I feel like it drug on until past the half way mark, the only reason I even finished it was because how much I liked his other work. It ended better than I expected it to.
I can't rave about this book, I will not recommend other people to read it, but it will remain on my bookshelf and I am glad I finished it. I would have to skip Chapters to re-read it again though. Too many pages where the plot doesn't move forward and no important details are there, it is just pages of babbling to fill pages.
I still think he is a great writer. Maybe it would be your cup of tea but I will stick closer by the other books I have read by him....more

(Ooof, what does that say about me? lol) He is correct about not being a writer; it isn't hard to understand what he is getting at, although some parts I cringed at the errors... but the stories are good enough that it didn't matter to me.
I initially thought transferring from pen & paper to typing it up for a book, that a lot got lost in translation, but then I came to the conclusion that this seems to be more fiction. I've noticed that at first all of the patients said the same thing while talking to Jack. If one story has a certain phrase, you will see it again in another story. The wording between so many different people are too closely related to be of different minds. I still like the book and will continue to read the collection. ...more

Writing in aThis book seemed to be to be a half-hearted apology and excuse as to why she did everything she did. She played the victim at every page. Writing in a way that passed judgement and criticism on people making the same exact choices she was making (blatantly villainizing them), but she had an 'excuse/reason', so we should pity her. It wasn't clear if she was using thoughts that an addict would use, and as she got clean and things got better, her narrative grew - or if the book was written as her current thoughts and feelings. I am hoping for the latter. I was surprised more people didn't grasp that.
She does have some good points in the book concerning the judicial system and the book was well written, it had me interested until I reached the realization I mentioned above. There are some parts she threw in big words that seemed forced and in other parts trying to speak "street" as she put it. Some of the things she puts, just goes so much her way, I almost can't believe it. It was just unrealistic in my eyes. I wasn't there, so I can't say that it didn't happen exactly as she describes.
I will say it did seem by the end of the book that she was playing the victim less, but I couldn't tell if it was just because things were going her way or not. That's why I say it isn't clear. --I will say I am glad that I didn't stop reading when I wanted to.-- The reason I think it is written as my second theory is because by the end, it was more about other people and less about her. Her actions in the book and words she chose to describe those moments, makes me think that maybe the change in narrative was so subtle that it could almost be missed.
Lastly, I don't know this woman personally and it is easy to criticize something I didn't go through. I am not saying she is a bad person or that she doesn't deserve happiness or success. People are multi-faceted and layered. I'm literally reading trauma spread across pages, and everyone processes that differently.
I wouldn't knock her off my reading list, but I don't think I will recommend this book to anyone. It made me mad more than happy. The ending was the best part, and I mean the actual written words of the ending....more

The only other Stephen King book I have read was The Good Marriage, and even though I liked that book, it wasn't anything over the top fantastic. Nothing to solidify his reputation, that is for sure. I wasn't aware, but apparently it is normal for slurs in his books. (Cussing, sure. Slurs, I'm out especially since it was hard to even want to read this book in the first place.)
The idea for his plot is interesting, but his execution? Horrible! King of Horror? Yes, because finishing this book would be a nightmare.
All this to say, he is not the author for me. If you like him, more power to you....more

I don't usually read memoirs, but I am extremely glad I read this one! I hope Jennette keeps writing because I will gladly read anything else she has written. I hope writing this book has helped put some things into perspective and has played a role in her healing process. Girl has been through hell and back! I believe every word.
This was a book I couldn't stop reading until it was finished. 10/10 recommend!...more
