1. Scope
This MES specifies the sizes and formats of drawings used for automotive parts.
Remarks 1. The sizes and formats of Mazda-unique drawings are specified in the body
of this MES.
2. The simplified title blocks for A4 and A3-size Mazda unique drawings are
specified in Annex 1 of this MES.
3. The drawing formats for Ford/Mazda joint programs are specified in the
Ford/Mazda Integrated Drafting Standards. The standards are applied to
joint programs from 2003 C-Car. The drawing formats of Ford/Mazda
joint program for New I4 engine are specified in Annex 2 of this MES.
4. The sizes and formats of the drawings prepared by suppliers and submitted
to Mazda are specified in MES BA 302.

2. Definitions
The definitions of terms used in this MES shall be in accordance with JIS Z 8114 and the
following:
(1) Simplified drawing A drawing that illustrates only the partially-changed portion,
when the drawing for the single stamping part or the assembly part expressed in an
existing drawing is needed to be partially-changed and updated. It also indicates that the
other portions shall follow the existing drawing.
(2) Base drawing An existing drawing on which a simplified drawing is based.
(3) Multi-use drawing/Simplified multi-use drawing The definitions of a multi-use
drawing/simplified multi-use drawing shall be in accordance with MES BA 203.
(4) Frame A long size (A0L) drawing may not be filmed in one frame and shall be done
in 2 or 3 frames. The frame refers to each portion to be filmed.
(5) Matching line Lines that are used to facilitate positioning in duplicating segmented
drawings from micro films of a long size drawing, and matching them so as to obtain its
original condition.
(6) Grid line Lines that indicate cubic lattice used to clarify the positional relation with
a vehicle body in the case where single stamping part or assembly parts are indicated on a
drawing.

3. Size of Drawing
(1) The size of a drawing shall be large enough to show clear figures taking into consideration
the size of an object and the complexity of its figure.

(2) The size of a drawing shall conform to A0 to A4 (standard size) specified in JIS P 0138.
Only A0 may be extended in the longitudinal direction.
The drawing dimensions of A0L (long size) shall conform to Table 1.
Remark In the case of A0L drawing, try to reduce the size to A0 by combining sheets
such as A0 and A1. A0L may be used only if it is impossible to reduce the
size to A0.
(3) The regular position of a drawing shall be in its longitudinal direction located horizontally.
The regular position for A4 drawing, however, shall be in its longitudinal direction located
vertically.

4. Border and Borderline for Drawing

4.1 Border size “c”, “d”, and “e” in Table 1 show the border sizes. Fig. 1 shows the
positions of “c”, “d”, and “e”.

4.2 Borderline The borderlines used for a drawing shall be continuous lines of 0.5 mm
or more in thickness.

5. Title Block
5.1 Standard size drawing
5.1.1 Format of title block The format of the title block is as shown in Attached Fig. 1.
The simplified title blocks in A4 & A3 size drawings are as shown in Annex 1.
5.1.2 Entering position of title block The entering position of the title block is as
shown in Fig. 2.

5.1.3 Title block entering procedure The formats of letters to be entered shall conform
to MES BA 013.
(1) Part number or drawing number block
A part number or drawing number shall be entered in the part number or drawing number
block as shown in Fig. 3.

Remarks 1. The coding procedures of the part number shall conform to MES BE 710,
MES BE 750 and MES BE 752.
2. In the case of a single drawing, the indicated revision shall always be the
latest, and all the old ones shall be eliminated.
3. To attain better legibility of numbers, “ (hyphens)” or blanks may be
placed in between the numbers in the part number which indicate type,
function and revision, respectively, as delimiters.
4. The entering procedures for the multi-use drawing and simplified multi-use
drawing shall conform to MES BA 203.

(2) Part name block A part name shall be entered in part name block as shown in Fig. 4.

Remarks 1. The details of names shall conform to MES BE 760 and Part Name Search
in the website of the CAD Dept.
2. The entering procedure of part names in the multi-use drawing/simplified
multi-use drawing shall conform to MES BA 203.
3. The upper half shall be entered in “katakana” (a type of Japanese
characters). Symbols such as A, B and 1, 2, shall be entered in
alphanumeric code.
4. The lower half shall be entered in alphanumeric code, including centered
dot, hyphen, comma, and blank. The number of letters shall be within 19.

(3) Base drawing number block A base drawing number shall be entered in the base
drawing number block as shown in Fig. 5, in the case where the drawing is developed in a
simplified form. As an exception, it may be used in the case where an associated
supplier enters its own part number.

(4) Multi-use drawing/Simplified multi-use drawing block The symbols of a

multi-use drawing or simplified multi-use drawing (D, E, S, M, P) shall be entered as
shown in Fig. 6, in the case where the drawing is developed in a multi-use or simplified
multi-use form. The details of symbol meanings and entering procedure are described in
MES BA 203.

(5) Subscript block Subscripts (Zxx, Yxx, Txx, Mxx, Pxx) shall be entered in the
subscript block as shown in Fig. 7. The details of symbol meanings and entering
procedure are described in MES BE 750 and MES BE 752. In the case of multi-use
drawing/simplified multi-use drawing, do not fill in this block.

(6) Frame number block 1/1 shall be entered in the frame number block of a standard
size drawing. The details of entering procedure for the long size drawing shall conform
to section 5.2.

(7) Sheet number block 1/1 shall be entered in the sheet number block of a single-sheet
drawing. In the case of multiple-sheet drawing, the details of entering procedure shall
conform to section 5.3.

(8) Drawing sheet size block The sheet size of a developed drawing shall be entered in
the drawing sheet size block as shown in Fig. 10.

(9) Specification drawing block The specification drawing block shall be filled in
according to MES BA 302. “–“ shall be entered in the case of a production drawing. A
symbol shall be entered as shown in Fig. 11.

(10) Color part block A symbol “Y” shall be entered in the color part block as shown

(11) Quality rank block

(a) A quality rank indicated on a drawing, in 3D data, or in the Automobile Parts
Standard shall be entered as shown in Fig. 13. The details of the entering procedure
shall conform to MES BD 103.
(b) The details of the definition of the quality rank is described in MES K01 002.

(13) Applicable standard block The standard number of the Automobile Parts
Standard referred to the drawing shall be entered in the applicable standard block as
shown in Fig. 15. The block shall be left blank or “–“ shall be entered if there is no
reference to the Automobile Parts Standard.

(14) Coordination block A drawing origination date (year/month/day) shall be entered

in the coordination block as shown in Fig. 16. The year shall be indicated with the
lower 2 digits of the calendar year.

(20) Revision block

(a) How to use a revision block The revision block shall be filled in from the
bottom ladder successively, as shown in Fig. 22. In the case where a change is
made to the drawing with all ladders filled, all contents shall be deleted, the latest
revision on the top ladder shall be entered in the very bottom ladder, and current
revision shall be entered in the second bottom ladder. The rest shall be entered
successively. In the case where the drawing needs some coordination, similarly, the
latest revision on the top ladder shall be entered in the very bottom ladder, and
“Coordination” shall be entered in the second bottom ladder. The rest shall be
entered successively.

(b) Revision number block (REV No.) Numbers from 0 to 999 shall be entered in
the order of revisions. In the case where 3 digits are entered, write them clearly so
that they can be read even when the drawing is photocopied in any reduced size.
(c) Engineering Change Notice number block (ECN NO.) An ECN number shall
be entered in the ECN number block of a single drawing as shown in Fig. 23. The
numbering of ECN shall conform to the website of the CAD Dept. In the case of a
multi-use drawing/simplified multi-use drawing, conform to MES BA 203.

(d) Date (year/month/date) block (DATE) The date on the ECN shall be entered in
the date block as shown in Fig. 23. The lower 2 digits of the calendar year shall be
assigned as “year”.
(e) Revision symbol block (REV SYM) The subscript of the prototype, subscript of
the parts on List of Instructing Fabrication Parts based on MP architecture, or suffix
after development completion shall be entered in the revision symbol block as shown
in Fig. 23. It shall not be entered in a multi-use drawing/simplified multi-use
drawing.

(f) Note block (NOTE) The outline of Engineering Change, selected from Table 3
below, shall be entered in the note block as shown in Fig. 23. If the changed contents
do not apply to Table 3, the details of the change shall be entered in the block.
Entering may be done in either way; in English, or in both Japanese and English. In
the case of a multi-use drawing/simplified multi-use drawing, conform to
MES BA 203.

(d) Sheet number block “1/1” shall be entered in the sheet number block in the case
of a single-sheet drawing.
5.3 Multiple-sheet drawing
5.3.1 Format of title block
(1) The format of the main title block shall conform to Attached Fig. 1.
(2) The format of the sub title block shall conform to Fig. 24.
5.3.2 Entering position of title block The entering positions of the main title block and
sub title block shall conform to Attached Figs. 2 and 3.
5.3.3 Entering procedure of title block
(1) Entering procedure of main title block Conform to the following except for
releases by sheets. In the case of releases by sheets, conform to MES BA 402.
(a) In all the main title blocks for respective sheets, the same contents shall be entered in
accordance with section 5.1.3. The entering procedure for the simplified title block of
Annex 1 and the following blocks are different from that for the main title block:
1) Signature block The names of a person in charge of drafting preparation and
persons in charge of check and approval shall be entered.
2) Coordination date block A start date of drafting preparation shall be entered.
3) Frame block A frame number shall be entered for each sheet as shown in
Fig. 29.
4) Sheet block A sheet number shall be entered for each sheet as shown in Fig. 29.
5) Size block Size of the drawing sheet shall be entered in each sheet.
6) Quality rank block Quality rank symbols shall be entered in the first sheet of the
drawing as instructed in section 5.1.3 (11). The second and subsequent sheets shall
not contain this information.
(b) Even if the sheet has no relation with ECN, revision shall be entered in the revision
block in the same way as an ECN-related sheet.

(2) Entering procedure of sub title block The sub title block shall be filled out in the
case of a long size drawing. The entering procedure for the sub title block shall conform
to section 5.2.3 (2).

7. Design Engineer Note Block

7.1 Entering position The entering position of the design engineer note block shall
conform to Fig. 32.

7.2 Entering procedure Drawing control requirements such as applicable carlines,

obsolete part numbers, and origin of drawing development shall be entered in the design
engineer note block. This block may be used for information conveyance to the downstream
process only for prototypes.

8. Block of Drawing/Part Number for Searching

8.1 Entering procedure For any drawing larger than or equal to A0 size, a block of
drawing/part number for searching may be entered. The entering position is at the back of
right corner outside the border. The entering position is shown in Fig. 33.

8.2 Entering procedure Drawing/part number shall be entered. Entry of a suffix is

not required at this time.

9. Check Block for Indication Items

(1) Format The format of the check block such as TREATMENT and Specification
Drawing shall conform to Fig. 34.

(2) Entering procedure The stamped item check block shall be filled out in order to
check for items incorrect or missing on the drawing. Circle applicable items (○) and
cross out the others ( / ) as shown in Fig. 34.

13. Metric Reference Scale

13.1 Display of metric reference scale A scale shall be drawn on the drawing, as a rule.
It shall be indicated at micro-filming.

14. Drawing Zone

14.1 Display of drawing zones The drawing zones may be shown on the drawing for
the convenience of indicating the position of specific areas, provided that it is only applied to
drawings larger than or equal to A0 which have no grid lines (TL, BL, WL).
14.2 Division of drawing zones To indicate drawing zones, long and short sides of the
drawing shall be divided at intervals of 50 mm respectively.
14.3 Position and size of zoning line The zoning lines which indicate zones shall be
straight lines of 0.5 mm in thickness. They, touching borderlines of the drawing, shall be
drawn on the outside.
14.4 Zoning symbol The zones placed on borderlines of the drawing shall be marked
with Arabic numbers 1. 2. 3…. successively from upper-left corner along the transverse side
of the drawing in regular location, as well as capital alphabet letters A, B, C…. successively
along longitudinal side. The opposite sides shall be marked with the same zoning symbols
(Fig. 43). The rectangular zone formed by these zoning lines is called B-2, for instance,
depending on the combination of the zoning symbols.

14.5 Position of zoning symbols The symbols given to zones shall be entered outside,
near the borderline 5 mm or more distant from the edge of the paper. (Fig. 43)

15. Grid Line

In order to clarify the positional relation with vehicles, cubic lattice lines of 100 mm or
50 mm shall be drawn. They shall be called TL, BL and WL respectively, and collectively
named grid lines. The coordinates fixed on a vehicle body shows the relation between grid
lines and the vehicle body. Therefore, the relative relation between grid lines and ground
line varies with spring constant of suspensions, or load capacity (mass).
15.1 Meanings of TL, BL and WL
(1) TL (Transverse Line) A line that indicates a positional relation between the front
and rear. The numeral increases as it goes behind, 0 TL, 1 TL...TL. The numerals
before 0 TL shall be indicated with a minus mark (–).
(2) BL (Buttock Line) A line that indicates a positional relation between the right and
left, with its center of the vehicle as 0 BL. The numeral increases as it goes outwards.
To distinguish the right and left, in a seated condition on a driver’s seat, it shall be called
1 BL, 2 BL, 3 BL for right-hand side, and shall be called –1 BL, –2 BL, –3 BL, with a
minus mark (–) for the left-hand side.
(3) WL (Water line) A line that indicates a vertical positional relation. The numeral
increases as it goes higher, 0 WL, 1 WL, …WL. The numerals under 0 WL shall be
indicated with a minus mark (–).

15.2 How to define TL, BL and WL reference (A standard case is shown in Fig. 44.)
TL: The center of front wheel at standard performance shall be regarded as 10 TL.
BL: The center of the vehicle shall be regarded as 0 BL.
WL: The level of the front wheel center at standard performance shall be regarded as
1 WL.

Annex 1 Simplified Title Block on A4 & A3 Mazda-Unique Drawings

1. Scope
This standard shall specify simplified title blocks on Mazda-unique drawings of A4 and A3
sizes.

2. Basic Conditions for Drawing with Simplified Title Block

The basic conditions for developing the drawing with simplified title block shall be as
follows:
(1) The drawing shall be of multiple sheets.
(2) The first sheet of the multiple-sheet drawing shall be capable of satisfying the format such
as the title block specified in the body of this MES. In the case of releases by sheet, the
first and second sheets shall be capable of satisfying the format such as the title block
specified in the body of this MES.
