Originally written as a serial for The New Yorker, Connelly fleshed it out and turned it in to more of a novella. Since it was originally a serial, it's a little choppier than other Bosch stories. Also, there was only one plot, rather than the normal 2 or 3 that are entwined. But, Harry is still Harry...maybe a little more ornery than normal. But he cuts through the crap and finds the truth in the end. Great pre-read before the Bosch Season 6 drop in April 2020....more

I mean, it's like watching a train wreck (no pun intended)...but it wasn't really that big of a twist. Nor was it all that shocking.. It wasn't bad, but it was nothing like "Strangers on a Train" or even "Gone Girl" I think one of my biggest problems is that I had a hard time discerning the voices of the 3 narrators. Harry...Harry....Harry. Where do I begin? Harry is Harry...only better. A little mellower. I love this new Harry. I loved his mentoring of the new partner. I hope Lucy is in future novels. She's almost as good as Jerry Edgar in the early novels. The stories have an interesting intersect. And that ending...WOW! Moving on to the next one as soon as possible because I need to know how this moves forward. If you've never read a Harry Bosch book, this is a good one. You won't know where Harry has been, but you can definitely read this without having read any of the earlier ones. Highly recommended!...more

I have no desire to see the movie after reading the book because there is nonway the movie will ever live up to this book. The last 50 pages were so intense I had to take a couple breaks to lower my heart rate! I highly recommend this book!...more

Wow! What a wild ride! I really liked this book. The alternating view points worked really well. And I really loved the way the author kept twisting and twisting the story. I would put the book down and tell my husband "OK. This just got weirder." My only real complaint (and why I didn't give it 5 stars) is I didn't care for the ending. I would have preferred everything to be neatly tied up, but it's not. I don't want to say anymore......more
