Time of Death: 44%
I'm not rating it because I didn't finish it and don't expect to ever do so. If I had to I'd say it's worth at least a 3 because of the beginning if nothing else...
Even though it's killing me to not know what errors were made and why concerning how humans are perceived and treated and what led to the aliens taking over Earth.
I just can't.
See, the summary mentions this balance achieved between the two aliens from an exchange of power. But that's not how the book reads (so far). See my notes as to why.
Also, I'm not fond of the whole "I hurt you because I love you" thing...which is weird because I do like BDSM stories. Well, not this alien version of BDSM (or at least the Domestic Discipline aspect, which is all I saw and where I waved off). Could be more later in the book that shows the actual exchange of power, but beating someone for disobeying - for making their own choices and acting as an individual - just smacks too close to the domestic violence I was entirely too familiar with. (Specifically, Nary isn't giving the other guy his submission. It reads like he's seen as weaker and as if it's expected. I don't care if the guy professes to love Nary beyond all reason and takes exquisite care of his "discipline" injuries. My ex did that, too. But I've been given someone's submission, and it's not the same. The SUB has all the power ...and that's not how this reads. Nary doesn't get to say no. Doesn't get to safeword - I don't even think there is one.)
So, yeah. I'm not the right audience for this. Other readers will be and that's great. Enjoy!!
But I did like the invasion & evasion in the first 1/3 of the book! Wish there'd been more of that...

That's how it read to me...even if the intent was for it to be a power exchange. Could very well be that later in the book there's more to the couple (thruple?) revealed that contradicts my interpretation, but as much as I want to know the STORY aspects that I'm missing out on, I don't want to wade through the "BDSM" depicted here. (Quotes used because even I can distinguish between Earth practices and what might be considered acceptable on another world/in another society.)
