i breezed through this and couldn't stop thinking about it while i was away from it
the writing is haunting, absolutely beautiful but also totally gross and dark at the same time.
it's a story about family but also not, a story that has so many twists and turns you don't see coming and then an ending that makes sense but also breaks your heart
not going to forget about this one for a while...more

first of all, julia phillips, how dare you?
look this book is slowburn x a million and i understand it's hard to get into at first because you're constantly being introduced to so many characters and keeping them straight is very hard and you have no idea why they matter but they DO I PROMISE THEY DO
you would think this is a story of two young girls who got abducted but that's just the tip of the iceberg. this book follows a plethora of incredibly developed characters who are all connected to this tragedy
you don't know it at first, but the more you read, the stronger of a connection you build with this story and the characters and this chilling, isolating setting and then when that last chapter hits, it HITS YOU HARD AND YOU ARE FOUND CURLED INTO A FETAL POSITION CRYING AND YOU KNOW WHAT JULIA PHILLIPS DID AND IT HURTS
the only valid reaction to finishing this book: [image]
i know this book isn't for everyone and i accept your opinion but just know that it's a wrong opinion xoxo
if you're a fan of slow building, character driven stories that are a mix of thriller and realistic fiction like Miracle Creek or Station Eleven, i think you would love love love this book

lovers-to-enemies-to-lovers
I promise, it doesn’t get better than this
✨ everything I say in this review is 100% factual and based on science as I have reread the book and tried and tested all the theories ✨
You Deserve Each Other is the story of Naomi Westfield and Nicholas Rose, who are engaged to get married and the absolute perfect couple.
The problem is, they Cannot. Stand. Each. Other.
“He’s my only ally. He’s my worst enemy.
Naomi and Nicholas’s relationship has been dwindling down for quite some time. Naomi feels like she is acting all the time. Pretending that their relationship is Prefect!! That everything Couldn’t be Better!!
But as their wedding date approaches, she’s not so sure she can envision herself getting married to Nicholas anymore
In attempts to save herself from having to pick up the massive, growing wedding bill, Naomi concocts a plan to make Nicholas’s life an absolute nightmare until he finally gives in and breaks up with her
Little does she know, her acting skills aren’t that great and Nicholas has other plans in mind
“But I've got news for Nicholas Benjamin Rose: if he thinks I'm not the biggest waste of time that's ever happened to him, he's got another think coming.”
The Relationship
My new favourite favourite favourite thing to read about is couples who have to fight for each other. (bring those recommendations onnnnn!!) We all love seeing the beginning of a relationship where everything is happy and cutesy and fun, but after the couple gets together, the book ends and we get a stamp that says they live happily ever after
But I don’t want that
I want to see the real stuff, the couples who fight and argue and annoy each other and then find a way to make it right because to me, that’s just SO REAL and GENIUNE and SPECIAL
Seeing two people get together is fun but seeing two people fight to stay together is Magical
“Your body’s here, but your head’s somewhere else. You’ve gone and left me all alone.”
Don’t get me wrong, this book is lighthearted for the most part.
It’s filled with jokes and banter and characters who do outrageous things. But my favourite thing to find upon reread was how the characters went from working so hard to break their relationship to genuinely trying to make it work
And seeing those vulnerable moments where they allowed the barriers to come down and stopped all the stupid pranking and bickering to just TELL the other person how they feel and what they want
SO BEAUTIFUL YOU GUYS, SO BEAUTIFUL
“He shouldn’t be this stunned by a nice gesture. It should be a given, but it’s not, and that’s my fault. I’ve been withholding nice gestures to punish him for not giving me enough nice gestures, and just look at how well that attitude’s panned out for us.”
aaaaaaaaaaa emotions!!!!!!
And then there’s the really adorable, really sweet moment that have me ...more

@ author, please let me know where i can send the bills for the therapy that i now need
i get this deep ache in my chest every time i think about this book
the profound emotions of timeless love and loss and grief and missed chances and forgiveness punched me in the throat and i'm still not over it omg can someone make it STOP HURTING
the Stationery Shop is the story of a teenage girl in tehran during 1953 just before the iranian coup and the whirlwind romance she experiences with a boy (who is going to change the world) she meets in a small, cozy stationery shop.
from the beginning of the story, we know the time they have together is numbered and yet you cannot stop yourself from getting swept up in the love and passion and adoration they share
the aspects of iranian culture are history are so seamlessly entwined in the story. it's like you've entered a time machine and gone back to experience life with these characters during this time. it's not so much a commentary on the iranian coup, but more just a reconstruction of historic events and how life changing they were for the people in that time
i am so attached to the characters aaaaaaaaaaa
the author has a way of being so real and honest with the reader about these characters. she's able to grab that special aspect of human interaction and vulnerability and put it into words and give you a glimpse of something so personal and precious.
something like making a favourite childhood meal with someone left me with so much yearning jfkldjfkla my goodness it's just SO, SO, SO GOOD
there are so many subtle hints that the author leaves for the reader to piece together and theyre left in such a clever and brilliant way that when they do come together, you're left breathless and shaken
the parallels between the lives of the characters are truly incredible. in some ways the main couple of the story are doomed to repeat the actions of those before them. and the reader is well aware of this. which makes it so MUCH MORE HEARTBREAKING because you know where it's headed but there's nothing you can do but watch your own heart shatter into a million pieces :D yay for pain :D
AND THE ENDING!!!!!!!! I KNEW IT WAS COMING!!!!!!!
AND STILL!!!!!!! [image] the way the story is crafted with absolute care and attention to fine detail is what makes it such a timeless story about two young people falling in love during a turning point in their country's history
I knew the instant I saw the soccer jersey-ed girl on the cover of the book, I would have to stan.
A Rambly List of my Thoughts
- The characters of I knew the instant I saw the soccer jersey-ed girl on the cover of the book, I would have to stan.
A Rambly List of my Thoughts
- The characters of this book are written phenomenally well. They are polar opposites. - Our main character, Willa, grew up as a military kid, raised by a single mother. She is entirely dependent on herself, focused on her professional upcoming soccer career (!!!!!), and has some serious commitment/trust issues
- On the other hand, our love interest, Ryder, comes from a massive Swedish-American blended family, is very open about his feelings, and is trying to blend in at the moment. - But what these two share is an absolute love for aggravating each other. Right from the start, they argue, they bicker, they don’t get along and SO THAT’S WHY THEY ARE ABSOLUTELY DESTINED TO BE TOGETHER!!!!
The formula of True Love demands it
- What I really loved about their dynamic was it wasn’t all hate. They reached a mutual understanding (before the pranking started rolling in) that they were clearly frenemies
- They would share meals (WHEN THEY COOK FOR EACH OTHER!!! I had to scream at myself to Calm!! The!! Hell!! Down!!), help each other with studying/assignments, and be an emotional support when the other needed it. But only for about 25 seconds because then they would find something to attack the other with
(They can be paralleled to Elizabeth and Darcy - the slowwww burnnnnnn hate to love with bright flashes of lack of communication – really nails their dynamic)
- And omg when Ryder went to her soccer game ...more
