesting roller coaster ride. Hard to tell who’s a good guy and who’s a bad one. Every character comes across as innocent at one point and possibly evil as hell in other parts. Which one takes the cake though? The Widow? The one and only Friend? The Husband? Or the New Best Friend? This made for a really good read that I would recommend to any thriller lover. Especially good as it was free on Prime lol

Yet another outstanding psycological thriller from Valerie Keog. Allison marries millionaire husband Peter after a whirlwind romance. Months later he has a tragic accident and sadly dies. Allison appears to be a devastated widow but she a past of secrets and lies. Unfortunatley for her so does Peter! A gripping page turner full of twists.

This is a great psychological thriller.
Allison has had a troubled past and is on the look out for a rich man to make her life better.
After just three months of being married, Peter dies and Allison contacts the solicitors to find out what she will be getting.
Allison is left very disappointed but this is the least of her problems.
Jo has befriended Allison but has other things in mind rather than friendship.
There’s also another threat to Allison which I won’t spoil as this took me by complete surprise.
This is a gripping thriller that will definitely keep you turning the pages.
Thanks to Boldwood books and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.

Shocked to see all these 4 & 5 star reviews! This book was hardly a "thriller," the pace was plodding, there were too many bad guys (none convincing,) & I didn't feel one second of suspense or anticipation. A boring, poorly written book.

I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. Initially, I thought it would be a straightforward, predictable read, but it turned out to have unexpected twists and turns that kept me engaged.

The main character's troubled childhood evoked sympathy, but her unlikable adult persona made it difficult to fully empathise with her.
Having said that her loneliness and lack of genuine connections made me feel for her. She didn't have many people and the people she does have aren't who they say they are.

One issue I've noticed is the excessive portrayal of alcohol consumption. I mean, I love a G&T as much as the next person but do these people ever drink water or soft drinks?! They must all have major alcohol issues!

Despite the obvious alcohol addiction and the fact that some parts of the story was really far-fetched I still really liked it. It was tense with lots of twists and turns and I really loved the ending.

This was my first time reading a book by this author, and I'm eager to explore more of their work in the future.

I absolutely love this authors books and know that when I have one of her books to read nothing else will get done as I won’t be able to put it down. This book was perfect to read whilst recovering from illness as had me completely hooked from the very first page and Immersed in the story. I read this in one sitting as couldn’t put it down and still thinking about it even now. This book is hard to review as I don’t want to give any spoilers away.

This was a rollercoaster of a read and a domestic thriller that had me gripping the edge of my seat as it took me through the journey of twists and turns shocks and surprises and revelations that make you question do you really know who anyone really is? can we trust our friends and partners to be who they say they are and take people at face value.

This was a unique story with a brilliant and engaging plot and fantastic characters that with the authors writing enabled you to visualise them and their actions jumped off the page as the story unfolded.

This would make an excellent tv drama adaptation. I am already eagerly anticipating this authors next book

Brilliantly Amazing....................

Valerie Keogh with her new book The Widow hits the right mark for the mystery lovers. The readers are going to just keep guessing what happens next, but the author has something else in her mind. With just five characters in the whole story, the plot is spun like a web. And the characters come across each other's lives brilliantly. As a reader, you are going to enjoy a rollercoaster ride with these characters. The twists and turns are utterly brilliant, keeping you in awe. But, truly my words fall short for the praise.

Definitely 5 stars for the book, although it looks too less. Thanks to Netgalley and Rachel's Random Resources for providing me an opportunity to read and review the book.

This was one of those books that I knew what was going to happen, but I continued to read it to find out how it happened. We know from the beginning that the main character Allison is a horrible person. We know she burned her home and family. We know she killed her husband. We know she wants money. I personally knew from the beginning that Jo was her sister. To me it was obvious but I wanted to read on to find out why and how she did what she did. Only part shocking to me was the Portia and Stuart portion. When she was kidnapped by them was when I truly got invested in the story. Then that story line really kinda petered out in my opinion. It wasn’t as big of a deal as I had expected. The only part that surprised me is that Allison doesn’t kill Jo/Beth in the end like I thought she would. Sometimes the monsters don’t always win.

I really liked this thriller. I was hooked from the beginning. It’s short chapters, easy to read with a fast-paced plot. I guessed some things along the way but there was still quite a bit that I did not see coming and for that, I enjoyed it! 4.5/5 ⭐️

Oh, my days I was not expecting this for a book!!!

It was a dark book to start with and then a little side twist and another twist and an intense end. Oh my days!

Gosh, I don’t know how, where, or when to start with this one!! I mean I am not going to say a thing about the book at all, because I have gone in completely blind and that’s the best way.

I really don’t know how I feel about the characters, any of them. I mean a couple of them, and I obviously hate them, detest them! However a couple I was indifferent to some. I mean you don’t have to like characters for them for the book to be epic. This is very clearly that book.

I was just hooked on this book, I was listening to the audiobook and flicking back to the book. It was so addictive to read. I just didn’t want to put it down or stop listening to it.

I was forever trying to figure out what the heck was going on. I guessed one small thing but wow didn’t see some of it come at all completely left field. That made it an even more entrancing read.

I can’t wait for the next crazy, addictive read by Valerie. Just glad I got to read this one!
