The book attracted me as I wanted to know more about the historical figure of Elizabeth Báthory, the infamous Blood Countess that killed more than 600The book attracted me as I wanted to know more about the historical figure of Elizabeth Báthory, the infamous Blood Countess that killed more than 600 young girls in her Čachtice Castle in the hinterlands of Slovakia.
Her story is very fascinating and full of horror. She is considered the first real vampire as she loved to bathe in the blood of girls and even was suspected of cannibalism.
Of course, the book provided a lot of details about her life and 'activity'. In the book, we see two timelines: one in 1610 and another in 2010.
Betsy Path, an American psychoanalyst of uncommon intuition, the daughter of a Slovak psychoanalyst that studied in Vienna, is travelling to Slovakia to help her kidnapped mother. She is followed by her patient Daisy, who is interested in Gothic culture and has a strong attachment to her doctor.
It was interesting to read about Countess Bathory and Slovakia in the past and in the present, but, in my opinion, the book is too long and too slow going. This is the reason why I rated it only with 3 stars.
But if you are eager to know more about Eastern Europe's history and want to feel a bit of real historical horror, I recommend giving this book a try....more
