This is a great story - a novel rather than a mystery or book for any other specific genre. A mother to a mute 4 year old, living in a tiny bed sit in London, barely making ends meet, is given the opportunity to be an au pair to 3 children in a historic manor on the shores of Loch Ness whilst also working a second job running the local bookmobile whilst the owner is on bed rest. Since I hadn’t read the first book, it took me a little while to get into the story and sorting out who all the characters were but the story picked up speed once I got that sorted! I really liked the evolution of Hari, the mute son. I also really liked the other children’s characters and how they developed through the story. The main character annoyed me a bit as she was so wimpy at the beginning and took so long to pull herself together. Overall a good story and I’d definitely read more by the same author but only got 3.5 stars!...more

I was delighted to spot this on the new book shelf - and realized I’d missed a couple of releases - yay more fun to read.
The story is a usual cozy mystery with Charlie and Diesel’s adventures with books and a murder mystery to solve. There are some good twists as usual and nice interactions with the regular great characters. Sadly though, I had to mark this down to a 3 star as it just felt a bit lacking compared to his usual books. It felt like it had been rushed and maybe a round of editing got missed. A few too many similar repeated phrases, some forced storylines.
Usual fans will enjoy but be a bit irritated. New fans should start at book 1! :) ...more

A small dying town attracts a grandchild of the town to return from the city to be the high school teacher. There are on-off romances for several people in the town and the story wanders along to a conclusion. Liked Hattie the Pharmacist and soda-cream maker but everyone else needs to be a bit less stupid....more
