really liked it

“All those years when I was depressed… I really hated myself sometimes. And I finally came to terms with everything, and I felt a lot better. I did. But now? I’ve never been this confident. No matter what happens, I’m a stronger man now because of you.”

After hearing some pretty devastating news of my life, this was the escape I truly needed. Maybe staying up till 5 am wasn’t the best choice, though…

One day before their marriage, Ethan comes home to find his soon-to-be husband having sex with his best friend. Torn between the two, he doesn’t want to give up on his life and the dream he promised himself and his mother. So, he packs up and decides to head to Australia, where he and his now ex-fiancé, Michael, were set to go to. Alone, heartbroken, and scared, Ethan finds comfort and trust in one of the tour guides, Clayton Kelly, who shows Ethan kindness and care. Unlike many other people, Clay doesn’t show impatience and anger towards Ethan’s deafness, treats him with respect, and offers friendship. As the two grow closer within a week, Ethan begins growing fond of the older man who offered him solace, and Clay starts questioning his own feelings.

Personally, I love reading books about characters with disabilities. I love seeing the growth and being a part of the journey they come towards accepting and embracing without shame. While Ethan had already accepted his deafness, my heart still broke for him on many occasions. His diagnosis came to him late, so adjusting to a completely new system has been difficult for him to get used to. It mentally affected him, which made him depressed and caused him to isolate himself from his friends and family. With his parents gone at a young age, Ethan relied on his best friend, Todd, and partner, Michael. After their betrayal, Ethan has no one and having to deal with multiple infrequencies only made it more difficult.

However, seeing his embracement was still refreshing. Ethan's easily felt his emotions, and I sympathized with him right from the beginning. It’s saddening to see how realistic his experience is—having to apologize for not listening, having people talk to him like he’s a child, having to ask people to slow down or repeat themselves only for them to wave it off. I loved how the author wrote his character. He felt so real and never doubtful, cheery on some occasions while angry and sad other times. However, I couldn’t blame him for how he felt. Having Australia to escape to for a little while was the perfect time he needed to forget it all. I was glad to see how slowly he started to forget about Michael and Todd and not let them bother him too much in his inner thoughts.

On the other hand, Clay was extremely supportive of Ethan regarding his deafness, and it was beautiful. He never waved Ethan off, always repeated himself in a manner where Ethan could understand, made sure he was comfortable, and even went as far as copying down the guide notes for Ethan so he could follow along in case he couldn’t head everything. It was truly heartwarming. He was also caring and soft, and his love slowly started showing in his actions. Not only when he copied his notes down, but how he was never embarrassed by Ethan, how he went out of his way to find batteries for his hearing aids, how he made sure people treated him like a normal human being, how he bought him a hat, held his bag, and took time out his work to spend with him.

He stared at Ethan—at this brave, beautiful man who had burst into Clay’s life and changed it forever. Clay hadn’t even known how lost he was, but being found was more profound than he ever could have imagined.

Along with that, Clay had difficulty with his identity for a bit, but it wasn’t something that took over the story or made his character difficult. It was because he was unsure of his sexual orientation. After all, he had been hiding and rejecting it for years now without realizing it. From what we learn about him, his father was homophobic, and when he was young, Clay experienced a moment in his life that scarred him for life. He was afraid of that happening to him. Now at 44, there were many new things within the community he wasn’t aware changed so much, such as how the word queer has been embraced and how many different sexual orientations had been discovered. He was never rude about it or anything, which I was thankful for. He was accepting of Ethan and his sexual orientation from the get-go. Ethan was able to help him come to terms with himself and his identity, one he never realized he was hiding because he was scared. While Clay felt a little ashamed at first and thought he was doing something wrong, it later became something he accepted and realized is part of him that he can’t change.

Clay’s identity exploration connects with the romance, which I felt to be developed nicely. While it only took a week (yes, I know this isn’t enough time for many, but it worked well for me!), I was able to connect with the feelings of both characters because of how much interaction there was. For Ethan, it started as a crush, whereas for Clay, it was entire confusion. However, they spent a lot of time together and learned a lot about each other, making their relationship much more believable. I appreciated being told what they had done because it was easy to imagine how easy it was for them to get along.

“It’s just you and me here. Nothing else matters right now.”

There’s an age gap between Ethan and Clay, which is one of my favorite tropes. No matter what the book is about, an age gap always gets to me. However, one of the best parts about this is how the age difference isn’t a big deal. The characters actually act their age without it being an issue. Ethan is still figuring life out, and after one of his worst heartbreaks, he decides to continue living life for himself. On the other hand, Clay wants to stay home, watch the footy, and drink a beer. He’s not interested in pursuing the women in dating sites his daughter sends him or going out on different adventures. His life consists of work, sports, beer, Gilly the dog, and his two children, Sam and Pete. Meeting Ethan allowed him to explore a little more in his own way. But, adding on to that, one of my favorite parts about this was how, after Clay realized he loved Ethan and that he, in fact, is gay, he let Ethan know, which completely skipped the unnecessary break-up scene (even though they were never truly together). Clay’s realization led to his confession, and it made their relationship stronger. While they dealt with long-distance for a while, they managed it, and it was done because there was communication.

My favorite word.

At least in romance books.

There isn’t enough communication in romance books, and it doesn’t matter if it’s mm, ff, or mf. I’ve read too many where the two characters are hopelessly in love with each other. Still, because they don’t admit it, it leads to drama or a break-up, only for the book to end with a reunion, apology, and then realizing they can’t live without each other. It’s boring.

However, Keira Andrews took a different and healthier route and decided to make the epiphany before the book ended, making the couple's love grow.

“Well, I’m not sure about the rest of it, but I know I’m not straight. Because I’ve never fancied anyone the way I do you. I don’t want to date other people. Not those women on Sam’s websites, or any other blokes. You’re the one.”

There’s almost no drama in this. Besides the drama at the beginning, with Michael, Todd, and Ethan, every friend and family member accepted Ethan and Clay. While Ethan’s parents aren’t alive, we know they were accepting of his sexual orientation. When Clay came out to his ex-wife and children, it took a while for them to wrap their heads around it, but they also didn’t create any fuzz or make a big deal out of it. Instead, it was angst and drama-free and light-hearted.

My love for age gap romances continues growing, and I’ve come to realize that Keira Andrews writes almost only age gaps. So don’t mind me if you see me binge reading all her books.

“My knight in shining armor.”

thank you, snjez! sorry this one didn’t work for you, but i’m glad it worked for me lol that it introduced me to a new author i want to read more. 💗

Snjez I've read this a long time ago and don't remember a lot more than what you mentioned in your review. 🙂 I don't really click with this author and compared to some of her other books I've read, this one was still enjoyable. 😉 I hope you like whatever you decide to read next by her! 💕

Starla I'm glad to see you liked it so much🥰Keira Andrews always manages to put in some healthy communication, so the angst isn't unbearable or frustrating😊 I love that you mentioned how well Ethan's deafness was portrayed, and how Clay was supportive, it's nice to see that the story provides a responsible and realistic portrayal. Excellent review💕

Rin (indefinite hiatus) I loved this book so much. The audio is fantastic as well. Age gap is my number one trope, too!

ah that’s music to my ears! knowing that’s she’s the type of author who adds healthy communication is definitely what i’m here for. i’m planning on checking more of her books out so i’m excited! and yes i love the disability rep in this. i’ve read few books with supportive systems with disabilities and this is one to add to the list. it was heart warming. thank you so much, starla! 🤍

thank you vee 🖤 and hmm…🤔 i would say so and so spacing because the attraction isn’t instant, per se, but it’s also not slow burn at all. they kiss for the first time 55% in and the relationship develops in a week.

thank you cal. those words are definitely reassuring and the type we need when going through tough moments. ❤️ as for the book, i hope you enjoy it when you pick it up again. i found it to be sweet and adorable even with how it made me sad sometimes. i’d consider it more fluffy though as there is almost no angst, besides the cheating in the beginning.

thank you, preeti! i’m glad to see you also enjoyed this. i didn’t know she had more historical books! i’m reading one of them right now but i thought that was the only one. i’ll check out her other historical books after. 💕 i’m also planning on just binge reading her books, especially because of how she usually writes age gap romances.

suz Lovely review Elena! 💕 I’m sorry to hear you had some bad news but I’m so happy this book brought some happiness to your life.

sanju (on and off) I get you. Communication plays such an important role in relationships, and without that, everything gets tangled up in a mess. I hate it when characters just give up before letting the other know what happened in their life or why they are the way they are. Wonderful review, elena👏🏻

len ❀ suzette ~Always Reading~ wrote: "Lovely review Elena! 💕 I’m sorry to hear you had some bad news but I’m so happy this book brought some happiness to your life."

thank you, suzette! it definitely worked at distracting me, which was what i wanted all along.

Rebecca Beautiful review Elena! ❤️
Age gap romances are my one true kryptonite too and this falls under one of my favourites! I'm glad this book could make you feel better, it's definitely worth staying up till 5 am for in my opinion!
I loved how their relationship developed, without any drama like you said, but it never felt boring for even a second, it all flowed so wonderfully!

thank you, rebecca! while i thoroughly enjoyed this, staying up until 5 am when i needed to work on homework the next day wasn't the best choice haha. but i'm still really glad i read it! it distracted me from what i was struggling with so that was even better.
i agree - it flowed nicely and felt realistic. i was easy to believe in their feelings because of how much they interacted.

Llakshmi agree agree agree. I honestly love this review so much, so many of the points you said I could 100% relate to it. I love age gaps too and this romance seems to have all the aspects I complain about the other romances lacking. The development, the COMMUNICATION, the lack of drama it all seems it be present and I love Kiera Andrews’ writing so I know that won’t be a problem for me. I really want to read this, I love a book with a deaf/blind character too so this just made top of my priority list. Amazing amazing review Elena🧡 hope your days get better ❤️‍🩹

yes, yes and yes! 💕 i hope you enjoy this when you get the chance to read it! it’s my first kiera andrews book but definitely not my last. it flowed nicely and was entirely enjoyable. it also felt realistic and accurate and i didn’t find myself bored on any occasion. the representation of deafness also felt real and authentic and was never pitying. i’ll be looking forward to your thoughts on this one! and thank you for your well wishes. i really appreciate it. 🖤

NicoleR.M.M. What a great review, Elena! This is such a lovely book, I’m really happy it was exactly what you needed. I love Keira Andrews, she’s a phenomenal author! Candy M. First of all, I really hope you're surrounded by people who can embrace you and be there for you. I'm here if you want to get anything off your chest, and I can't fathom the amount of pain those devastating news brought. Things always tend to get better, but give yourself time in the meantime to process things (just some advice, sorry if I'm overstepping!)

And moving onto your review now... I can tell how passionate you were about this one! I don't have that much knowledge when it comes to physical disabilities as I do with mental health, but it's beautiful to know how this books addressed it. I love the fact that Ethan found a supportive and warm environment, and that it sounds like the story didn't unnecessarily try to beat him up and make him suffer. So many books do this and it gets tiresome and draining. You have real life for that kind of prejudice so when it comes to fictional tales, all I want is for those types of characters to find happiness without having to walk through hell to get it.

Plus, Clay truly sounds like a dream! Not only did he communicate well —and I loved your section about the stereotypical 80% drama, by the way, because you described it beat for beat 😂—, but he was so thoughtful too. When I read how he even bought Ethan batteries for his hearing aid, I swooned! And don't get me started on how amazing it is that there is no major sexuality freakout or Clay trying to negate his identity for most of the book 🙄

I heard a lot of praise for this author, but now I know which book I'll be starting with! Whenever I get out of my slump at least 🤕 (also sorry for literally leaving an entire bible here lmaoo)

NicoleR.M.M. Aw, how sweet of you to say, Elena! 🥺
And so, since you asked ;) - I love how Keira Andrews writes such different variety of books (maybe check out the blurbs since they might not be what you look for), but some I loved were Flash rip (age-gap), Reading the signs (which is another age gap, but sports), Semper fi (historical), Beyond the sea (age-gap), and she has one of my most favorite Christmas reads - If only in my dreams. A forbidden Rumspringa is also beautifully written, but since that's about religion, that's not for everyone. I hope you find something you like, Elena! Curious to see what you end up reading 🧡

len ❀ Candy wrote: "First of all, I really hope you're surrounded by people who can embrace you and be there for you. I'm here if you want to get anything off your chest, and I can't fathom the amount of pain those de..."

girl you’re about to make me cry 😭✋🏻 thank you, really. luckily i am surrounded by people who care and show understanding. you’re definitely not overstepping, no worries! it’s not a situation of me but it’s still something that’s affected me for the past two days. being in class right now typing this isn’t helping haha.

i definitely was! i really enjoyed it!! 💛 i’m on the same boat as you but it’s still nice not to see the stereotypes and assumptions so that’s really all i can comment on. also the author jade a personal note in the beginning saying she based ethan off her own father, who was also late-deafened. what you mentioned is the reason i mostly read fluffy mm romance, because i wanna see people like ethan getting the happiness they deserve without having to suffer the way we see it. just as you mentioned.

clay was truly husband material. yes i know he’s gay but he is! i love seeing his exploration and development and overall care for ethan. it was adorable. when they’re in their 40s and know how to communicate and confess feelings right >>>> i really was preparing myself for the dumb scene where they separate and then reunite. 🙄 and yes he of course is scared and confused but nothing where he tries to change his feelings.

i’ve now been hearing a little more of this author but so far not much. like i said though she’s known for her age gaps so i’m excited to dive in! and when i say age gap, it truly is age gap!! none of that 4 years older bs. 😂 if you ever get to reading this i hope you enjoy it! 🤞🏻💕 and don’t ever apologize for your long messages. 🥰

Replying to this after turning in an assignment! How you managed to answer while in class is really leaving me in awe. I can barely take notes as it is. But I'm super happy to hear that. It's always important to have a good support circle! And you deserve all the hugs, so I'm sending a virtual one in the meantime 🖤

The fact that she based the character off of her father is such a lovely detail --and proves why she touched on the topic so respectfully. Even if this isn't Own Voices, I bet the story came from a place of wanting to raise genuine awareness and sympathy. I tend to enjoy angst more, as you know lol, but the genre is just filled with jerks for love interests, miscommunication, and needless melodrama. I really do it to myself every time! I do encounter a few gems every now and then, but you seem to be much luckier in the fluff side of things.

Plus, the older character actually acting like his age! Shouldn't be such a rarity yet it totally is. The number of 40s who end up behaving like immature teenagers... truly a subgenre itself at this point 😅 And add to that the lack of denial AND break up for drama's sake? Husband material indeed.

And I'm very much looking forward to your take on Kidnapped by the Pirate! From your updates I feel like you're not enjoying it as much, but still super curious.

I agree with you, I love reading about books of characters with disabilities, maybe it's because I can't relate or it's another perspective or it is introspective, but regardless, there is some kind of wisdom in these books and OMG OMG just typing this makes me wanna read the story 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 just reading the quotes you highlighted is making my heart pound! 🙈🙈🙈🙈

mariam you truly always know how to make my day/night. thank you. 💕 i can see this one has mixed reviews, and i understand why, but i truly enjoyed it. like i said, it was just what i needed, so if you ever give it a chance, i hope you enjoy it! and yes i agree!! sometimes books with characters who have disabilities end up teaching me something new, especially when it is actually done correctly. it happened with this book, and the character was inspired from the author's father so it has a personal touch to it.

len ❀ Candy wrote: "elena wrote: "Candy wrote: "First of all, I really hope you're surrounded by people who can embrace you and be there for you. I'm here if you want to get anything off your chest, and I can't fathom..."

and now i'm the one replying late haha.

thank you again. virtual and real hugs are always appreciated regardless. 💗

and yes i agree! sometimes when it comes to these books, i end up learning something new, and when the rep is actually done right, it makes it more personal and touching. it's one reason why i love reading books with characters who have disabilities, whether mental or physical. i guess i do have more luck but also it's because i tend to lean towards that genre more lol. don't get me wrong, i love angsty books and even books with drama but i guess because i have enough of that in life sometimes, i tend to stick with the drama free (or little to no). also because i love seeing queer happiness without having to see the characters suffering because i see that enough in real life. i'm still waiting for the day you read an nr walker book but i know you need to be in the mood for it because she's just Fluff all around. i have hope though!! 🤞🏻

i get why you say that and sadly it's true. i've come across older characters and they truly do not act their age. this man realized his true feelings and confessed and it saved the cliche plot we all clearly adore aka the break up scene. 🥰 it was such a saving point for me because i was actually waiting for it to happen so imagine my reaction when the complete opposite happened.

i know i'm late in replying but clearly i felt indifferent about kidnapped by the pirate compared to everyone else. it surely was going to be a solid 3 stars or so but that final execution just blew. hopefully i like another KA book soon.
