THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

INTRODUCTION

Nowadays, many young people are sleeping late at night and that is not on the right time.
Many of people today are having become habits the sleeping late, whether they are young or old.

They have a lot of school activities that they cannot finish in school so that they bring it
at home such as assignments, projects and other school related works. However, there are still a
lot of hindrances to do these school activities including playing mobile games, chatting and
hanging out with their friends and love ones.

According to Wikipedia sleep is a naturally occurring, repeating state of mind and body
marked by altered comparatively populated sensory activity, consciousness, almost complete
habitation of voluntary muscles and decreased environmental interactions. The majority of the
body's systems are in an anabolic condition when it sleep. Supporting the recovery of the
neurological, skeletal, muscular, and immunological systems.

Lack of sleep is defined as participating in fewer than the term "eight hours of sleep"
refers to a general state brought on by insufficient sleep, either in terms of number or quality.
Include both intentional and unintentional insomnia. The human body needs sleep just as much
as it needs food and drink, but almost of the human being sleep too little. Sleep disturbances,
insufficient sleep, or poor quality of sleep wake cycle has implications for how function in the
daytime, causing sleepiness, dizziness and fatigue.

But despite of that sleep deprivation also has negative impact in their health and
performance whether in school. And it increased risk of hypertension, diabetes, obesity,
depression, heart attack, and stroke and it has negative impact in their emotions increases in
negative moods (anger, frustration, irritability, sadness) and decreases in positive moods. And
sleeplessness is often a symptom of mood disorders, such as depression and anxiety. RM Abrams
(2018) said that when insufficient sleep results in diminished performance, insufficient
attentiveness, and a decline in health, this is known as sleep deprivation. Lack of sleep is really
common.
Anuja Bandyopadhyay (2019) He said that insufficient sleep causes a person to
experience sleep deprivation. The amount of sleep that each person needs to feel rejuvenated and
perform at their best varies depending on their age. It is critical to get adequate sleep each night.
Additionally, some experts think that sleep allows the body to mend itself, meaning that skipping
sleep might be detrimental to one's health. Christopher Seton (2021) said that Today's teenagers
get less sleep than their predecessors did. People’s constant connectivity in the digital world,
which is fueled by shifting social demands for immediacy as a form of intimacy, is primarily the
result of technology. Teenagers will have to deal with later bedtimes, less overall sleep, and
some weekend sleep catch-up. be used to connect, Wei-Lin Chen, Jen-Hao Chen (2019) says that
sleep deprivation can have substantial consequences for college learning and achievement.

It was discovered that sleep deprivation in a student's senior year had a greater impact on
their college graduation than sleep deprivation in their freshman year. Results indicate that
chronic sleep deprivation has consequences that go beyond short-term. It also affects the
likelihood of completing a college degree.

Bruno Perotta, Fernanda M Arantes-Costa, Sylvia C. Enns, Ernesto A Figueiro-Filho,

Helena Paro, Itamar S Santos, Geraldo Lorenzi-Filho, Milton A Martins, Patricia Z Tempski
(2021) says that It has been previously shown that a high percentage of medical students have
sleep problems that interfere with academic performance and mental health. To study the impact
of sleep quality, daytime somnolence, and sleep deprivation on medical students, we analyzed
data from a multicenter study with medical students. Yusuf Patrick (2018) said that University
students often experience sleep deprivation, which has been linked to both physical dysfunction
and subpar academic performance. Because the areas examined in current literature are narrowly
focused, this study looked into how a sleepless night affected students' physical and cognitive
abilities. Rimsha Luqma (2020) She determine the factors associated with sleep deprivation and
the impact on academic performance of students living in a hostel setting. Fabien Sauvet,
Pierrick J Arnal, Pierre-Emmanuel Tardo-Dino, Catherine Drogou, Pascal Van Beers, Mégane
Erblang, Mathias Guillard, Arnaud Rabat, Alexandra Malgoyre, Cyprian Bourrilhon, Damien
Léger, Danielle Gomez-Mérino, Mounir Chennaoui (2020) According to them, exercise training
has been demonstrated to mitigate the harmful effects of sleep deprivation and enhance memory
and learning. Additionally, exercise protects against sleep deprivation. Aoi Mamiya, Ikuhiro
Morii, Kazushige Goto (2021) they examined how exercise performance the next morning was
Affected by partial sleep deprivation (PSD) following an exercise session. Datilo M
(2020) he said that sleep affects hormone output, it is thought to be crucial for muscle
rehabilitation. Also, Nowadays, many young people often sleeping late because this is where
they find their satisfaction, and this is where they spend their time to fill their freedom or maybe
they have a problem, and they think a lot of things about themselves and their family Tadele
Lankrew Ayalew, Belete Gelaw Wale, Kirubel Eshetu Haile (2022) says that Lack of sleep is
known as sleep deprivation, and it is directly linked to everyday dysfunction as well as an
increased risk of diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular disease, cognitive decline, and car and job
accidents.

CHAPTER 2

METHODS

This chapter deals with research method used, instrument of the study, participants
involved, data collection procedures, ethical consideration and statistical treatment of data
gathered.

Research Design

The researcher will utilize the quantitative method, specifically, the descriptive/Survey
design is applicable for this study. It seeks to describe the current status of an identified variable.
This design aims to provide systematic information about a phenomenon. Descriptive research
aims to accurately and systematically describe population, situation, or phenomenon. It can
answer what, where, when and how questions, but not why questions (McCombes 2020). The
goal of descriptive research is to describe phenomenon and its characteristics. This research is
more concerned with what rather than how or why something has happened.

Respondents

In order to explore the the impact of sleep deprivation in academic performances of

Consuelo High School students during face-to-face classes, the research will be conducted at
Consuelo High School, Consuelo, Macabebe, Pampanga during the second quarter of S.Y 2023-
2024. There is one group of respondents: 150 students. The researcher will use the random
sampling method

Instruments

In this study, the researcher will employ two different kinds of instruments. These
instruments include:1) for students participants for addressing the Impact of sleep deprivation,
However, the items for the questionnaire for parents are translated in Filipino so that the students
may fully understand the meaning of each item. The researcher will have the questionnaires
validated bt atleast three experts in the field: 1) one statistician; 2) one language expert; 3) one
research expert.

Data Collection

For data collection, the researcher will write a formal letter address to the school head to
secure a permission in the conduct of his study. After the formal letter are produce and
distributed, the researcher will have the survey questionnaires validated by at least three experts
in the field: 1) one statistician: 2) one language expert; 3) one research expert.
Ethical Consideration

Ethical and moral issues arise in the entire process of data gathering and interview
investigation, and therefore it is crucial to take ethical concerns into consideration from the very
start of a research and up to the final report (Kvale, 2018). The researcher ensures that the
privacy of the respondents is well secured. The researcher respect the rights, values and decisions
of the respondents. Informed consent will be secured from the respondents. The respondents will
be kept anonymous. Results of the data will be treated with full objectivity and confidentiality.

Statistical Treatment of data

Simple and basic frequency counts and percentages will be employed in this research.

Siaw Cheok Liew (2021) Sleep deprivation, a consequence of multiple health problems
or a cause of many major health risks, is a significant public health concern in this era. In the
recent years, numerous reports have been added to the literature to provide explanation and to
answer previously unanswered questions on this important topic but comprehensive updates and
reviews in this aspect remain scarce. 135 publications that examined the relationship between
sleep deprivation and health risks—including those related to the heart, lungs, nervous system,
gastrointestinal tract, immunology, dermatology, endocrine system, and reproductive health—
were found in the current study. Our goal in writing this review was to shed light on the
connection between illness development and sleep deprivation.
