The Crown of Gilded Bones was one of my most anticipated books this year. These books are like junk food for me. High quality? No. But very enjoyable. And sometimes that’s all we need. The first book was tons of fun. I had a few issues with the second book but I still enjoyed it anyway. However, this installment simply wasn’t as good as the first two.

This book continues directly from the cliffhanger of AKOFAF and the first chapters (which were released as a sample) made me very excited to read this book. Well, suffice to say it started with a BAM. Then from 15% to 55% (approx.) almost nothing happens…

I have no idea why JLA decided to stretch this series into 6 books. Considering that these books are so long and just like in AKOFAF, there was little progress on a considerable chunk of the book, it could’ve been easily a trilogy. Some speculated that the 3 other books might be a spin-off but no. This book ends with somewhat of a cliffhanger (an event unresolved but not like the one in AKOFAF). Maybe because of the success? I don’t know but I certainly hope she stops at book 6… or makes the books shorter at the very least because we’re talking here about 600+ pages where not much happens for the most part!!

Spoilers for the first two books from here. I’ll be writing pros and cons (but oh mostly cons list)

Pros:
The characters were the highlight of this book for me. I care about Poppy, Cas, Kieran & co. I like these characters and care deeply about them, something I’ve been struggling with lately with other books. Even though I’m complaining about 6 books, as long as Poppy and Cas stay awesome, I don’t think I’ll get bored reading about them (unless we still have 1800+ pages about them, then I don’t know).
The book started with a bang. For the first 4-5 chapters I couldn’t put the book down (I read the sample though first). It also ended on a high note for me too.

In-Between:
- This book definitely lacked the addicting quality I loved in the first two books. Mind you, not always. Like I mentioned above, I couldn’t put the book down at the beginning and then towards the ending I finished it quickly, but I struggled with the middle because little -if anything- was happening.
- While I like that it’s not a simple fantasy like it started, as I said in AKOFAF, this series did not set up the stage for such a level of fantasy.
- The thing I love about these books the most is the fun and while some parts were fun to read, I had to push myself to read some others because of some of the cons I’m going to talk about later.

The cons
✘ Remember everything you (not everyone but many still) and I have complained about in book 2? If you don’t let me wrap them up for you:
➻ the repetitiveness
➻ how SSSSSSPECCCCIAL Poppy is
➻ her QUESTIONS
➻ stabbing people! How hot!!
➻ Casteel telling anyone who would listen about Poppy’s favorite book.. uhm what
➻ the abundant unnecessary details about Poppy’s day-to-day life
➻ the indecent inappropriate stuff Casteel wants to do to Poppy
Well, in case you assumed we got our fill (and then some more) of these ridiculous comments, YOU’RE WRONG! JLA did not have enough! While Cas barely made any comments about the questions, Kieran did. A lot.

This really annoyed and tired me because these comments were abundant.

Let’s talk about the fantasy genre. What makes a fantasy book actually good? Well, the world-building is definitely an important aspect of the book. The magic system. The fantasy elements. And how do you usually introduce them? Gradually in book 1, you prepare the reader. Not in freakin book 3. What makes them even better is the FORESHADOWING. So we have a map now and I’ll give you a very simple example: Iliseeum. It’s an area in the East and important in this book. I searched in AKOFAF for one mention of it but got 0 results. And yes, Casteel knows of it. It could’ve been casually mentioned just to say it was not invented in this book. but nope. Seems like JLA is figuring out stuff as she goes along.. I mean please this is speculation and not a spoiler, of course, Poppy will win and survive and this can be done in numerous ways. Well, JLA is deciding the "how" as she progresses.

The info dump in a third installment. I cry. This annoyed me in book 2 but JLA really wasn’t planning for such a complex fantasy but hey who cares? We can still pull off this shit now. The whole god/deity thing for example was so vague and confusing. And Poppy’s ancestry was debated so much with each time a different result that when the “plot twist” in this regard happened, I was thinking please be the last. I don’t think I can take another different parentage.

JLA Mudded things enough that when yet another plot twist about Poppy was revealed, she was able to get away with it because of the vagueness I mentioned.

✘ Speaking of which, Poppy is overpowered much?? No training no nothing with her new abilities yet she can do everything?? The same day she discovers them?! Also: I (as in Poppy) literally, thought oh I have these abilities but I can’t do this… then but who said I can’t? And of course, she was able to do what she had in mind.

✘ I found the whole thing with the Queen of the Ascendents pretty illogical (view spoiler)

The writing… style. I don’t… I don’t know what to say about… it. CAN POPPY STOP USING … IN HER (countless) INNER MONOLOGUES? This was also getting common in SJM’s books, is this a new trend? It’s annoying af. Fine I wouldn’t have minded in dialogues but otherwise?? I really.. really… really….. don’t like it.

✘ Again, I mentioned already how this book dragged. 200 could’ve been cut out easily. Especially since the pace wasn’t consistent at all. If only Poppy’s monologues weren’t so detailed.

✘ In the second half, something is said. I understood its implication right away and was surprised when the characters didn’t until much later. It was pretty obvious to be even considered a plot twist.

Overall, this was a disappointment from the previous books. I decided to lower my rating to two stars because the cons outweighed the pros by far and while I was mostly subjective regarding the first two, since like I said I’m only reading them as a light fantasy + romance, I simply wasn’t impressed at all with installment. That being said, I’m still definitely going to read the sequel. I also still am excited about it because I really want to know what happens next.

Since many asked me about it, does the joining happen? (view spoiler)

Elle G. Reads I need to read these ones!

Kat (Books are Comfort Food) ELL, at least it’s available after your internship so you will be handsomely rewarded. I hope this is everything you love in a book.

So addicting if the quality isn't very good!

Thank you, Kat! The quality won't be great but I'll probably enjoy it at least :)

preoccupiedbybooks Wow, I didn't know there were ARCs for this! Enjoy!

Thank you, Fran! It wasn't on Netgally, I personally contacted the publisher. I honestly didn't think they'd send me one especially since I wasn't raving about those books like everyone else (second book rated 3 stars). I feel like I have to play nice in my review but of course I won't 😂

Sleepy Boy Oh no, :/ it seems like the last few I've seen of your reviews have fallen flat for you. :'(

To be fair I'm in the middle of a 2 star ARC unless the author pulls something amazing out of her butt in the tail end (Puns, I'll see myself out).

And I have two other arcs still to read before I move to other books 🙁 you're right, I haven't read any great books lately especially since most of what I'm reading is what I "should" be reading and not what I'm in the mood for :/

Sleepy Boy That's a very fair point. I tend to rotate genres fairly consistently. Was the same way with military history in terms of era.

Really hope rereading Jade City is a good palate cleanser Nicole! Hang in there. :)

Thank you, Jonathan! Sadly I almost never reread books so I won't be participating in the BR but I want to join the discussion (or at least read since I don't remember much of it) because I plan to read the second book before the release of the third this September.

Yun Terrific review, Nicole! What a bummer the trilogy ended on a low note, and it dragged on and on. I haven't read this series yet, but it's on my tbr. I hope to get to it one of these days! :)

6 books, holy cow!! Now I need to rethink if I want to commit, cause each book is kind of long too. Thanks for the heads up haha!

6 books *so far* too 😂 but they don’t feel so long that’s the good thing about them.

RajKSiążek I just have to know. Are Poppy and Cass together and in one place which is not some dark cage at the end? I have to know are they technically safe at the end🙈

Sara Sanford I 100% agree with this review. The lack of content towards the middle of the book was frustrating, I was aggravated.

RajKSiążek I have no idea how to answer to your comment directly, but I love spoilers! So of you don't want to spoil anyone here, can you tell on private chat?

Rowina I agree! So much happens in the beginning but towards the middle it gets quite boring! I also felt that so many things happened but not enough in line with advancing the story. I also did NOT feel the last part of the book 😅

message 40: by Nova (new)

Nova Castelle The amount of information I got from the book just honestly hurt my brain. There was so much to take in like WHAAAAA. It was like “oh new info cool” then a few chapters later “oh even more info” and it just kept on going 😂

JLA really extended it to 6 books? damn. Tho i am interested in the book thats gonna come in October about Nyktos and his consort.

Nicole Rowina wrote: "I agree! So much happens in the beginning but towards the middle it gets quite boring! I also felt that so many things happened but not enough in line with advancing the story. I also did NOT feel ..."

But I’m glad you enjoyed it overall more than I did!

What I had no idea about this Nyktos book. This really does NOT need 3 more books... at least not about poppy and cas..

The info dump is too much and too late !

Sophie Just finished and I’m so shocked , the first two had good pace and ended with a decent cliff hanger but this felt like it should have been a .5 book rather than the next installment . I felt like by the time we actually got to the main point the book ended , and not in a fun suspenseful way . Just felt unfinished and like I’m missing half a book that’s already too long , I don’t need to have every detail of a room explained and the thinking things over a hundred times but just thinking the same things but with different words! Like we get it you miss your friends but we don’t need a recap of how they died every time

Madison THANK YOU! I have been wanting to say this for two days but you summed it up perfectly. The info dump, the monologue, the overpowered crap and such shitty plot twists that mean nothing because you have no time to be invested. While SJM does have some of the problems you mentioned they're much less than what JLA has been doing. SJM info dumped in book one of Crescent city then made it awesome and actually about good plot, good writing by the end! She doesn't do it in the next three books in the series. In other series like ACOTAR and especially TOG the world building was slow, natural, the world formed in your mind without such force and headache while here it's like she crams in whatever is convenient or could be used for potential books! There's too much, this is a ridiculous amount of knowledged to be learning in the third book and there could have been much less of it. The monologues, oh the monologues. I'm sorry but when the character's monologues are long enough to be three paragraphs in one then you need an editor, especially when these show up in sex scenes. When SJM came out with ACOSF she said they cut chapter with freya because it was unnecessary and derailed the story naturally in flow. That's what every. Single. Monologue was. I felt like the monologue and questions were like us asking questions as readers. I'm not here to be me and get direct answers like this, I want to walk into a world and never leave. This desperately needed that very intelligent editor because God knows someone needs to cut the fat off this potentially good piece of meat. I'm disappointed, pissed off, and I honestly don't think I'll make it through the series. A series that gets worse over time in it's worst qualities qualities is not something you should subject yourself to. It's 2 stars for me as well. I feel like she also just tried to appease the fandom in ridiculous ways even though much of it is not what we actually wanted or needed. Yes a threesome sounds funny but I don't want that, no one does. Stop mixing Kieran and Cas sex wise! Stop mentioning her questions and stabbing as a joke! This is the source material, not a meme.

Minn19 Honestly I totally agree! Like I was super excited and I loved the first 2 books, but this one was disappointing. I felt like the thing where you want to keep reading it non stop was not there. I hope she improves the next books tho!

message 46: by Julia (new) - rated it 1 star

Julia I just finished it and also gave it a two stars. I think that this series is trying to hard to be the next big original high fantasy and I could not grasp any of the information that was given. And the dialogue sucked. There was no meaningful conversation, there was nothing that made me believe that these characters had real bonds. I’m really disappointed because I thought this was going to lead somewhere but all the questions from the second book weren’t answered at all, they were just used as plot twist for the sake of pulling one over on the reader.

Yep exactly! Barely anything happened in the middle.

My comparison to SJM was with the writing style specifically using the three dots. I noticed it in ACOSF.

Crescent City also had its share of info-dump and it was too much at first, the middle of conversations.
