Is my business future-proof? It’s a question many CEOs grapple with daily. Jean-Pascal Tricoire was CEO of Schneider Electric for 17 years. Shortly after his tenure began, he chose to kick-start the company’s transformation through the acquisition of one of the most disruptive firms in its sector. It turned into an uphill battle, with some investors and employees viewing the strategy as far-fetched and struggling to buy into the vision. In this frank conversation with BCG’s CEO Christoph Schweizer, Tricoire describes how he went about winning hearts and minds. At BCG, we believe that collaboration between businesses and governments is essential to drive meaningful, sustainable change for both the environment and the economy. As climate change continues to intensify—with more frequent extreme weather events, rising sea levels impacting coastal areas, and growing public health challenges—the importance of collective action has never been clearer. Working together unlocks innovative solutions and multiplies impact, creating a future where tackling climate change is not only achievable but also a shared success. The 2024 UN Climate Change Conference (COP29) kicks off in Baku, Azerbaijan, uniting leaders from both the public and private sectors in solidarity for a green world. This gathering will aim to drive solutions and foster actionable commitments, with a particular focus on unlocking the finance required to translate the global pathway into national plans based on the pledges made during COP28. COP29 is crucial in setting financial goals that drive climate action, laying the groundwork for shared climate ambitions in the years ahead. To further drive progress, we identify five topics high on our agenda this year: 1. Collaboration: Partnerships across governments, multilateral institutions, the social sector, and businesses are vital to achieving transformational change. 2. Finance: New financing structures can unlock capital to turn ambition into action. 3. Energy Transition and Decarbonization: Infrastructure transformation, methane reduction, and green procurement are foundational for scaling climate solutions. 4. Green Growth Acceleration: Expanding green businesses and fostering innovation drive sustainability and economic resilience. 5. Adaptation and Resilience: Effective adaptation needs public-private collaboration and investment. Financing upgrades in infrastructure to tackle rising sea levels and extreme weather protects vulnerable communities and ecosystems. BCG's Global Chair, Rich Lesser, recently discussed the actions that governments and corporations still need to take to address climate change on the Harvard Business School Business Climate Rising podcast. “Goal one is step up because if we all step up, that's the best thing we can do to help all of us. “Goal two is to do better on adaptation and resilience. Goal three is do a much better job on scenario planning and getting ready for a world where transition risks are much higher than people perceive they're likely to be.” He also discusses his professional commitment to these issues, BCG's Role in net zero commitments, sustainable transitions, and AI's Impact on climate resilience.
