i tried. i really tried but i caaaan't.
this has the same trope as Bully by Pen Douglas where h and H were childhood best friends but for some reason the H started to ignore her and become an asshole once high school starts. they're all seniors now and he's still an asshole to her.
it was going good but then (spoilers) h sees H in his backyard with OW where he has his hands inside her pants and was taking off her bra with his teeth and then a few moments later she heard him moan so we all know what the f they did. this is in chapter 6 and this OW bullies the h. and this is what the h has to say after seeing him with her enemy:
"I hate this fucking school. And I hate my fucking neighbor. I hate that I loved him so much even more."
oh my god bishhh. WHY?
also, she's a virgin. ughhh. i really hate when this trope is done where the H is a ho, sleeping with a lot of OW while claiming he has loved h this whole time and the h stays a virgin, pines, and loves the H while he's an asshole. i really hate that and that's what's happening here.
like, can i have a book where the H grovels for their dumbassery but then the h is like nah bishh it's time for YOU to taste your own medicine and shove their OM escapades on H's face? for once?? IS THAT TOO MUCH TO ASK??
also, i heard that his excuse was not that good and definitely makes his asshole and man ho behavior inexcusable and he doesn't break things off with the OW till like chapter 14 (yes, i spoiled myself). i would've liked this better if the H's pov was included here but nope.
maybe i'll read this later if im in the mood to torture myself but im so done with the double standard so yeah no thank you. byeeee...more

the blurb drew me in and this had potential but nahh.
spoilers ahead!!
the paragraph of the H in the very first chapter talking about how he hates girls who have lip fillers should've been my first warning:
"Ladies, we guys loved that you had a mouth in general. We daydreamed about the things we'd like to do it or put in it or having it wrapped around our dicks. But we never daydreamed about you making them bigger. If anything, we wished you'd stop. There was enough fake shit in this world; you didn't need to fill your face with it."
uhh... okay, dad?
i ignored that because i thought that was gonna be a one time thing so anyways, in the first chapter we get to read about how the H is NOT a ho because he rarely slept around. hmm ok. good for him. thank god we don't have another man ho H.
BUT THEN literally the next chapter, we get to find out that the h and H have been hooking up since freshman year while they were sleeping with OP (more so on H's side)... uhh well ok. well, the blurb was misleading then cuz i thought they were only friends or whatever and by then i was a little uncomfortable because i don't like it when the MCs are falling in love but they slept with OP. that's a me thing so, strike one
so there was a bit of a back and forth between them and how the H regrets hurting the h in the past all the time and strung her a long and how the h just went with it because she thought he would change and now she thinks she was pathetic that whole time blah blah blah. H sees h with his nemesis and gets jealous, finally realizes that he can actually play baseball AND have a girlfriend at the same time so he starts trying to win her back. and i was like ok maybe i can continue reading this if there's gonna be grovelling cuz that's my kryptonite but NOPE. we only got one grovelling scene from the H and the h was like ugh fine ok i won't let you work harder or grovel more because of my pride or something blah blah and with that, i dnf'ed.
how can you not let a man grovel some more when he repeatedly hurt you and pushed you away by sleeping with other girls and by choosing baseball over her all the damn time?? this happened for three years and realistically, that kind of pain don't just go away so quickly!
i absolutely hate heroines who KNOWS the heroes treated them badly but then forgives them right away! granted, the h here ignored the H for 7 months but once he actually started to grovel she was like aight whatever we'll be together. let's forget the past and think about the future. i don't like that so that's a strike two.
but what really nailed the coffin as to why i dnf'ed this is how the h complains about why girls have to be so petty, competitive, and bringing other girls down when she JUDGES girls for wearing false lashes, hair extensions, lip fillers, etc.
"They literally all looked exactly the same with blonde hair extensions, fake eyelashes, and filled lips. I felt like I was staring at a group of social media influencers who should be posing up against the pink wall in LA for likes and mentions, not sitting in the stands of a baseball game... I would never understand the fascination with looking as plastic as possible at such a young age..."
now, i happen to love wearing false lashes and some of my friends love hair extensions and this book made me feel ASHAMED for liking those because according to her, i am "plastic" and "fake". everyone in the new adult age range in real life happens to love wearing full-face makeup, lashes and all, so i still don't get why books treats makeup like the devil's work. the heroine just gave me "im not like other girls" vibes and i hate those heroines with a passion so strike three...

i really really REALLY don't like it when the H is dating this OW (and yes, they sleep together and the H implicitly/explicitly rubs it on h's face) the first half of the book while h pines (pathetically) for him.
some of the books i dislike (With Every Heartbeat & Heartland) have this trope and what made me hate them is because of said trope. like, i love romantic development so how can i believe the development between H and h if H spends half the time being with OW in the beginning and easily screwing her, disregarding h's feelings?
so, yeah, nope. the Chase Mattson cover fooled me. damn it
I actually liked the story in the first book cuz intrigued me but everything else infuriated me. So why am I reading the second book when I hatdnf 30%

15% in and I’m already bored... sorryyyy. I heard this has fake relationship trope and I love that trope but they already had sex first time they meet?? How can this book have fake relationship if they’re already intimate and have a semi-sexual relationship in their first meeting? This is the first book I’ve read that has the fake relationship trope where the MCs have sex first time they meet and have insta lust (and I hate this). Like, where’s the build up there? And the fact that what drew the H in to the h is that she looks like his dead ex-gf? Wtf... And let's not start with the h who already ONLY thinks about lustful shit when she's around the H. I really hate that. With their first encounter, I didn’t even root for them to be together yet and they already had sex? That’s a sign for me to stop reading sooo......more
