One might dismiss this tale when realizing that lightning (so rare in the Pacific Northwest) could transport someone 100 years back in time to a place better known for lightning storms. But that's what happens to Alaina Costanza, a writer, when she finds herself in the middle of the historical Western story she's in the midst of writing.
How to get back to her daughter? That's what forms her goal of returning home, but can she do so? Will she leave the man she's come to see is more than what she'd first imagined as the bad guy character in her story.
And when each of them comes to realize that they don't want to be separated but must if she is to make it home, how will they survive such a distance, with him remaining in Arizona, a fatally wounded outlaw and she a writer who isn't sure she should believe what she learned in that time when she was with him. A compelling tale in spite of the fantasy that starts it all....more

So the question becomes, will he or won't he? And will she finally figure out why he seems so familiar when she clearly hasn't known him before he shows up at her place of work as a police officer?...more

Part of it is fantasy and in some ways, horror, but not entirely. It starts to explore, but only tangentially, the experiences of two brothers. Oops. Sorry, a brother and his transgender sister, both before and after that sister is brutally attacked and left for dead. The reactions to this action by the mother, the father who is himself something of an enigma, and the brother form the basis of the story. Complicating and confusing their reactions is a character I still don't understand. Ms. Jakintsu--is she real? A fantasy only of the father? A fantasy that infects the primary character, Jax, from the stress of being told that Josh/Angelica may be in a coma?
I remain confused about the book and whether it really is a story or simply an exploration of the mind under stress....more

He could best be described as a superhero, kind of comic-book hero who has yet to grow into his powers and who isn’t sure he wants to use them. I had trouble getting into the story because this isn’t the genre I read on a regular basis. Additionally, the story tends to bounce from the present to the past five years earlier. Doing so was confusing for me and prevented me from really understanding and getting a good handle on the superhuman world set in Australia. That world was most clearly represented by Dan’s grandfather, the Mad Russian.
That said, I believe young adults into fantasy stories would like this tale, particularly when they empathize with Dan and his struggles with both his powers and his growing yes-no relationship with the maddening Miranda. Readers who are into fantasy worlds will appreciate the questions asked, those answered, and those left for the sequel to come. A good first novel. ...more
