Read 21 times. Last read March 28, 2022.
I just finished my ninth read of this book. I have to say that books one and two are all-time favorites of mine and I simply cannot get enough. I have read over fourteen hundred books and these two remain in my top twenty all time favs. I have to say that I didn't really care much for the rest of the series.
When you begin this book it's helpful to keep in mind that the characters are just college students and they are growing and learning. Many don't learn at all but the good ones do and go on to be more open minded, productive, accepting of differences, and learn how to truly love. In their formative years their households were completely void of love and still are. It is all about appearances. Their life is all about wealth, social standing and marrying the 'right' person to keep up family appearances. They have been raised and trained to be the way they are. This is their norm and it is all they know. They were only allowed to be friends with others just like them. Changing and being more open, loving and accepting of those who don't fit their own mold is looked upon as a major character flaw that will ruin the family's reputation and social standing. Throughout this book we watch the hero battle his mother for the woman he loves. I admired him and the changes he made since it was a foreign concept to him.
Ryan Burnham is a trust fund college student who lives, eats and breathes hockey and is the captain of the team at university. His father is a US Congressman and his mother is all about appearances who makes constant demands on her children's lives. She has their future mapped out, including their careers, spouses, their wardrobe, how they talk, what they say, and basically every move they make. She is nasty, evil, controlling, and over-the-top vicious as she will do anything to get what she wants, no matter if those things leave her children unhappy, brokenhearted and empty. Ryan has her number and decides he will not put up with her interference any longer. But she has some shifty plans up her sleeve that just may ruin the lives of these two lovely people.
Danny Cross was a child prodigy violinist who had to give up her schooling at Juliard when her mother was diagnosed with cancer and died eleven months later. Her father had died years before. She works hard, volunteers at a soup kitchen/homeless shelter and attends college part time. She plans to make her own success even though it will be dramatically opposed to her musical dreams. She does what she has to do to survive.
One evening Ryan and his snooty, trust fund friends stop at a diner for a late night snack and Danny is their waitress. Ryan's ex girlfriend is along...and she treats Danny horribly. Ryan steps in and it becomes the beginning of a wonderful love story.
I highly recommend books one and two of this series. The writing is very good and the book was hard to put down. In fact, I read it in one sitting.

There is a break up point due to mommy dearest when she blackmails Danny into giving him up...she threatens with disinheriting him and he had gotten into a fight to protect Danny's honor and was being prosecuted. Since mommy had connections with the law and judges because of husband's politics she if threatening to have him sent to prison just to keep them apart.
Go for it. It is sweet and precious!!! He is not intimate with GF once he and Danny get together. (To the best of my knowledge and I always remember that!) I loved this series but there is one of the books I would advise you to maybe skip. Let me know after you read it please. This book has been a favorite of mine for years.
I already hate his mom. Grr. But love that he chose Danny over his family. And it's safe while they're separated?
It has been a few days and Ryan, the hero...my hero, has come into the diner alone and introduces himself to Danny, the heroine, who is a waitress. He asks her to dinner to get to know each other and she refuses...but then he keeps on and tells her she can choose the place. This becomes his first experience at a soup kitchen. He is never with anyone else from the get go. Loved...loved....loved this book.
The book begins when the group of friends is leaving a campus party and it's 3AM. At the party his ex asks him to dance. He tells her it isn't a good idea and refuses. She invites herself along to the all-night diner, the place where he meets the new woman and love of his life. Ex wants him back but he won't even look at her...and he doesn't leave with her. They dated for two years but he began to realize how very shallow and cruel she was thinking everyone is beneath her and she would tell them to their face. She was an awful witchy young woman and all her girlfriends that were in the same station in life followed her lead in all things. But he never shows any interest in her. Tells her off real good twice.
His mama is quite certain she is going to marry him off to the ex and he sets everyone straight on that idea several times
Thanks for the warning.
Yes it is safe which means to me the following:
No Cheating
Celibate While Apart
Completely Faiithful
Minimal OW/OM Drama (There was a little with an ex GF but he ignored her and had nothing to do with her.)
Hero Not Presently a Man-whore
Some don't like if the H or h has a child by previous relationship. I don't mind that if the ex is not in their life. If I had a preference I would choose no children when they meet but one of the best books I've read the h had a child by a previous relationship and it was a great read.
Any other SAFE reader please add or subract what safe means to you if you like.
