A Bero[1] (generically referred to by Nintendo Power as spook heads[2]) is an enemy in Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins. They are based on the chōchin-obake, a paper lantern in Japanese mythology brought to life on its one hundredth "birthday."

History[edit]

Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins[edit]

In Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins, Bero are invincible obstacles and appear only in the Pumpkin Zone's Graveyard Course, where they attack by pointing their tongue down. Bero can be used as platforms.

Super Mario Kodansha manga[edit]

In the Super Mario Kodansha manga, Bero appear in the last chapter of Super Mario Land 2 - 6-tsu no Kinka 1, haunting the Graveyard Course. They attempt to scare Mario and Princess Peach, but they claim that, since they are from the quite different Western culture (with Peach being blonde like Americans and Mario having an Italian name), they cannot comprehend the Japanese ghosts and be scared of them, saddening the Bero. Later they attempt to use this trick (by swapping the culture) against the Ghost Goombas, but they are not fooled.

In Super Mario Land 2 - 6-tsu no Kinka 3, a Bero can be seen as one of the several enemies that Mario and Luigi quickly pass by inside Wario's Castle.

Super Mario-kun[edit]

A Bero in Super Mario-kun

A Bero appears in chapter 9 of volume 8 of Super Mario-kun. It is a messanger sent by the Witch to Wario, as a living bento full of food she prepared, but the Bero ends up vomiting the food out of its mouth and the frying Karakara also hops out of his mouth alive, which repulses Wario. This sets the stage for the final punchline when Mario sends the Witch, transformed into steamed fish, to Wario at the end of the chapter.

A Bero can be spotted in chapter 7 of volume 10, when Luigi brings all of the freed Mario Land's creatures to witness the final battle.

Lantern spirits appear only in the Yōkai Monastery Course. If you touch its long tongue, you will be damaged. It cannot be defeated, but it will not move on its own, so it is safe as long as you do not touch it.

Names in other languages[edit]

Unlike most mainline Super Mario titles, Super Mario Land 2 - 6 Golden Coins did not receive officially localized enemy indexes at the time of its release on the Game Boy and not all enemies are listed in its instruction booklets. Consequentially, most available non-Japanese names come from localizations of the Super Mario Bros. Encyclopedia.
