Well, it was dark and gritty, that's for sure. The vampires are not nice people at all, they are unapologetic for it, too. The hero is an anti-hero and he's one of the best of the bunch. He's redeemable but it's too little, too late in general.

The heroine is just too stupid to live and I never really cared if she made it through or not. She started out falling into his arms and I didn't understand why and that only got worse, and every time she did I liked her less. At the end she kind of came into herself a bit but by then didn't really have a chance to develop her skills and the way the ending was written I suppose the next book will be her opportunity for that, perhaps primarily in the "real" world instead of the Vamp City world.

The end isn't a cliff hanger but it was a set up for a longer arc, and the book arc was satisfactorily closed although it was on a reveal that just continued an established trend about the anti-hero and confirmed my already firmly established opinion of him. I might read the next installment but I'll be reading in the hopes of seeing everyone finally get their comeuppance, not because I like anyone enough to wish them a happy ending or am rooting for them.

3 to 3.5, mostly for the macabre world building.

Yui tstl? ouch. But you gave 3stars must have some other redeeming qualities? Loved the Feral Warrior series and have high hopes for this one. Will you be writing a review?

^-^

I was just writing the brief review as you were commenting. It's dark, and there are things about it that were quite good. But there are things about it that can only be called insipid, too. I kept hoping that the reason for the insipid would be revealed and it would turn out to be a plot device and not just a plot hole. Maybe in the longer run.

Yui Thanks for the review! I'm putting it aside for now.

I don't understand how the love-interest can be a vampire if they're emotionless creatures but it's a minor concern since I havent read it yet.

I'm having a Harlequin marathon (because I only have few hours between work and house chores and bear to bookmark a book) so I can't stand TSTL heroines right now. Maybe when the Feral series is finished i'll get back to this.

The interaction between the hero and the heroine reads more like a romance novel and it doesn't make sense. She gets attacked repeatedly and is tied to a bed spread eagle and tormented, is coming to grips with the existence of vampires after having been attacked by two of them and her brother being abducted, has just learned there is an alternate reality city full of said vampires she is a prisoner in and is now considered a slave, and she's falling into the arms of her captor while still being tied to the bed in the first 35 pages. It only gets worse as he plays with her like a cat plays with its food for the rest of the book and she continues to run back to him like he's the second coming of Christ.

Yeah, she's tstl.

Yui Ouch. Palmer does seem to favor violent heroes but I've always found at least one redeeming quality on them so far. We'll see if the same for this series. At least,..I'm a firm believed in Forewarned is forearmed when it comes to the romantic angle.

People who are a fan of the tormented hero who is trying to be better than his genetics will probably resonate to this.

I'm not that forgiving and tend to hold a grudge much longer than the average romance reader.

For example, I think Bill in the Sookie Stackhouse series is a game playing, conniving, two-faced rapist; not a poor tormented soul who was just doing what he was ordered and who has done his best to redeem himself. I usually equate the women who are hard core Bill lovers with the sort you'd likely find in a battered women's shelter still holding on to the notion that "love will conquer all" right into their grave. I don't think it's romantic, I think it's stupid and it makes for poor fiction.

So, your mileage may vary.

Yui Oh Bill. I totally despise that guy even from the beginning. I find him weak and a poor excuse for a vampire or even a man. Really even with Eric being an ass for the last couple of Sookie novels I still like him better than Bill.

I'm not much a fan of tormented heroes either esp. when I have to spend pages inside their minds but I do prefer strong male leads who leads to a no backbone follower.

Well, the male lead here is an anti-hero. He's better than most of the others of his ilk but it's not saying much.
