This book was on every list and blog post of "Books to read" and "Books to watch this fall", the hype was real surrounding this book so I felt I *HAD* to read it. You don't have to guess, I was disappointed- hence the 1 star.
It takes a lot for me to give a book a 1 star because I cannot imagine how hard it is for someone to write a book. However, this book did NOTHING for me, I was bored stiff. Every time I picked up this book or even looked at my kindle I fell asleep. I could not get over the writing, how incest was portrayed, the characters were hard to relate to or even understand, the dialogue was weird- for lack of a better word. Also, in five chapters, this girl cleaned her gun at least 123220 times. It baffled me how the display of guns and the mention of gun was a focal point in this novel.
This book did absolutely nothing for me, but maybe it might just be me because the hype continues........more

I held off on reviewing this book because I didn't want to be angry and write a review I didn't feel good about. Two days later I am still peeved at the time I spent reading this. I know it takes a lot to write novel, I know it is hard work but I just did not like this and with all the hype around it, everything fell flat for me.
The characters were one dimensional, predictable and borderline clichés. The plot was entirely predictable and idiot proof to say the least. There are certain revelations that I honestly felt was common sense. How do you not know exactly where your husband is at every Tuesdays and Thursdays for the last three years? How blindly trusting do you have to be?
This is the thing, when a book gets high ratings and keeps showing up on my timeline I expect a lot and I was very disappointed. Last, as on Reviewer puts it, a lot of the scenes in the book were ridiculous, here you have a fully pregnant woman fighting off her attacker and going through the most stressful pregnancy. Why was she even pregnant to begin with? That added nothing to the overall story/plot progression. A lot of things didn't make sense for me and I cant say I care enough to make sense of it all....more

I am so angry for wasting my time and reading this book. It was boring, eye-shutting, sleep inducing, yawnfest. Trust me, I tried, I tried SOOOOOO hard to get into this book. I gave this book at least three tries and each time I was let down. Everything about this book was bland. I am writing this review furious thinking of all the amazing books I could have read instead of this.
I honestly didnt like anything about this book. Hands down snoozefest. ...more
I read this book because I am trying to read new releases for 2016 and because the premise of the book really intrigued me. The main character, Furo wI read this book because I am trying to read new releases for 2016 and because the premise of the book really intrigued me. The main character, Furo wakes up one morning at his home in Lagos to find out he is white, except for his ass which remained black. I really wanted to see where Barrett was going to take this premise, spoiler alert: nowhere interesting.
The idea for the book while unique was not thoroughly executed. There are so many places Barrett could have taken this plot but we were mostly shown Furo’s new white privilege. I literally kept wondering, “What else?”. Yes, he is white, yes now he has all this privilege open to him but what else?! This cannot be the entire story right?
Aside from the stagnant plot development, I also found that Furo as a character was all over the place, not memorable, and most times very shallow. There was nothing particularly unique about him that I can remember and I just finished the book.
I am scoring this low because I’m peeved that Barrett came up with such an interesting premise but butchered it. ...more
Where do I start? They say "if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all", does this apply to reviews? There are so many things wWhere do I start? They say "if you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all", does this apply to reviews? There are so many things wrong with this book and I honestly could spend an entire day going through them but I wont.
I read this book on a dare, my friend, or should I say ex-friend suggested I read this "book" and I decided to give it a go. I honestly don't know how I even read this book because I kept shaking my head and rolling my eyes at every sentence- it is a wonder I made it through.
Aside from the glaring lack of editing, the storyline is generic, overdone and repetitive. Honestly, how many times were we reminded that Larry is not good in bed. Also, I could have done without the constant drop of dancehall song lyrics and "shout-outs" in the book which did nothing at all for plot progression and character development. Doing that also alienates persons not exposed to the dancehall/ West Indian culture because they would not get the reference- then again, maybe this book was written for just the Jamaican diaspora and I am getting ahead of myself.
I wish there was something I could honestly say I love about this book but alas, nothing comes to mind.
P.S. Apparently there is a sequel, WHY?!!!! ...more

What a snoozefest. I cannot remember reading a book that made me want to scream in boredom. Stedman's got this unique ability to write over 200 pages What a snoozefest. I cannot remember reading a book that made me want to scream in boredom. Stedman's got this unique ability to write over 200 pages and not move the plot along even an inch.I cannot for the life of me understand why the book had to be so long. This story/plot could be summed up in 50 pages max.
I usually try to not complain or go too hard on Writers because I cannot imagine what it takes to write a book but.... I felt the writing in this book was one note, monotonous and over all plain and bleak. It was torture getting to the end of this book. HOW was this a Goodreads winner? HOW?!!!!
I could go on about how bad this book was but I don't possess the unique ability like Stedman to say the same thing in different ways for 400 pages...
