The reason I couldn't really love this book is a mistake the Washington Capitals is a NHL team (National Hockey League) and not a baseball team, and that ruined it for me as inaccurate. Was it used because of a copy right issue? I don't know, but it bothered me. It was still a good worthwhile story I would love to see this fictional characters artwork. It was described beautifully and I want to see her art show...or is there a real life inspiration for the artwork. ...more

I "get" the pictures, I see where the illustrator was going with them with the symbolism and that is cool, but not my taste is the polite way to put it. The way I feel about them are ghastly, uninviting and well a little strange. 2 stars is generous for the pictures
If I just heard the words and not the pictures I would get a very high rating!...more

But a sign of a good book should still make someone like me, who isn't all that interested in the subject matter and make me like it. It was interesting, but it I didn't love it. I read a monster or two at a time and often found my mine wandering. I had to read it out loud in different accents to make it more interesting. The content is intriguing and I did learn about monsters, tales and folklore I have never would have learned about, but mostly I was happy when I finished a chapter.
I also didn't care for the pictures. but I can see someone who is into monsters, and ghouls and scary tales, that this would be amazing. To each his own! ...more

The artwork, reminds of the 1980's. In fact when they pulled this book out to discuss it I thought "1980's called they want their book back" I can't put my finger on what book it reminds me of, but it might have a Quentin Blake feel, which is fine.

This book, well, honestly, it is a well written and well illustrated book. In the American South, or more diverse populations with a lot of African Americans, this should be in every library. This book will not check out in my area. We are boring White people who needs to hear this story but sadly, will not identify with it.
Maya's story is universal, and important, but for the purposes I am reading and evaluating this book it just isn't going to measure up....more

3.25 I almost gave up on this book because of the 'themes' but the story and the characters were so endearing... I HAD TO plunge through. Bi racial 3.25 I almost gave up on this book because of the 'themes' but the story and the characters were so endearing... I HAD TO plunge through. Bi racial friend (Percy half English half West Indies of African decent with the sandlewood coloring...sounds hot to me), bisexual hero (Monty.. though he leans toward boys), heroine (Felicity? I) who doesn't want the finishing school life and want to be a Dr and their adventures on The Continent I even liked the sister!.The historical problem of same sex attraction and acting upon it was punishable by death.. no wonder no one "came out" I think what's important about this book is we know that women's rights and same sex attraction are all things through history and it's something we really don't talk about all that much. It's a boy and a girl they get married and live happily ever after . The reality is there were probably plenty of men who love other men and women in love with other woman and is something historical we don't talke about but should be. Does history really need to be sanitized? The story is intriguing and fun an even though there is the gay element to it, it helped me to see what it would be like to be a boy in love with another boy,.. and also find females attractive I like Monty, he is hilarious, and silly, and 18 and a boy... and it is entertaining. I don't get the alchemy aspect but c 'est la vie! Now, do I want every teen to read this?. NO!! STRONG LANGUAGE, sensuality warm to very warm.. sexual references and the Bi Sexual element is a lot to handle A little violent. I would almost say 16+. I believe book should be windows and mirrors so if there's a child who does have same-sex attraction it's a book that they can relate to and for people like me who have no frame of reference it's a window into other people's lives...more

I wa Poor book twos they are always trailing on the coat tails book one and the hopes of what will happen in book 3. This is why I don't love series. I want each book to be resolved and independent but It is a way to sell books!! However, this book was good enough to make me want to move on to book three. I can see why my mom liked Traci Peterson. Though I doubt she will be a favorite for me, I get it! She liked American Historical Fiction, She liked interpersonal relationships and family as well as the clean romance. What I like, is Great Britain and or European Historical Fiction, I like a little more drama and a little more conflict. Okay, that sounds weird, but these books are about people's day to day struggles, and that is swell, and I see why mom mom liked that, but for me, I want a little more entertainment not how normal people over come normal things. I guess different stages of life!
