Snow banks[1] are obstacles in New Super Mario Bros. They are deep depressions in the ground containing snow that cause the player to sink, reducing jump height. Snow banks appear only in the snow-themed level World 5-1. Mario (or Luigi) slightly sinks into the snow when he walks on a snow bank, which reduces his jump height. This makes it difficult for him to avoid oncoming snowballs or hop over approaching Goombas. There are ? Blocks and Coin Blocks above snow banks that are lower than they would be above normal ground.
The first snow bank appears near the start of the level. Above this snow bank are three ? Blocks, one of which contains a power-up. The second one appears a little further on. Here, there are two more ? Blocks, which must be used to obtain the first Star Coin of the level. Nearby is a Snow Spike that will launch snowballs toward the snow bank. The third and fourth ones are located in the middle of the level and appear together. In the third one, there is a Green Koopa Paratroopa and a Star Coin above it. To reach it, Mario or Luigi must hit the Winged ? Block that flies above the snow bank at the right moment. In the fourth one, which is a little further ahead, there are two Brick Blocks, three coins, and a Snow Spike that launches snowballs at the player. The fifth and final one is near the end. In this one, there will be a Green Koopa Paratroopa, two Goombas, and a little further on, a Snow Spike that throws snowballs toward the snow bank.
