“I'm not sure what possessed me to do it. Maybe it was the impossible expectations I faced, maybe it was my own self-loathing. But I just knew I needed something different to happen. I needed someone... something... to derail me from my current path. Otherwise, I would become lost... a hollowed out shell of a man. So I did it. I approached her, then I pursued her, then I made her mine. And my life was saved...”

Ryan Burnham is the privileged son of a U.S. Congressman and captain of his university’s hockey team. While he is on the verge of fulfilling his dreams to play in the NHL, his parents want him on a different course. One he is expected to accept for the sake of his family’s public image.

Forced her to abandon her music career after the heart breaking death of her parents, Danny Cross exists on the opposite side of the tracks from Ryan. She is struggling to make her own way, working two jobs, attending college part time and volunteering in a homeless shelter. She is on a mission to build her own success.

With a chance meeting, their vastly different worlds collide, causing each to evaluate whether they are truly on the correct path to self-fulfillment and happiness. Can their relationship survive? Particularly when others are against them every step of the way. A lot can happen in just ten short days...

This book would've worked for me... if it was 1987.

0uOD1jX_zps1ba055fb

1.5 STARS

This is the story of Danny a Juilliard drop-out, current waitress and Ryan the hockey player who is also the son of a congressman and how they fell in love, beat the odds of class difference and the Republicans' strong stand against lavander hair dye and body piercings. Oh and how Danny cashed in her v-card.

She gives her head a small shake in the negative which makes me grin at her. She wants my touch as much as I want to give it.

...Jesus she tastes like heaven and I can't stop the groan that is rumbling up from me.

...Danny's hand grip my biceps and she flexes her fingertips inward as we kiss. I can't wait for the day when those fingertips will dig into my ass...

At this point I have dropped my reader on my boobs (I read lying down) from laughing too much.

I don't know how to review this book because I can't take it seriously for what it is. The plot is severely dated and I can't even formulate an opinion without feeling I've been taken along for a ride and I didn't get the joke. Danny started out as a somewhat strong heroine standing up for herself. But after she and Ryan got together she's turned into a shameless hussy (her words, not mine) ever so eager to give it up to the first guy who came along.

Quickly, I am moaning up a storm but I can't stop myself. I have a feeling that when we finally do the act, I'm going to be a screamer.

Ryan says gosh, calls Danny toots and refers to sex as making love... and that's basically the depth of his character. The story pretty much revolved on how Danny tries to fit in Ryan's world but everything comes to head when someone from Ryan's team attempted to rape Danny (I was going to spoiler tag that but I'm not exactly encouraging people to read this one so why bother?). After beating up said bad guy to near death, this was what was next in sweet Ryan's agenda:

I do as he asks and then melt when Ryan starts hummming a song to me. I don't recognize it at first but then I realize its John Lennon's Imagine, one of my all-time favorite songs. I utterly sink into Ryan and let him sing to me to wash away my fears.

Because nothing comforts near-rape victims like John Lennon's Imagine.

I'm giving this 1 star because it was short and the half belongs to the Honey Badger shoutout.

"And just so everyone is perfectly clear, I did not f*ck Angeline this afternoon, nor would I touch her with a ten foot pole again. Please make sure that is spread around. There is only one woman I want to touch. Because she's the one I love."

Yes, it was THAT kind of book.

In my defense, I picked this one up with the intention of fulfilling a group challenge. Only to find out later on, this wasn't the book I'm supposed to read. I'm gonna file this one under awesome moment of epic fail number 52.

★★★★! A quick, feel good read about two College students from opposite sides of the track.

Hero: Ryan Burnham, “Ry”/22 years old/student (senior)-University hockey player & team captain-son of a Congressman-trust fund baby/dark brown hair/amber eyes
Heroine: Daniella Cross, “Danny”/21 years old/orphan/part-time student-waitress/blond hair with lavender streaks/hazel eyes/virgin

Sawyer Bennet is an excellent story teller! This story has a very pleasant flow, alternating between Ryan’s and Danny’s POV. I particularly enjoyed Ryan’s.

That said I feel I need to clarify; I had read in the book description:
”So I did it. I approached her, then I pursued her, then I made her mine. And my life was saved...”
Based on that description I had thought it be one of those intense roller-coaster rides with a very dominant hero. But it is not. It is more a feel good read, borderline YA, but with sex scenes.

Ryan is a wonderful hero; he is so lovable, sweet and kind and very sexy in a cute kind of way. Danny is also a great heroine. She has had many tragedies in her life and before meeting Ryan she was barely getting by, recovering from the loss of both her parents and trying to deal with huge medical debts. Ryan and Danny pretty much fall for each other at first sight. But they have much to overcome; the difference in family status, peer pressure, a vindictive ex-girlfriend, an envious adversary and a spiteful mother….

I might have wished the story was longer and spanned a longer period of time. It’s a quick read and I enjoyed it – very little anxiety, a feel-good read.

***
“…"It was fun tonight. But you know what would be even more fun?" "What's that?" she asks. "Making out with you in my car when we get back to your place. You know, to see how foggy we can get the glass?" "That does sounds like fun. Count me in." By the time I walked her to her door, I couldn't see anything outside of my windows.”

“Danny... my parents wouldn't like you. I am so ashamed to say that they will judge you because you look different than them and you don't come from money. They won't even bother trying to look at all of the amazing things that I see in you. And I'm so sorry for that because they'll never know what a fantastically amazing woman you are.”

“She's quiet for a minute then she says in a small voice, "I'm always afraid you'll leave me. That one day I won't be enough for you."

I just finished my ninth read of this book. I have to say that books one and two are all-time favorites of mine and I simply cannot get enough. I have read over fourteen hundred books and these two remain in my top twenty all time favs. I have to say that I didn't really care much for the rest of the series.

When you begin this book it's helpful to keep in mind that the characters are just college students and they are growing and learning. Many don't learn at all but the good ones do and go on to be more open minded, productive, accepting of differences, and learn how to truly love. In their formative years their households were completely void of love and still are. It is all about appearances. Their life is all about wealth, social standing and marrying the 'right' person to keep up family appearances. They have been raised and trained to be the way they are. This is their norm and it is all they know. They were only allowed to be friends with others just like them. Changing and being more open, loving and accepting of those who don't fit their own mold is looked upon as a major character flaw that will ruin the family's reputation and social standing. Throughout this book we watch the hero battle his mother for the woman he loves. I admired him and the changes he made since it was a foreign concept to him.

Ryan Burnham is a trust fund college student who lives, eats and breathes hockey and is the captain of the team at university. His father is a US Congressman and his mother is all about appearances who makes constant demands on her children's lives. She has their future mapped out, including their careers, spouses, their wardrobe, how they talk, what they say, and basically every move they make. She is nasty, evil, controlling, and over-the-top vicious as she will do anything to get what she wants, no matter if those things leave her children unhappy, brokenhearted and empty. Ryan has her number and decides he will not put up with her interference any longer. But she has some shifty plans up her sleeve that just may ruin the lives of these two lovely people.

Danny Cross was a child prodigy violinist who had to give up her schooling at Juliard when her mother was diagnosed with cancer and died eleven months later. Her father had died years before. She works hard, volunteers at a soup kitchen/homeless shelter and attends college part time. She plans to make her own success even though it will be dramatically opposed to her musical dreams. She does what she has to do to survive.

One evening Ryan and his snooty, trust fund friends stop at a diner for a late night snack and Danny is their waitress. Ryan's ex girlfriend is along...and she treats Danny horribly. Ryan steps in and it becomes the beginning of a wonderful love story.

I highly recommend books one and two of this series. The writing is very good and the book was hard to put down. In fact, I read it in one sitting.

DNF at pretty much first chapter.
It’s me, not you.
This is an absolute personal preference.

I’m not from the upper class, if anything i may belong to lower middle class, so I don’t roll on trust fund money. I am not awfully smart, I never passed philosophy 101. I’m on the average side of intelligence.

I’m also not stunningly breathtakingly pretty or beautiful. No man has looked at my face and forgotten how to speak. Very few has looked back twice or admired.

So tell me something, does that give your gorgeous, polished, superficially smart trust fund babe a right to insult me? Simply cause she feels like it? Simply cause she feels she’s superior?

I don’t know any theories by “Ockham’s Razer” to stun you to silence. Fuck! I don’t even know who or what Ockham’s Razer IS. So I should slowly fade to background while your buddy insults me and the others find amusement out of it. YOU find amusement out of it until it’s too much too obvious and harsh, then you just feel a little embarrassed but decide it’s easier to let me cop it than argue with the vicious buddy of yours? Until you see me, and is struck by insta something I have no value?

That’s exactly what the hero did.

This is his ex to heroine who’s an waitress:

“The table goes silent then I hear Angeline say in her most affronted voice, “Excuse me. But we are in the middle of an important discussion. Do you think it’s appropriate to just interrupt us with the assumption we are ready for you?”

Just because she was doing her job!

And THIS is hero’s reaction:

“Everyone starts laughing hysterically, myself excluded. But I do give an inner smirk to myself and just shake my head. Angeline can dress someone down and make them feel about three inches tall in just a matter of seconds. It’s a true art form of the criminally wealthy and insanely narcissistic.”

Oh! What a gentleman! He doesn’t laugh AT the heroine loudly, but he laughs nevertheless.

So what if this was a 40 year old single mum or dad who dropped out from high school? And didn’t have the wit or energy to answer back to his ex? He would have deserved this treatment from hero’s ex and it’d be ok for hero to smirk to himself?

The heroine had to prove her worth in intellect first, then had to be stunningly attractive for hero to notice.

I just couldn’t get past that. Yes, he left a $50 tip, BECAUSE she charmed him with her wit, NOT because he genuinely felt guilty for his companion’s behaviour. Yes, they have an HEA, he loves her, they’re soulmates. But to me he’s nothing but an ugly frat boy blowing daddy’s money.

I’m 30 years old, I love fluff in romance but at the same time I refuse to accept glittery foil as gold.

Respect needs to be earned as a person however minimum respect is something a human being deserve! Be that a waiter, a sales clerk or a tradie. You treat them as your equal as a human being.

Hero failed to give minimum respect to a waiter at a restaurant, I refuse to give him any respect as he hasn’t earned it. I’m out.

Ryan and Danny.......

Wow!! What a total surprise ! This was an Amazon freebie and it sounded pretty good... not too long..something I could read Sunday afternoon... and this book turned out to be so very very good. I would have paid for this one if I'd had any idea how good it would be. Both Ryan and Danny are hot.. he's the captain of their hockey team at Northeastern... Tall , sexy hair, muscles, abs.. fine fine fine. Danny doesnt have much money.. works at diner, goes to Northeastern part time and volunteers at a homeless shelter.. she beautiful and sweet.. with purple streaks in her hair, a nose ring and an eyebrow ring. But she's georgious... She had to leave Julliard to take care of her dying mother so she has no family . just her cool ass roomate Paula and Sarge down at the homeless shelter. Her and Ryan are so opposite as far a money goes.. but their hearts are just the same..

Problems to come up with his mom who wants Ryan to date in his "class" as she considers Danny "Trailer Trash" and one of Ryan's teammates is cruel and very mean and wants to hurt both Ryan and Danny. Danny is tough though and won't back down from anyone. .but at some point there is only so much a woman can take.. right?

Another thing, even though I think some are tagging this as YA... I wouldnt say that. There's plenty of steam in this book and the sex is pretty hot. Its not a book FULL of sex, but the couple of scenes we get to "see" are hot. I'd reccommend it to all my GR friends.
Really liked this one a lot and i'll be checking out this authors other books.

I’ve read several Sawyer Bennett books and enjoyed them, so I was excited to try the first book in her ‘Off’ series. I’m not sure if it was the book itself (a little too instalovey for me) or the narrators (didn’t quite work for me) but this one was just okay for me. I didn’t dislike it, but it was not my favorite.

Cringe factor 100; unoriginality factor 1000

I have 723 books on my Kindle. In my year of reading mostly chick-lit novels, I bought lots in this category. Anyway, in my search for something unchallenging, I had to go towards the back of my kindle and open some random books, see if I find something easy and distracting. I wish Kindle offered a Pick a book at random kind of thing. Anyway ...

I began reading this. I felt like I'd read it before, but according to GR, I hadn't.
Hockey player, rich boy falls for the smart, virgin, (because it's almost always virgins in these preposterous new adult novels!!!) from the wrong side of the tracks. She's beautiful, works hard, both parents are dead (hand me the tissues), she studies, she even volunteers at a homeless shelter - I give you the virgin saint! She also plays the violin, because why not? This story has been done to death. The characters are as cliche as they come, the plot so unoriginal, even I could have written it as I have no imagination. Their interactions were sooo cheesy, so many gooey declarations, I gagged and rolled my eyes.

Could somebody enlighten me about a few issues? Romance novels are written almost exclusively by women; their audience is almost exclusively women. Then why is it that most of them, pointing a finger especially at the contemporary new adult romance genre, are following and reinforcing those patriarchal views of the nice girl, preferably virgin, who, of course, turns out to be a sex goddess, then there's the jock, who just changes his personality for a girl. It's like they have a personality disorder, even when allowing for the "love is blind", "love gives you wings" blah blah... In other words, if you want to see how entrenched the patriarchy is, read these novels written by women for women. Apparently, even our escapist fantasies have moulded into the male ones ... Rant over!

The ebook was promptly deleted. I'll have to GR check all these older titles on my Kindle and start removing them from my device.

For the record, I'm not bashing this particular author, it's more of a general disdain for the subgenre and those who perpetuate these stereotypes.

Sawyer Bennett's Off Sides has a great opening. It sucked me in and made me really excited to read the rest of the story. But, as it turned out, I (yet again) got excited for nothing. The story went from "this will be amazeballs!" to "okay, I can still deal with that" and then to "oh God, WHYYY!?" in a matter of 10 chapters. And why? Because of that damn insta-love. Ryan and Danny know each other for 10 days—TEN DAYS for God’s sake!—and in these ten days words like "deeply in love," "marry me," "my one and only," "the one" and whatnot are already floating around. I’m sorry, but that’s not normal. And their whole relationship gets even more absurd when you consider that in those ten days they didn’t see or speak to each other for five days. I mean, it takes me more time to build a trusting relationship with a new phone... Just saying...

Off Sides had the potential to be great, but it takes more than just some crappy insta-love to make me like a book.

THE STORY

While out with a group of Jock friends and College elite people at an all night diner Ryan meets Danny.
She’s not here to eat but she’s working.

She puts the Queen Bee Angeline in her place.

“Excuse me. But we are in the middle of an important discussion. Do you think it’s inappropriate to just interrupt us with your assumption we are ready for you?”
“I’m so sorry… It’s just… I saw all of you sitting here, and well, forgive my ignorance’s, but I’m pretty sure it was Ockham’s Razer says that among competing theories and all things being equal, the simplest theory is probably the correct one. I saw you had already looked at the menu’s and put them back down. Therefore, the simplest theory is that you are ready to order. Think of it this way… I think I saw you review the menus, therefore I am here to take your order. I mean Ockham is a little before Descartes’ time, but it’s still a sound principle don’t ya think?”

This is the only thing that gets Ryan’s attention for the first time that night.

Danny is gorgeous but not his type.

She’s stunning. No unique. No… that’s not it. Uniquely stunning… that’s what she is. I don’t know what it is about this girl, but fuck she’s hot. And cleary smart as shit. Ryan’s inner thoughts

She has blonde and purple hair.
As well as a nose and eyebrow piercing.

After leaving a huge tip he leaves with his friends.

He can’t get her out of his head and goes back a few days later to ask her out.
She reluctantly agrees.

Danny thinks she can scare him off.
He is all Captain of the Hockey team hotness and well she’s the girl from the wrong side of the tracks.

She makes him take the bus downtown and then volunteer at a homeless shelter as their first date.
Ryan isn’t scared off and tells her that he knows what she is doing.

The night is left off with an out of this world kiss.

Finally Ryan pulls away slightly, breathing hard against my mouth. “Jesus, Danny.”
I don’t think Jesus has anything to do with the explosion that just happened between us but if He did, I’m heading to church to thank him.

With a promise of a call…

The next day Ryan is as happy as he has ever been, he can’t believe how amazing Danny is. How much she has been through in her life and still be such a strong person who loves life, plus that kiss. He has NEVER felt like that just from a kiss.

Until one of his team mates starts to rub Ryan the wrong way about Danny accusing him of going slumming.
Ryan loses it and belts the shit out of him.

Danny wakes up the same way.
Can’t believe someone as amazing as Ryan is interested in her. The broke and working 2 jobs girl.
The Julliard drop out.
The girl with purple hair and piercings.
The Orphan.
She had nearly invited him inside last night!
So she does what every girl does..
Waits for his call..

But that call never comes…

Eventually he comes crawling to her telling her that although they are different he wants to be with her and doesn’t care what anyway says about it.
He though that by staying away he was protecting her.
He doesn’t want people talking smack about her just for being with him..

But stuff them all.
He wants her and is going to have her

The people in their lives certainly don’t make it easy for them.

What we get is a whirlwind of happiness, sadness, losing the Big V card, romance, blackmail, deceit, bitches, fighting, and crazy ass people!

Their relationship is like nothing neither has experienced before.
They want it.
They fight for it
But in the end is it enough?

MY HONEST OPINION

OF COURSE THEIR LOVE WAS ENOUGH! I don’t read stories without a HEA!

Ok so Characters

Ryan - I like Ryan. A LOT. Right from the start when we meet him playing angry birds in the diner. He is a Jock, the captain of the hickey team, a Congressmen son. A Big Man on Campus and an all round sweetheart.
I mean seriously at times he was tooo nice.
He treated Danny like gold. He wasn’t an asshole wasn’t a cheater. Just an all round great guy. With a quick temper.

Danny She was pretty kickass. She had led a HARD life, but she was still full of it. Didn’t take things for granted, was smart and sassy, beautiful with a huge heart.
And a total spitfire.
The thing I liked the most? I didn’t want to punch her in the head half the time!
I loved being in her head and that she made decisions! Wasn’t goddamn decisive about everything or whiny. So yeah I like her.

Mike & Paula Every protagonists needs kick ass best friends.

Angeline & Celia Ice Queens. Rot in hell you bitches GRR

Malone aagghh don’t even get me started on him!

Ok so long story short..

Has this been done before? Yes
Did I still enjoy it? Yes
Were there ridiculously HAWT sex scenes? NO.. They were fade to black scenes.
Was the chemistry awesome? Yes yes it was

I did like this. A bit predictable. But still an enjoyable read that made me smile so that’s all that matters.

I would of loved a kick ass epilogue... or More... as to how they are now.. a sequel maybe?

The Blurb:

“I'm not sure what possessed me to do it. Maybe it was the impossible expectations I faced, maybe it was my own self-loathing. But I just knew I needed something different to happen. Ryan Burnham is the privileged son of a U.S. Congressman and captain of his university’s hockey team. While he is on the verge of fulfilling his dreams to play in the NHL, his parents want him on a different course. One he is expected to accept for the sake of his family’s public image.

With a chance meeting, their vastly different worlds collide, causing each to evaluate whether they are truly on the correct path to self-fulfillment and happiness. Can their relationship survive? Particularly when others are against them every step of the way. A lot can happen in just ten short days.

This was a freebie, sounded good, and not too long. The main characters were from opposite sides of the tracks, yet really had much in common. One learned life was not all privilege and the other learned she could possibly have happiness after all.

There were the typical villains; evil manipulative mother scorned, an ex-girlfriend, and a violent team member. All of these characters plot to break up the lovebirds.

The biggest pleasure was seeing how the guy was just gone over the girl. He decided after much thought, he was willing to deal with whatever came his way from his peers because he was so taken with her. He wasn't pushy, he was sweet. He reassured her this was real and he was willing to take his time.

This book was just sweet and it fit the mood I was in.
The author has a second book with the sister of the lead guy. She will be learning her life lessons next.

Hero-rich, college hockey player, snobby family, interfering snobby ex

Heroine-poor, no family, college student, works at a diner

Story Conflict-couple has to deal with prejudice against heroine for being poor, working in a dinner, having purple hair and facial piercings.

I liked the story but had trouble with the conflict and it’s a major portion of the couples dealings. I did listen to the audiobook from the Audible Romance package. This has duel narration and both were very good.

DNF @ 56%

I can't force myself through another second of this. I really thought I would be able to power through it so I could include it in my challenge, but I can't. This may be the worst book I have ever (almost) read.

I have pages of notes and no desire to actually review this so I am literally just going to type up my notes and silly quotes that I highlighted.

1. This book is the definition of insta-love. They go on one date and they're both obsessed with each other, but apparently that one date was enough to solidify their relationship because the next time they see each other they're "breaking up." Then of course, they immediately make up and 30 minutes later Ryan is offering to pay for her to go back to Julliard. "I can help you, Danny. Pay for the expenses." Not weird, at all. Eye roll. It takes them like 3 seconds to become boyfriend and girlfriend.

2. Ryan gets turned on every time Danny refers to him as her boyfriend.

3. The book needs an editor. Badly. Countless typos. No contractions. It's awkward.

4. Ryan and his friends chat like a bunch of hormonal women.

5. VIRGIN TROPE ALERT. Duh. Of course Danny is a virgin. And she wants Ryan to take her virginity after a week.

6. Ryan compliments Danny an absurd amount of times. STFU already.

This book was crazy cheesy. I'll let these quotes speak for themselves.

"Her t-shirt hugs her amazing upper body curves."

"Our tongues are swirling... Stabbing."

Ryan asks her to play violin and she has a breakdown. This is like 30 minutes into their second meeting:

"Ryan eventually picks me up and carries me into the living room. He sitting on the couch with me in his lap and continues to soothe me. I lay my head on his chest and let him and I revel in the cocoon of understanding he is giving me. My tears eventually dry, but Ryan continues stroking my hair, my arms, my face. He kisses my temple, my cheek, and the corner of my mouth, then squeezes me in a hug. I have never felt more cherished in my life."

"I have a bedside lamp on with a red scarf thrown over the top and it provides incredible romantic lighting."

"Maneuvering until he's kneeling in between my legs, his hands reach the button of my jeans. He looks up at me. "Can I?" "I'll die if you don't."

Ryan: "Last night was amazing. It was one of the greatest sexual experience of my life and I didn't even get off."

Ryan: "You are a class act, toots."

"I rewarded him with a kiss full of nips and bites which had both of us groaning."

Audio re-read 10/30/18
I'm glad this wasn't a very long audio because I can't say I was a fan of the narrators. The female one was okay, but the male just didn't have a voice I could appreciate. It seemed a little too monotone for me and I almost gave up within the first few minutes of listening, but pushed forward his wasn't the only narration and luckily Ryan didn't have too many POV's after the beginning.

Loved this book, I wish it was longer.. The cover is reallly good..
I hate it how amazing books always end way to quickly.
Ryan, *swoon* LOVED HIM
Danny, Loveddd her.. fierce babe!
Ah.. and shallow people.. what wonderfully entertaining characters you sluts make.

They fell in love an awful lot quickly, but hell.. love is blind so love can be fast too :P hehehe
Ryan and Danny were just purrr-fect~ ;)

"Danny, I'm falling in love with you. I just...need you to know that." I smile at him and I can feel my eyes misting. "I'm already there. Glad you caught up."

She's a natural blond. I can tell by the color of her eyebrows and I'm sure if I get her pants off, I can confirm that.

I now understand how car windows become fogged.

REVIEW HAS SPOILERS

Danny-17-Waitress-

Ryan-17-Athlete-

Now see, THIS is what a YA should be like.

I LOVED the h.
while some might cower from H's ex and get intimidated by there rich pompous ass, Danny girl did NOT. She went toe-to-toe with the bitchy OW.
Also,i hated hated HATED, Ryan's mother. she is a bitch in the second book also. I HATE her.

Ryan is a sweet guy , a possesive, alpha male and all, but......ummm........it bothered me that he was 17 and wasn't a virgin. I mean.......how many books out there do u see with a 17 y/o experienced guy?
But i loved that he was SO patient with Danny and waited patiently for her to have sex with him the very first time.

And we all can agree that since it's Sawyer Bennet. The sex scenes are.....wohoooo!!!!! 💥💥💥💥💥🥵🥵🥵🥵

🤸‍♂️V-h
🤸‍♂️Extremely intelligent and hardworking h.
🤸‍♂️Celibate H
🤸‍♂️No-cheating
🤸‍♂️Separation. But neither with anyone during this.
🤸‍♂️OW drama. H's ex whom he DID NOT have feelings for.
🤸‍♂️Happily ever after.
🤸‍♂️Epilogue-I dont remember if they are engaged, or married or have kids in this book, but i DO remember that in the 2nd book of this series(which is about the H's sister), the H's sister mentions that Ryan has a baby boy. So, yeah complete HEA!!! becuse they later have kids in the series.

I think I going to keep this review short. If I go into the details what I didn't like about the book it would be too long, LOL.

This was a bad case of insta-love... I don't have anything against insta-attraction or insta-love if it's believable. But this? No, just no.
okaaay
The book has 167 pages and it happened so much it was like a really really bad soap opera.
what

At times it was so ridiculous I had to laugh out loud. So it still was somewhat entertaining, LOL.

When Ryan and his friends grab a bite to eat after a night of drinking, the witty waitress, Danny catches his eye. From the piercings and the blue tips in hair, she is nothing like the girls he is expected to date. But there is something about her that he can’t resist. He knows by pursuing her that he’s opening her up to attacks from his inner circle that might look down on her, but it’s a battle they are willing to face together.

Danny has a thing or two to teach Ryan about the real world that exists outside of the elite he finds himself around. The integrity that exists with those that work to survive and fight to have a chance, the exact opposite of everything he was raised around. But with his parent’s high expectations, his relationship is tested to the point of breaking.

So for those that follow my reviews you might notice a pattern here. Yes, another Sawyer Bennett book. I can’t help it. I have fallen utterly in love with the way she writes and the stories she has to tell. I knew after finishing up two of her other series, that I had to start Off Sides, a book that has been on my Kindle forever.

It was everything that I expected it to be. The love story was sweet – it did have a very instant-love deal, but that is not an issue for me as a reader when the story itself can stand on its own.

If you haven’t yet picked up this author, do so. You can’t go wrong with any of her books – just pick one and start and prepare not to stop.

This was a really sweet, touching story about a Boston college senior (Ryan Burnham), son of a prominent U.S. Congressman, captain of his hockey team, and future NHLer. Ryan meets a girl from the 'opposite side of the tracks'--sweet Danny Cross.

Due to some truly heartbreaking circumstances, Danny has been forced to give up her scholarship at Julliard, works as a waitress in a diner, goes to college part time, and volunteers her time in a homeless shelter. When Ryan meets her at the diner one late night when she's serving him and his friends, he is impressed by her wit and smarts when she puts his ex girlfriend in her place after some nasty put downs. This beautiful girl with the purple tipped hair and facial piercings intrigues him. He's got to get to know her, no matter if it will freak out his ultra-conservative family. And he does get to know her, and their story develops into one sweet, yet sexy read!

I loved Ryan. He was the perfect beta hero, almost too mature for his young age. I couldn't believe how sweet he was, given his upbringing. he was just awesome with Danny, supportive and caring and damn he was sexy too!

And Danny, what an awesome young woman. The perfect woman for Ryan. Sweet, caring, smart, with a tremendous spirit and plenty of guts. I was totally convinced of their love for each other (it happened in a matter of weeks) and knew each would do anything for the other. A truly selfless love. Well done, Sawyer Bennett! 4 1/2 stars

I read this in 2013 but haven't put it on GR til now...

This is the first in a series of books but does not have a cliffhanger , thank goodness! This first story is about Ryan ,a rich college student from a wealthy family who is also a talented hockey player. Whilst out with friends one night he meets Danny (Daniella) who is from a totally different background. Can the two of them get past the obstacles in their way to stand any chance of being together? This is a lovely story with a good ending . I read this series after reading a couple of quite dark and heavy books so it was a welcome change. Excellent summer read. Enjoy!

Re read via audible June 2023.
Narrated by Charlotte North and Matthew Holland.
It's been a while since I read this so I was looking forward to listening to it this time round. I'm not sure that the male narrator worked terribly well for me but that is purely personal preference.
Still a good story.

HEA? Yes - great ending.
Cheating? No.

@54%, I'm done.

This one reads like a young girl's Dear Diary entries. The H someone that only said young girl could dream up as the perfect prince.

I honestly don't know what to rate it. I listened to the Audible book and the narration is great. The writing is also good and flows at a nice pace. There's really nothing wrong with it other than I didn't like the gooey sweetness of the (unrealistic) story.

First thing first, thanks for the recommendation but this book, or this author for that matter, isn't for me.
For those who enjoy this book, look away if you're easily offended.

or don't.

I can't simply just ignore H's bad behavior and carry on with the story. I REFUSE to overlook his showing disrespect toward h when she was just trying to do her job as a waitress.

I can see the waitress appoaching from the corner of my eye but I don't look up as I am perilously close to breaking my high score. She stands there for several seconds while the conversation rages on, patiently waiting for a break in the expenditure of brain cells. When no one pauses to even take a breath, she gives a little clearing sound with her throat.

The table goes silent then I hear Angeline say in her most affronted voice,"Excuse me. But we are in the middle of an important discussion. Do you think it's appropriate to just interrupt us with the assumption we are ready for you?"

Everyone starts laughing hysterically, myself included. But I do give an inner smirk to myself and just shake my head....

Don't try to convince me that he didn't disrespect her because he sure DID secretly.
That's a huge NO for me. You treat people with respect regardless of who they are or what they do for a living. You treat them as equal, period.
And since one of the main characters clearly lacked of the most basic moral value, I'm done.

Blurb:

Off Sides is a story of opposites attract. Daniella or Danny, and Ryan are from opposite side of the tracts but they connect in the more important ways: mind and heart. This short and sweet story filled my heart and left me with a big fat grin at the end.

Ryan, captain of his college hockey team has aspirations to play professional hockey but feels pressured by his family to take another path. He falls for a girl that his family clearly does not approve of and somehow Daniella gives him the courage to take a stand for both her and his future dreams. I love a man in uniform but I rarely think of a hockey player as the kind that would make me weak in the knees. This all changed with Ryan!! *swoon*

Danny was sweet, caring and intelligent and with all the tragedy she’s had in her past, she’s long due for a reward like Ryan! And man is this boy a reward!! There were some very steamy scenes to prove it! Danny was a strong character without being hateful and I just loved how she handled evil Angeline and dirtbag Reece!

This read will make you swoon, fire up your insides and fill your heart will joy!

“It’s you Danny. It will only ever be you.”

Spoilers ahead

This author is one I scroll pass simply because I tried a few of her books and she seems to favor certain themes that I'm not a fan of. A review by a fellow GR buddy convinced me to try this.

A fast paced read of a rich boy and a poor girl who's looks and social status make her the exact opposite of the type of girl he should be with. Ryan meets Danny at the diner where she works when she puts his bitchy ex in her place. He's attracted to her and after a bit of a pause he goes after her. Lots of people do not approve of the pairing especially his mom. A teammate causes some problems for the couple which leads to more bumps to their HEA but they eventually get there.
A bit predictable but nonetheless cute read. I hated the stupid last minute separation, Danny was so sensible before why would she believe his stupid mother ugh!
Anyway not a bad read.

Juvenile and simplistic writing. Boring unoriginal plotline. Silly dialogue.

The entire book reads a 13 year old girls journal complete with all her immature romantic fantasies of what college will be like. One dimensional characterizations. Of the MC's along with all of the secondary characters. The H doesn't talk or think like a guy at all. Not even a nice guy. He sounds like what a young girl wants a guy to be like but has no experience to go on.

Some of Ryans thoughts....

"I'm not making love to you tonight.' When we finally come together it will be perfect."

They went on a date, he doesn't call her for a week then when he asks to talk to her she thinks hes breaking up with her. They went on one date. Ryan mentions the making love thing the first night.

"Its certainly not happening to fast for me. I feel like a teenage boy getting ready to have sex for the first time."

Bottom line it was awful. Wish I could get the time I spent reading it back.

This was a cute and fast read. I think I would've given it a higher rating if this wasn't so short and if the author would've expounded further. I'll see how far I decide to go in this series since it's available through Audible Plus while I still have it free.
