Several Operators have recently expressed concern regarding the compatibility of clay and lithium-
based greases used on the aircraft. It is recommended that the following cautions be exercised:
" Greases should not be mixed (i.e., clay and lithium-based greases are not compatible).
" Industry standards, when applying grease, require that surfaces be clean and free of old grease
and contaminates before applying the new grease. In cases where sealed units or assemblies
utilize grease fittings, the removal of old grease may be difficult. Operators should ensure that the
grease is applied until new clean grease is seen extruding from the unit being serviced. This is
particularly important when switching from one grease type to another.
This issue is currently under investigation. A Service Letter will be issued outlining grease types,
application, procedures, and compatibility.
ISAR Item No. 2001-02-2124 contributed by François Tremblay, Technical Help Desk
Air density high elevation airfields has caused ARINC COOL caution messages to illuminate while
the aircraft was on the ground
The root cause of this occurrence was identified as the flow metering plate (p/n 601R96612-7) that
was permitting too much air to exit the cooling circuit.
A redesign will be introduced on production aircraft S/N 7570. A fix (RNIEO 601 on drawing
601R96610) is available for Operators with older aircraft.

ISAR Item No. 2001-02-2740 contributed by Dario Gingras, Technical Help Desk
The CRJ Technical Help Desk’s Action Centre is occasionally contacted by Operators to help in
troubleshooting a repetitive horizontal stabilizer trim system malfunction.
During the troubleshooting process, as per Fault Isolation Manual 27-40-00, the THD often finds that
the original problem has been rectified, but a new problem is induced by the Operator’s Maintenance
staff while troubleshooting. In some instances, the problem has been identified with the HSTCU
being improperly installed in its mounting tray following a replacement.
The HSTCU must be pushed firmly into its mounting tray to compress the spring-loaded rear hold-
down pin installed on the tray (see illustration). The self-locking front hold-down must not be used
to push the unit in; its purpose is only to secure the HSTCU when it is fully engaged in the tray (rear
electrical connector).
Note: This procedure applies to all types of mounting trays with the self-locking front hold-down
(e.g., DCUs, TCAS, junction boxes, etc.).

ISAR Item No. 2001-02-5211 contributed by Serge Taillefer, Technical Help Desk
In the event of a main door support wheel being missing, or to support the door for aircraft
movement, Operators would like to use the door support cable (GSE ref. #1010-04). Unfortunately,
there are no installation or removal procedures for the main door support cables in the Configuration
Deviation List (52-11) found in the Airplane Flight Manual (AFM)
Bombardier has raised a Manual Change Request for Technical Publications to include
installation/removal procedures in the AFM Configuration Deviation List.
Until this change is incorporated in the AFM, the following procedures may be considered by
Operators in the event of a main door support wheel being missing.
# INSTALL LOCKING CLIP AFTER FINAL CABLE LENGTH ADJUSTMENT IS PERFORMED WITH DOOR
DOWN AND CABLES IN PLACE.

Information Exchange
Significant Event Reporting
contributed by Mike Dornenburg & Jason Schick, Technical Help Desk Managers
Operators sometimes experience significant in-flight events of which Bombardier is unaware, unless
assistance is requested through the Technical Help Desk (THD).
Even when no immediate assistance is required by an Operator concerning a particular significant
event, Bombardier would very much appreciate being informed.
It should be emphasized that the significant events which Bombardier is interested in studying are
those of a definite technical nature.
Operators are encouraged to submit Significant Event Reports (SER) to their assigned Field Service
Representatives or to the THD. The information gathered from SERs is maintained in a separate
database, which is highly visible to Bombardier senior management. The THD uses this significant
event data to monitor trends with a view to addressing technical issues early, before potential
problems impact the dispatch reliability of the entire fleet.
In addition to the Operator benefits to be achieved through significant event reporting, Bombardier
is obliged by a regulatory requirement to report certain types of events to Transport Canada. It is
therefore important that Operators submit complete and accurate reports, including root cause part
and serial numbers.

The purpose of this ISAR article is to solicit input with respect to errors, omissions or changes to
information in Bombardier’s Supplier Information Manual. The contents of this manual are as
up-to-date as the date created, but naturally subject to continuous change.
In an effort to assist Bombardier in maintaining the currency of the Supplier Information Manual, it
would be appreciated if recipients of the manual would communicate changes to the Supplier

CRJ ISAR 2001-02
Revision 22 of the CRJ 100/200 Aircraft Maintenance Manual is now complete. The manual will be
released in the field by March 23, 2001. This revision is a complete re-issue of the AMM,
following conversion to a new authoring system based on the ATA 2100 digital interchange
standard.
Revision 22 reflects many changes to the manual content, including the following:
✈ Incorporation of the EICAS 2000 avionics upgrades.
✈ Incorporation of the Phase IV door data.
✈ Incorporation of other major modifications on the aircraft that were introduced in the year 2000.
✈ Coverage of production aircraft up to S/N 7536.
Throughout the past year, many of the changes above were covered by Temporary Revisions. As
this is a complete re-issue of the manual, all TRs released prior to the Revision 22 publication date
(February 2, 2001) are superseded and their content incorporated into this revision. The “List of
Effective Temporary Revisions” that accompanies the AMM indicates which TRs stay in effect.
Recipients of electronic versions of the AMM will receive Revision 22 on CD-ROM. However,
because of the transition to a new browser/viewer technology, the CD will not use the Worldview
product. As an interim measure, the data is presented in the .pdf file format. This is a very flexible
format that can be read by using Adobe Acrobat. Most personal computers have this software
installed. If not installed on the PC, the Adobe software is available for free download on
http://www.adobe.com/.
Revision 22 of the AMM will also be released in a web-enabled format in May 2001. This format
will become the standard for digital delivery to Regional Aircraft fleets. The initial release, available
on Digital Virtual Disc (DVD), and from a test web site, will be for evaluation and familiarization
only. At Revision 23 of the AMM, the web-enabled manuals, delivered on DVD, will become an
official source of maintenance information.
Additional details concerning the release of digital publications will be communicated to Operators
in a timely manner.
Comments and inquiries should be directed to the assigned Bombardier Aerospace Regional
Aircraft Field Service Representative or to the Technical Help Desk in Montreal (telephone:
1-514-855-8000; fax: 1-514-855-8501; e-mail: thd@notes.canadair.ca).

CRJ ISAR 2001-02
The eighth meeting of the Maintenance Cost Working Group was held in Scottsdale, Arizona on
February 6th and 7th, 2001. Ten Operators were represented, accounting for 75% of the fleet, and
nine Vendors supported the meeting.
Presentations
B/E Aerospace introduced Wencor. Wencor will be the Parts Stocking Distributor for B/E
Aerospace parts. B/E will produce a list of recommended preventative maintenance items to inspect,
assisting the Operator in reducing seat costs. There were discussions on the continuing seatback
failure problem. It was decided to further discuss the seatback issue at the next MCWG meeting
after all data had been reviewed.
Shorts gave an update on the various issues in work on the thrust reverser and engine cowls. The
new stang fairing was described, and the improved blocker door bushing (now available),
eliminating the requirement to be line-reamed.
Maintenance Cost Data presented data on brake and wheel costs. This was followed by an Aircraft
Braking Systems presentation on maintenance of the CRJ brake. Various issues were discussed,
including the problem of leaking brakes caused by the latest seal compounds.
Aerofit Products gave a hands-on presentation of the memory-based material repair for hydraulic
tubes (better known as Cryofit). The ease and speed of this repair was fully demonstrated.
Maintenance Cost Data discussed the “soft time” option of the IDG. Bombardier will continue to
review the relationship between soft time removal and cost of repair. Hamilton Sundstrand then
gave a presentation on the technical issues, such as the new redesigned idler gear shaft assembly.
The Operators are hopeful that this redesigned idler gear shaft assembly will reduce their cost per
hour.
In-Service Engineering gave an update on the nine ISE issues that are on the MCWG action item list
but are being worked by ISE.
Tom Najman presented the latest data on the APU, showing a continuing improvement as more -3
APUs are brought on-line.
Honeywell gave a presentation on the progress of APU improvements. This was followed by a
lengthy discussion on problems with glycol ingestion. As improvement to the APU has continued,
members of the MCWG unanimously recommended that the APU issue be removed from the “Top
25” list.
Collins addressed the open action items that are still ongoing. These concerned improving the
support and reliability of the Radar Transmitter/Receiver Antenna (RTA).
