Heavy Zeds,[1] also referred to as simply Owls,[2] are allies in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. They are large owls usually found sleeping. The second word of their name, "zed," refers to the British English pronunciation of "Z," commonly used as an onomatopoeia for snoring, while the first word supposedly refers to "heavy sleeper."

History[edit]

Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins[edit]

Heavy Zeds appear in the levels of Tree Zone in Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins. A Heavy Zed, normally asleep, wakes up when Mario approaches, then he can stand on the Heavy Zed to move to a different area. Similar owl counterparts appear in later titless, including Hoot from Super Mario 64 and the owls in the Wario Land series.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

A Heavy Zed is a supporting character in volume 7 of Super Mario-kun. It squishes a Battle Beetle after Mario accidentally hits it off of the tree.[3] Heavy Zed takes Mario and Carrot over to Big Bird's nest and later delivers a Fire Flower to assist them. The Heavy Zed later finds the Golden Coin, after Mario defeats the Big Bird but falls back asleep.

In volume 10, Luigi arrives on Heavy Zed, with the inhabitants of Mario Land freed from Wario's hypnosis, and joins the audience to watch Mario's final battle.[4]
