Both Feet in the Grave by Jeaniene Frost
Night Huntress #8. Aka #2.5 IMO, One Foot in the Grave from Bones POV. Vampire stories with romance.
It’s taken Bones four long years to find Cat. While searching, he also accepted kill orders where she was the target. Of course, he went after the payer rather than Cat, because he can’t have anyone actually harm her! And he has to convince his own maker that Cat shouldn’t be ended. Bones has quite a task list to keep Cat alive.
I absolutely love reading Bones POV. We were told he loved Cat. But he also beat her to unconsciousness during training! Yes I have a hard time getting over those scenes from book 1. After listening to the two books in his POV, I am so happy or actually feel his love.
🎧 I listened to the story by audiobook narrated by Will Watt. His performance is phenomenal. His voice and accent is exactly what I would want to bring Bones to life. The emotions, the timing, the way the various voices are produced, all factor into believing that Bones really does care for Cat.
The underwear stalking discussion was hilarious. Even Bones couldn’t keep his laughter contained.

I started out listening to the audiobook and I kind of wish I had more patience because the narrator was great. It was the prefect voice for Bones, but I read a lot faster than I listen and I hit the point about a third of the way in where I couldn’t wait for more. And while I’ve read the companion book of Cat’s I will admit I don’t remember every detail and this was like getting to experience one of my favorite couples all over again. I like that the books are modernized a little bit, it helps to get lost in the story when the technology matches current day. Bones is determined to find Cat. He knows she left to protect him and he’s determined to prove to her just how wrong she was. But in his search he discovers several dangers pointed at Cat which only make him more determined.

I loved this book! I have been a huge fan of this series for a very long time. I have read the original books in the series twice so I know the story. I had no idea how much I needed Bones’s point of view. But apparently, I did. I started this book in the afternoon and did not put it down. I clung to every word because even though I already knew the story, I didn’t know how Bones saw things.
I would recommend reading this series in order. This is the second book from Bones’s point of view which mirrors One Foot in the Grave which is the same basic story but from Cat’s perspective. At the start of the book, Cat and Bones are apart and I had assumed that it was a tough time for both of them but actually seeing what Bones was going through broke my heart a bit. There were some pretty exciting scenes and I loved seeing just what Bones thought during some pivotal moments.
Will Watt did an amazing job with the audiobook. I think that his voice suits Bones’s character perfectly and I loved how he was able to bring this story to life. I thought that his voice was very pleasant and he added the perfect about of emotion to his reading. This is an audiobook that I know I will be listening to again in the not-so-distant future. I am positive that his narration added to my overall enjoyment of the story.
I would highly recommend this book to others. I loved getting to see a story that I already love from a different perspective. I had such a great time getting to spend a few hours with characters that I have loved for years. I cannot wait to read more of Jeaniene Frost’s work.

No substitute for the original book but still fun. Both Feet in the Grave doesn't really deliver what the experience I would want reading Bones's POV. Sure, I enjoyed it, but that's because I love One Foot in the Grave.
Bones's recollections did give me a lot more compassion for Annette. I didn't appreciate before how emotionally intense their relationship was, it was kind of devastating. I almost want to read that story; it made me sad it didn't work out for them. At the very least, this book fleshed out Annette more than just being "the other woman."
Not to mention, Bones and Justina's hostile interactions were absolutely hilarious.
Unfortunately, and I hate to say it, but I actually didn't like the expanded love scene!That was one of my favorite scenes in OFITG and honestly it was better in my head/just from Cat's description. I kind of wish I hadn't read this version.
Like The Other Half of the Grave, Both Feet in the Grave is fine. It stays true to the characters, is faithful to its Night Huntress counterpart, doesn't disgrace the series. I’m greatly enjoying this way of revisiting characters that are truly entertaining. Getting the story of Cat and Bones from his point of view certainly adds a lot as you begin to realise just how much Bones actually feels for Cat. Yes he’s possessive of her but we learn of his struggle not to lose her trust and love for him as he lets her go her own way , well as long as he’s with her that is ! Being reunited with Cat brings Bones joy but it’s also deeply distressing for him as to lose her again would destroy him. Problem is there’s someone who has put a target on her back and this time it’s personal !

Both Feet in the Grave is the second book from Bones' POV and all I can say is please give us more. This book was fantastic from beginning to end. Ms. Frost wrote this book in a way that was familiar but still fresh. While it was always clear that Bones was possessive when it came to Cat, his obsessive search of her that even had him at odds with Spade just spoke of his love for her. There is really nothing about this book that wasn't perfect in my opinion. Although as I was reading all I could think about was how I would just love to know what Bones was going through while Cat was with Max in book 3 or even his loss of control with Cat and Gregor in book 4, which has made me cry every time I've read it. Overall, this was another great addition to this series.

Both Feet in the Grave is another completely inessential addition to the Night Huntress universe. By design, it sort of has to be. Not only is Bones the deuteragonist of the original series, but his relationship with Cat, our viewpoint, is pathologically codependent and possessive. In narrative terms, that means they spend next to no time apart.
Except for in One Foot in the Grave that is. The first book ends with Cat leaving Bones in a bid to save his life, and as a consequence they don't see each other for four years. Of all the choices Frost made in the series, this is probably her smartest. It gave time for Cat to be her own person and cultivate a life outside of her mother and Bones: two incredibly domineering personalities. While I'm disappointed with how paltry that life is, its something, and it made their relationship going forward a lot more palatable.
The tweaks and overt changes from the original book aren't as glaring this time around. Or my memory isn't so great. Also, Frost has dialed down the pop culture references. I can't recall a single one, actually.
With the four years both of them spent apart largely detailed within the original series, there weren't many revelations to uncover from another retelling. It did give Frost a chance to retcon a few things.
When it was published in 2008, it was just another abhorrent example of cultural insensitivity from a white author. Its been over a decade, and while its nice to know Frost has absorbed some critique of this depiction, this is not the way to rectify it.
The idea of a minority playing into stereotypes to make themselves more "acceptable" to white people is complicated territory that requires more than a single line of text to do justice. But then to have the character say they play into the stereotype so they can "get away" with things like sexual harassment (because that is Juan's major contribution in the text and biggest issue overall), well, somehow you've taken it to another level of offensive.
The other retcon is Bones mesmerizing Cat's insane mother, Justina, to be a better parent to Cat. Justina has always been a strange character because of the way the books handled her. Her fanatical hatred of vampires is understandable. She was raped by one (we'll get back to that) and Cat is a product of that rape. She then passed down her prejudices to Cat and happily allowed her daughter to risk her life hunting them. Her eventual change in attitude is abrupt on account of the story not willing to give the arc the time it needed, but this retcon smooths over a few wrinkles.
At the end of the book, one of the few things Max (her father) does say is that he didn't rape her mother. That the sex was consensual but once she saw his eyes and fangs, she screamed and bawled and he then, without her consent, fed on her and sent her on her way thinking he was a demon.
Taking that step by step, we have Frost giving time to the rarest of occurrences: false rape accusations. Then we have a clear-cut instance of Max admitting to forcing himself on her when biting her, and that gets zero condemnation. Why? Because Bones would be guilty of that. We're supposed to believe the mitigating circumstances are the fact his venom can make the bite pleasurable and his gaze can erase someone's memory of being bitten, but that's just the supernatural equivalent of GHB.
And that's why you shouldn't skip down that rabbit hole if you're not willing to examine it fully.
Beyond all of that, with this book I was looking for a greater exploration of Bones' turmoil and loneliness during their time apart. What we got was perfunctory. I got the sense that Frost just wanted to get to her favourite bits from the book, and I can understand that impulse, and I'm sure most readers will be right there with her — but if I'm going to read this story again, with the selling point that its from Bones' perspective, it might be worthwhile to invest in his emotional state more.
In One Foot in the Grave, Cat's devastation anchored the first hundred pages and informed the rest. Frost has a habit of sidestepping Bones' feeling by saying he simply "iced" them over or some variation of that. He wouldn't have survived this long to become a master if he didn't have that skill. I get it. That's fine, but now that I'm in his head, a little thawing wouldn't go amiss. This means that once we do get our reunion, it's not half as powerful as it could be — or as dramatic as it was when it was Cat we were following.
Outside of that, the story of Bones and Cat navigating the competing loyalties of vampire feudalism is just as riveting as ever. Which, to be clear, isn't much at all. Cat wants to kill her father, who was sired by Ian, whose obsessed with Cat over her half-vampire status and also sired Bones, so Bones goes above his head to keep Cat for himself. It's not that this couldn't be interesting, it's just that the key players need to actually show up more than once or twice for me to care about the game at play.
This series has exactly two decent antagonists, and that's relative to the slop we usually get. The story usually goes: bad thing happens, this bad guy is doing it, Bones and Cat meet and speak to bad guy all of two seconds before they are dead. It's honestly been a recurring issue with a lot of the books I've read lately. Incorporating antagonists in your stories better should be a priority; that feels like common sense.
I didn't have as much fun with Both Feet in the Grave as I did the last book, but that might have something to do with the novelty wearing off. Its still notably better than the original book told from Cat's perspective, but not enough to make the experience feel fresh.

The Night Huntress Series by Jeanine Frost has been my favorite series since 2008. Even when I stopped reading vampire books, this was one series I continued. The original series is told from half-vampire Cat Crawfield’s POV. Both Feet in the Grave is a modernized retelling of the second book in the series, One Foot In The Grave, from Bones’s POV. I loved the first retelling, The Other Half of the Grave, so I had high expectations for this one, and it lived up to it!

All of the excitement, humor, action and romance of the series is there, and if it’s even possible, I love Bones more! I never felt like I was reading a repeat of the original book. It was a whole different perspective of all the events that happened, and lots of new information. I can easily say I love it just as much this way as I loved the original.
While Bones seemed so suave and experienced in the originals, you get to see how much he loved Cat and how protective he felt of her. We also get to see when he screws up! The famous chapter 32 was there as well. It was still hot, but it was way hotter in the original. That’s literally the only slight negative I had about Both Feet In The Grave. But honestly, not much can live up to the original!
It would have been easy to disappoint fans when retelling such a beloved series, but let me tell you, Jeaniene Frost has made these retellings just as good as the originals from Cat’s point of view. I so hope she continues telling these from Bones’s POV.
Both Feet In The Grave is the second book Jeaniene has written in the male POV. While I think you can start reading it this way, I would read the series in order the way it was published. If you haven’t read this series at all, I want to say take your time and savor it, but these books are very quick-reading and unputdownable, so I think that would be impossible!
I read very little fantasy or paranormal nowadays, but let me tell you, Jeaniene Frost’s entire Night Huntress Series and all its spinoffs would be my number one recommendation.

Will Watt narrated as Bones and he was just perfect. His voice will always be Bones to me now.

I was looking forward to this one as this series is a favorite of mine. I didn't realize it was basically an earlier book, just from Bone's point of view. It was ok, but felt more like a re-read than anything. You knew what was going to happen, what was coming, when I was hoping for new adventures. I guess I should have read the blurb, would have gone in with different expectations, but the author is an auto read for me and I tend not to read blurbs for my auto read authors.

I absolutely LOVE that we get to experience the Night Huntress series from Bones' POV. In a way, it's like coming home because everything is so familiar and wonderful, but it also feels so new and fresh because the way Bones sees and experiences the world is so different from Cat.
As it was with One Foot in the Grave, in Both Feet in the Grave we kick off our story with the same angst fest we got with Cat... only seeing just how much Bones suffers in her absence tore me apart in ways I hadn't expected. But it also shed a different kind of light on his reunion with Cat and all that transpired after. I found the similarities and differences in their mutual experiences just so fascinating, and knowing how Cat feels in the moment as Bones is left to wonder... the whole experience is just so rich and wonderful.
I think the main things to note that were strikingly different for me (outside of the extra non-Cat scenes and getting to obviously see things from Bones' perspective) were the new light we get on Bones' relationship with Anette, that one infamous scene featuring orgasmic bites and a broken bed that was even better from his POV, and Both Feet really drives home just how bloody amazing Bones is.
The man has amazing self-control and discipline all things considered, and while you could sense that in the earlier books when everything was from Cat's perspective, it becomes so much more stark this time around. He struggles with his own moments of jealousy, pettiness, insecurity, and general frustration, of course, but he also always seems to know when to push Cat and when to be patient with her, and if anything, these last two books from his perspective just made me love the man even more than I already did. I have such a greater appreciation for him. He really is one of the best PNR MMCs ever - I said what I said.
There's not much else to comment on. If you've read One Foot in the Grave, then there should be no real surprises for you in Both Feet as far as story beats go... just extra context and insight into the man that would literally go to any lengths for the woman he loves... and I am absolutely obsessed.
Can't wait to see what Jeaniene reveals next with his character, assuming we get At Grave's End from Bones' POV next! I am more invested than ever!

I love this book for all the angst and the infamous chapter but it was especially amazing getting it from Bones' POV. You can definitely feel all the love he has for Cat and all his anguish. Ugh...it hurt so good.
I read the original book somewhere around 2010 so I didn't have it fresh in my mind. However, it was crazy how much I remembered. I didn't feel that it was simply a rewrite.
I haven't found anything that says she is continuing with Bones' POV but how could she not?

As a fan of the series I have to say getting Bones' POV has been so refreshing. I am loving each instalment and can't wait to see the rest. 🙏🏻

I was thrilled to get an early copy of this book, which is the next book in the Night Huntress series, this time told in Bones’ own words. The story is very familiar, of course, but hearing it from the sexy Brit’s point-of-view gives it a totally new spin. First, before I go any further, I must admit how much I love these books and having read the entire series several times it never gets stale. The romance is HOT, the LOVE Bones has for his Kitten is swoon-worthy and the writing is laugh-out-loud FUNNY!
For those that don’t know, the series is about Cat and Bones; Cat being Catherine Crawfield, a 20-something woman who is half-woman, half-vampire resulting from her mother unknowingly sleeping with a newly formed vampire. Her mother raised her to hate vampires and she spends her nights stalking and staking the undead. Staking, meaning killing them. She is quite successful until she runs into Bones, the gorgeous 200-year-old master vampire who is so impressed by her audacity that he kidnaps her and convinces her to go into partnership with him.
Bones puts Cat through a vigorous training routine and as a result of spending so much time together, she soon realizes that not all vampires are evil. And of course, as a result, they end up in a powerful relationship. Cat fights it at first because she knows her mother will go crazy when she finds out, but Bones has found the ONE and he is not giving up.
I was lucky enough to listen to the audiobook which is always fun in this series (I own all the audiobooks for the earlier books) and the narrator, Will Watt is perfection! I fell right back into the series and was in love with his voice.
As I said, this book is told from Bones’ POV and I loved it almost as much as I did the first time I read the first book. I know this genre is not for everyone, in fact, paranormal is not something I often read. However, as a sixty-something woman who loves a good romance this ranks as one of my all-time favorite series. I recommend this book to everyone. If you are new to the series, you could start with this book and easily follow along, but you might also want to start with the first book, Halfway to the Grave.

I think I like Bone's take on these stories better than I like Kat's. And of course this book has the much beloved "chapter 38" (although I can't recall if it's the same chapter in this book or not).

I love re-reading my favorite books but re-reading a story from a different perspective? Knowing what will happen, but reading it knowing the thoughts and feelings of one of the main characters which previously had not been given? A whole new, thrilling experience! For years, I’ve wondered how Bones fared during those four years he and Cat were separated. At last, I have the answers now.
Reading the second book from Bones’ POV broke my heart. How he searched for Cat for years, the pain and despair when he couldn’t. And finding her again? The reconciliation and all the sacrifices he made just to be with her. I loved the faith he had in both of them, that they could beat all the odds if they were together.
Cat still annoys me with her recklessness but those moments when she puts him first tug at the heartstrings.
I read this book in one sitting. I just couldn’t stop. I wanted to keep reading. Right after I finished, I needed more of Bones so I re-read the 3rd Night Huntress book, At Grave’s End. I can’t wait to get Bones’ POV for the 3rd book!

Poor Noah, he could not compete against Bones. The end always brings emotion.

Loved visiting my old friend Bones. It has been awhile since I first read this series so visiting again but from Bones' Point of view has been refreshing and fun. I forgot how funny and demanding he is. I also forgot how UNLIKEABLE Ian was in the beginning of this series. I love that Frost is revisiting and giving us this story from Bones' view. Such a fun read. Loved it

Wow just wow! Hearing everything from Bones' point of view no words can express how happy to hear his tale. Seeing Cat through Bones' eyes was a real eye opener for me. It makes me want to reread the whole series again. I hope we get more glimpses into Bones' thoughts in the future. Until next time Happy Reading!
