I have considered Thea Harrison's Elder Races series a fine example of the way paranormal romance (PNR) should be written since the very first book, having devoured each and every offering in the series as "must read." I am not a huge romance fan and I need a well written story over and above the relationship to hold my interest, I need well done and, for the most part, plausible adult content and I need a well wrapped book arc with no marketing manipulation endings.
Until Night's Honor Thea Harrison was one of a short list of people who offered those very things.
If you do not like cliff hangers or endings that are overt and blatant attempts to sell you the next book then just stop reading Night's Honor at the last chapter, and avoid the Epilogue. Even at that you will have disproportionately more romance angst than non-relationship story. In truth the entire book felt a bit like a set up for the next book, an introduction to the politics of the Vampyre Demense, its heavy hitters, and what the conflicts are as well as the romance background of the next books' protagonists. But avoid the Epilogue if you don't want to close the book feeling like you slogged through 300 pages of teaser.
I wish I had.

Not bad, but it had a tough time holding my attention. It's a good premise but I suspect the reveals towards the end, which seem incidental, will be the lead in to making this a series. Even so, it's a stand alone story that has a different approach to what is becoming stereotypical fare with supernatural subject matter. The primary protagonists are human, plain and simple, and the supes sort of happen around them. As expected, time travel is the primary supernatural focus. The love story was nice enough and there were some sexy times, but the male protag was difficult to like so it took me a long time to really care what happened to these two.
It's got potential. I will probably read the next one to see where it goes.

The whole "non-virgins are unclean" narrative leaves a bad taste in my mouth so I have difficulty when it's used as angst fodder. I am not empathet3.5

I am going to have to do a series reread, I think. I have no memory of Ravyn or Savhage or any of these people.
Good book all around. Although I have seen a few references to the Ilona Andrews Innkeeper series I have to say I don't really see too much comparisonGood book all around. I liked the male MC character all the way back in book 1. I thought he was going to end up being the romantic interest then. I'm glad he got his own, and I'm glad the worst this female had to deal with growing up is abusive dysfunctional family dynamics and not outright physical torture and abuse.
I agree that the romance seemed to happen rather suddenly, or at least the bashful interest to "I'm in love with you" happened quickly. Even so, I probably would have whined if there had been more emphasis on angsting about whether or not he likes me drivel.
These are good clean paranormal romances, if you can stomach the level of dark they can get to....more
I rarely rate this high for a story with a teen MC but this is the best book in the series so far. This female lead ROCKS and I can totally unders4.5.

Other than the occasional grammatical issue that was mildly enough to disturb reading flow this was a significantly better than average torture porn romance. I liked it well enough to want to jump right into the next.
UPDATED: I just realized this is a PNR series so there will be different MCs with every book. I will NOT be jumping right into the next one but will eventually get around to it....more

The truth is that I didn't go audio with this series until after she "ended" it. I have enjoyed the subsequent shorts and stories and such in the world on audio. Perhaps I should do a series re-read with the audio. Hmmm.......more

The story hit my radar like dysfunction on parade and that never resolved for me even at its most functional.
I didn't give it a single star because those things ar entirely subjective preference. The book was otherwise competently written with identifiable characters, stated personal growth goals for several of the primary characters, and lots of sex.
But the lies that the entire story is predicated upon, and how quickly that was resolved, was distasteful to me, even in fiction.
That said, Auryn Hadley's Rise of the Iliri series is some of the best reverse harem I've ever read. It's fantasy that stands on its own. So I'm chalking this up to just not to my taste....more

I must admit that I like this author's writing. Her worlds are just original enough to be engaging and fresh while still feeling familiar.
I also must admit that, although I haven't read her entire catalog, its fair to say that I prefer her reverse harem stories. He handles the poly deftly and doesn't let the romance take away from the rest of the story, which is pretty reliably compelling fiction.
This is kind of a spin off series so I think I'm going to listen to the original series now and see how that goes....more
