I was hoping I could nominate it for a book award that I am on a committee on. The 100 woman highlighted were amazing and noteworthy, but most of the woman's bios were brief and covered very little.
I usually say a good non-fiction wets your appetites, and makes you want to read more. Sadly, most of these highlights, were so dull why would I want to know more?
I have read full books about some of these woman and if I was first exposed to them by this book I would never want to learn more. Michelle Obama, boring; Hilary Clinton, boring; Manal al-Sharif, boring; Malala Yousafzai, boring; Jane Austen, boring; and poor Serena and Venus Williams are lumped into the same page; and all of their stories are **amazing!!** NOT Boring.
We listened to it on a road trip and it was narrated by some cool woman (Ashley Judd, Alisha Keys to name a few). I would have to pause it and say "Wait they covered nothing about this person" and would tell my passengers their story.
I appreciate the effort, but it is nothing like the book I do like Woman in Science and Woman in Sports by Rachel Ignotofsky. She tells the stories in a cool way.
This will have to sit on the shelf while I yawn! Just because a book is funded by crowd funding, doesn't mean it is any good. ...more

First, the cover looks like drops of blood. In fact before evening cracking the cover I thought maybe it was about the blood, sweat and tears it takes to make fabric.
And to make it worse, the blood splatter is all over the pages. It though well maybe Louis Bourgeois favorite color was red...well the book eludes that her favorite color is blue.
It sounded like she had a good childhood but not super happy, her dad always leaving for Paris to work, then her mother dies etc. I thought this book was pretty depressing.
What could have made it more interesting was to start out with the Spiders. it wasn't until the end that you find out the Louise Bourgeois was an artist who was known for making spiders. I thought with cloth that maybe she was a fashion designer or fabric designer. She was a cloth weaver and I think spiders are cool but it was at the end you learn about her spiders creations.
I am a sucker for a good true story or biography but I wasn't impressed!
The cloth weaving art work is cool but I could have lived a very happy life without ever reading this book!
It seems when I don't like a book I have a lot to say, when I like or even love a book I have little to say....interesting! ...more

But for me, the I don't like made up words and the strange phrases..and I guess My imagination is too limited to or be able to Google Earth where the "Far Western Part of South-east North Dakota.." (yep mind blown) or where the country of "Motta-fa-Potta-fa-Pell" or capture a "Mulligatawny" but I am boring with no imagination.
This also fits my criteria for Banned/Challenged book as there is a reference to "helpers who all wear their eyes at a Slant" and there are 3 stereotypical Asian men. The Toronto Library had it challenged. They aren't banning it but not using it a story time or prompting it! Race is a sensitive subject but the book was written in the 1960s, and though it still isn't right, it needs to be questioned by current acceptable standards IMHO! (It is as bad as a racial slur that sounds like 'links' but lets not go there) The 5 Chinese Brothers published in 1938 is full of racial slurs and well, more violence than I am comfortable with ....but it could get past a publisher in 1938 with some sort of prejudice or naivete Can't we just be all of God children and love each other regardless of race, religion, color, creed...thank you!
"Challenged, but retained at the Vancouver, Canada, Public Library (2014) despite a line in the poem about helpers who “all wear their eyes at a slant,” accompanied by illustrations that are racial stereotypes of Asians. The book is often credited with the first printed modern English use of the word “nerd” in a sentence. The library will no longer read it at storytime or promote it other than as resource material in a study of how the portrayal of other cultures has changed over time." https://www.ila.org/initiatives/banne......more

The pictures are okay and the story ended quickly and abruptly. It is fun to be a kid when the grown up let you think you are doing grown up things too... The last picture where he is holding his 'catch' of the day is cute. Other than that no impressed!...more

It was fun to read the close ish translation of the hieroglyphics . I remember in 4th grade we learned about little about ancient Egypt when the Ramsey II exhibit came to a local University. I tried to write with hieroglyphics. This would be perfect for that 4-6th grade crowd. What I liked most about the book was the authors notes in the back, explaining the history and background of the story! ...more

What saved if from giving a 2 star or lower...well I liked that Oscar called the boy "his boy" We think of animals as our cat, but it is cool to think we are 'their humans"...more
